THE NOVENA of GRACE Prayer to Saint Francis Xavier THE NOVENA OF GRACE Prayer to Saint Francis Xavier Preparatory Prayers V: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. O Jesus, answer our petitions as we kneel before Thee. R: O Heart of Jesus, hear and grant our prayers. V: Pray for us, Saint Francis Xavier, R: that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. V: Let us pray: Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful. Enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy spirit and they shall be created, R: and Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. V: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, R: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. All: Most lovable and loving Saint Francis Xavier, in union with you I adore the Divine Majesty. I rejoice on account of the marvelous gifts that God bestowed on you and I thank God for the special graces He gave you during your life and for the great glory that came to you after your death. I implore you to obtain for me, through your powerful intercession, the greatest of all blessings--that of living and dying in the state of grace. I also ask you to secure for me the special favor I ask in this novena. (Here you may mention the grace, spiritual or temporal, that you wish to obtain.) In asking this favor, I am fully resigned to the Divine Will. I pray and desire only to obtain that which is most conducive to the greater glory of God and the greater good of my soul.     Praying with Saint Francis Xavier The Novena of Grace Praying with St Francis Xavier The Novena of Grace The Church has always rejoiced in the “great cloud of witnesses”1 who are the saints. These men and women, over the generations and in so many places, have shown what it is to live the Christian life, sometimes to the point of surrendering their own lives in martyrdom. Their earthly lives may have ended but their prayers continue in heaven. The Church has long believed that the saints intercede on our behalf, asking God for the graces and blessings which we forget to ask for or for which we find no time to pray: “Their intercession is their most exalted service to God’s plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world.”2 Devotion to Francisco Xavier has always been immensely popular as he fires the imagination with his heroic travels to distant peoples and lands across the globe. This novena is nine days of prayer, in the company of St Francis Xavier, through the letters he wrote. As a Jesuit, Francisco underwent and then, in turn, led others through the Spiritual Exercises of his great friend St Ignatius Loyola. His writings reflect the spiritual insights and preoccupations of the Spiritual Exercises. We pray to know ourselves better, to discern the will of God for each of us in the daily unfolding of our lives, to hear and generously answer Christ’s call to follow him, whatever the cost, and to understand that everything is unmerited gift from God, poured out lavishly upon us “as rays from the sun or waters from the spring.”3 The present form of the Novena was begun in the seventeenth century by Fr Marcello Mastrilli SJ (1603-37).

FRANCIS XAVIER DAY #1 | Tuesday, March 12 It is fitting that we begin this Novena on March 12th, the anniversary of the canonizations of Saints Francis Xavier and Ignatius of Loyola. Tradition says that the Novena began when Francis Xavier appeared to a priest in a healing vision and promised that all who would ask his intercession with God for nine days would experience profound grace. Today we carry on that tradition, continuing to pray for nine days, asking for God’s grace through the intercession of Francis. The theme of this year’s Novena is “God Walking with Us,” as we remember that in this journey of life, God draws near to us in love, and binds us together with one another in friendship on the way. Each day of this Novena we will learn more about the story of Francis Xavier, an ancestor in faith and a friend in our journey over these nine days of prayer, and throughout our lives. Through the intercession of Francis Xavier, may God’s blessing pour out abundantly into our lives and our world. 475 years ago, Francis Xavier walked the paths and roads of Asia ringing a bell. Francis rang the bell to call people together for learning, prayer, healing, and conversion. So too during this Novena of Grace, we will be called together with a bell, because we also gather for prayer, for healing and for conversion.
