SOCIO-ROOTS Fund The Mitsubishi Electric SOCIO-ROOTS Fund was established in 1992 as a gift program in which the Company matches any donation made by an employee, thus doubling the goodwill of the gift. More than 1,000 employees participate in the Fund each year. As of March 2011, the Fund had provided a total of approximately ¥585 million to some 1,400 various social welfare facilities and programs. In recent years, we have extended the scope of our donations to include social welfare activities related to environmental preservation and disaster relief. In fiscal 2008, we made contributions to the Children's Forest Program in Malaysia organized by OISCA (an international NGO engaged in agricultural development and environmental protection activities, mainly in Asia and the Pacific region) and participated in local tree-planting activities under a framework that brings together the Fund and our corporate achievement award system.

  • Effect of Consonance Between Features and Voice Impression On
Interdisciplinary Information Sciences Vol. 18, No. 2 (2012) 83–85 #Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University ISSN 1340-9050 print/1347-6157 online DOI 10.4036/iis.2012.83 Effect of Consonance between Features and Voice Impression on the McGurk Effect Shuichi SAKAMOTOÃ, Hiroshi MISHIMA, and Yoˆiti SUZUKI Research Institute of Electrical Communication and Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University, Sendai 980-8577, Japan Received June 13, 2012; final version accepted August 31, 2012 The McGurk effect is one of the typical phenomena caused by human multi-modal information processing between auditory and visual speech perception. In this paper, we investigated the relation between the degree of the McGurk effect and the perceived impression by speech sounds and moving images of the talker’s face. As stimuli, uttered speech sounds were combined with moving images of a different talker’s face. These stimuli were presented to observers, who were asked to respond to what the talker was saying. At the same time, they were asked to report their subjective impressions of these stimuli. Matching between the voice and moving image was used as the index of the judgment. Results showed that matching between a voice and a talker’s facial movements affected the degree of the McGurk effect, suggesting that audio–visual kansei information affects phoneme perception. KEYWORDS: McGurk effect, audio–visual speech perception, multi-modal processing, lip-reading 1. Introduction Many researchers have pointed out that visual information strongly affects speech understanding [1, 2]. Using recent broadband networks, not only auditory information (speech signal) but also visual information (moving image of talker’s face) can be transferred easily.

Issue 144 AUGUST 30TH, 2021 I and so many of us are saddened by the passing of Nanci Griffith at 68. Some singers are good, some are truly great, and the rare few can move you to tears. Nanci Griffith was one of the rare few. Charlie Watts is no longer with us. To say we lost a giant (at age 80) would be to seriously understate the man’s titanic talent and influence. Watts was the Rolling Stones' driving force, a rock-steady powerhouse, yet one who also played with an inimitable sense of jazz-informed swing. The rock world will never again be the same. We are honored to announce a new contributor: Ed Kwok. Ed spent his formative years taking things apart. He subsequently trained as an electrical engineer at Imperial College London in the 1980s, and got caught up in the high-end wave. His early ambition was to be an analog audio designer, but he ended up in digital military electronics. Ed then retired from engineering and relocated back to Hong Kong to concentrate on a financial career. He enjoys the computer audio space, considering it partly science and partly high-end art. Ed founded the Asia Audio Society (asiaaudiosoc.com) with some like-minded friends, with the aim of crystallizing the essence of high-end audio reproduction. In this issue: Ray Chelstowski interviews Stephen Duffy, whose post-Duran Duran band the Hawks has been an undiscovered gem – until now. J.I. Agnew begins an interview series with Martin Theophilus and the remarkable Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording.

THE B.A.S. SPEAKER Coordinating Editor: James Brinton THE BOSTON AUDIO SOCIETY Production Manager: Robert Borden P.O. BOX 7 Copy Editor: Joyce Brinton BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02215 Staff: Richard Akell, Stuart Isveck, Lawrence Kaufman, John Schlafer, James Topali, Peter Watters, Harry Zwicker VOLUME 4, NUMBER 10 JULY 1976 THE BOSTON AUDIO SOCIETY DOES NOT ENDORSE OR CRITICIZE PRODUCTS, DEALERS, OR SERVICES. OPINIONS EXPRESSED HEREIN REFLECT THE VIEWS OF THEIR AUTHORS AND ARE FOR THE INFORMATION OF THE MEMBERS. In This Issue This is a usual, run-of-the-mill, jam-packed issue of The BAS Speaker. The feature articles include another contribution from Dan Shanefield, this time on the audibility of phase shift in high- fidelity systems, especially loudspeakers—a hot topic of late, as a number of firms now are touting phase-coherent speaker systems. Shanefield helps us decide whether they are worth the shouting. Speaker designer Roy Cizek explores a topic heretofore somewhat devalued—the size of speaker wire needed for best combined amplifier-speaker performance. This topic has generally been overlooked since some observers decided merely that larger gauge was better, but Roy not only has done the math to show why heavier wire is better, but notes deleterious effects of small gauge wire on other aspects than (the normally referred to) damping factor. You will be surprised at the number of parameters a simple thing like choice of speaker-wire gauge can affect. You may only think you own a 400-watt amplifier.. This month marks the first in a hoped for series of "Sonnets (bad pun) from the Japanese" so to speak, beginning with descriptions of some forthcoming Japanese products and a discourse on one of the better Japanese high-fidelity magazines.
