No.151 Repair Unit. The aircraft was fitted out as a VIP aircraft, with kitchen, armchairs, settees, cocktail cabinet and toilet and used for a time by Lord Montgomery, and in 1947 by Lord Wavell. Flown at this time in overall silver colour scheme. 11 Mar 46 BAFO Communications Wing, Buckeburg. From 1946 - 49 KN645 was used as the personal aircraft of the British Military Governors of Germany - MRAF Sir Sholto Douglas, later Lord Douglas of Kirtleside and subsequently General Sir Brian Robertson later Lord Robertson of Oakridge. Duties at this time included weekly Thursday trips to Berlin for Control Commission of Germany meetings. -

Large print guide BATTLE OF BRITAIN Ops Block Battle of Britain: Ops Block This Operations Block (Ops Block) was the most important building on the airfield during the Battle of Britain in 1940. From here, Duxford’s fighter squadrons were directed into battle against the Luftwaffe. Inside, you will meet the people who worked in these rooms and helped to win the battle. Duration: approximately 4 minutes DUXFORD ROOM Duxford’s Role The Battle of Britain was the first time that the Second World War was experienced by the British population. During the battle, Duxford supported the defence of London. Several squadrons flew out of this airfield. They were part of Fighter Command, which was responsible for defending Britain from the air. To coordinate defence, the Royal Air Force (RAF) divided Britain into geographical ‘groups’, subdivided into ‘sectors.’ Each sector had an airfield known as a ‘sector station’ with an Operations Room (Ops Room) that controlled its aircraft. Information about the location and number of enemy aircraft was communicated directly to each Ops Room. This innovative system became known as the Dowding System, named after its creator, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, the head of Fighter Command. The Dowding System’s success was vital to winning the Battle of Britain. Fighter Command Group Layout August 1940 Duxford was located within ‘G’ sector, which was part of 12 Group. This group was primarily responsible for defending the industrial Midlands and the north of England, but also assisted with the defence of the southeast as required. -

NATIONAL SAMPLE FROM THE 1851 CENSUS OF GREAT BRITAIN LIST OF SAMPLE CLUSTERS The listing is arranged in four columns, and is listed in cluster code order, but other orderings are available. The first column gives the county code; this code corresponds with the county code used in the standardised version of the data. An index of the county codes forms Appendix 1 The second column gives the cluster type. These cluster types correspond with the stratification parameter used in sampling and have been listed in Background Paper II. Their definitions are as follows: 11 English category I 'Communities' under 2,000 population 12 Scottish category I 'Communities' under 2,000 population 21 Category IIA and VI 'Towns' and Municipal Boroughs 26 Category IIB Parliamentary Boroughs 31 Category III 'Large non-urban communities' 41 Category IV Residual 'non-urban' areas 51 Category VII Unallocable 'urban' areas 91 Category IX Institutions The third column gives the cluster code numbers. This corresponds to the computing data set name, except that in the computing data set names the code number is preceded by the letters PAR (e.g. PAR0601). The fourth column gives the name of the cluster community. It should be noted that, with the exception of clusters coded 11,12 and 91, the cluster unit is the enumeration district and not the whole community. Clusters coded 11 and 12, however, correspond to total 'communities' (see Background Paper II). Clusters coded 91 comprise twenty successive individuals in every thousand, from a list of all inmates of institutions concatenated into a continuous sampling frame; except that 'families' are not broken, and where the twenty individuals come from more than one institution, each institution forms a separate cluster. -
