COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION

OF ART

1932 At the request of the Organizing Committee, Xth Olympiad, Los Angeles, Cali fornia, the responsibility of this Competition and Exhibition of Art in relation to Sport was undertaken by The American Federation of Arts, Washington, D.C.

The Competition and Exhibition were organized and assembled under the super vision of the Chairman, Olympic Fine Arts Committee, General Charles H. Sherrill, now American Ambassador to Turkey, by Miss Leila Mechlin, Secretary of The American Federation of Arts, as General Director, in consultation with a distinguished advisory committee.

The European exhibits were in almost all instances assembled by the Olympic Committees of the several Nations. The Swedish exhibit was assembled by Mr. Anshelm Schultzberg, representing the Royal Academy of Stockholm, and has been approved by the Swedish Olympic Committee. The American exhibit was assembled by Miss Leila Mechlin with the approval of The American Olympic Committee.

To be entered in competition for honors in this exhibition works were required to be (a) by living artists (b) produced during the IXth Olympiad, that is, since January 1st, 1928, (c) related to sport and (d) approved by the Olympic Com mittee of the nation under which the artist claims citizenship.

Works not conforming to these conditions have been entered hors concours as amplifying exhibits (marked with an asterisk) and were invited by the Chairman of the Fine Arts Committee, General Charles H. Sherrill or, under his authori zation, by Miss Leila Mechlin, for the American Section, and Mr. Guillaume Lerolle for European countries not otherwise represented.

Thanks are due the Board of Governors of the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art for providing in their Museum galleries for display of the Exhibi tion, and to Dr. W . A. Bryan and his staff for generous and efficient cooperation. ART SECTION, XTH OLYMPIAD
