American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association Journalism and Photo Contest winners posted now at http://beta.motorsportsforum.com/ris01/aarwbawi.htm France Family Voted Newsmaker of the Half-Century 842-7005 Original painting by AARWBA member Hector Cademartori - IMS photo by Ron McQueeney The France Family, whose vision and leadership turned NASCAR stock car racing from a loosely-organized Southern-based attraction into the country’s second-most popular sport, was named Newsmaker of the Half- Century by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association during the annual AARWBA members breakfast in Indianapolis May 28. Newsmaker of the Half-Century, determined by vote of AARWBA members, is the most important event of AARWBA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. The France family received 28.5 percent of the vote among 12 nominees for the award. A record number of AARWBA members participated, according to President Dusty Brandel. The Hulman-George family, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and responsible for building the Indy 500 into the world’s largest single- day sporting spectacle, finished second in the voting with 26.3 percent. The two families combined to capture almost 55 percent of the total vote. Lesa France Kennedy, president of International Speedway Corp., was present for the announcement. She accepted a specially commissioned painting, by artist Hector Cademartori, depicting the family’s 50 years of achievement from Brandel and AARWBA 50th Anniversary Celebration Chairman Michael Knight. -

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb A Quick History Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson to explore the Great Plains, Lt. Zebulon Pike first saw Pikes Peak in 1806 from the eastern portion of today’s Colorado in 1806. As he approached the magnificent peak, rising abruptly from the plains, Pike swore this 14,114-foot mountain would never be conquered by man. Zebulon Pike never scaled the mountain which bears his name. But today, Pikes Peak has been climbed by tourists from all over the world in cars, on horseback, on foot, on motorcycle and bicycle. Most visitors are overcome by its beauty, including Katherine Lee Bates, who was inspired by the view from the summit to compose America the Beautiful in 1893. Pike could have imagined neither motorcars nor the automobile race course which would conclude at the summit of his peak a little over a century after his first sighting. By 1900, a carriage road had been built. On August 12, 1901, two 1 Denver men named Yont and Felker were the first to drive to the top. Their trip in a two-cylinder Locomobile Steamer took just over nine hours and was accomplished by pushing as well as driving their motorcar. Spencer Penrose, one of Colorado Springs’ city’s major benefactors, realized the tourist potential of such a beautiful landmark. In 1915 Penrose finished converting the narrow carriage road into the Pikes Peak Highway. In order to publicize his adopted hometown and his new road he devised a simple plan; run an automobile race to the summit of Pikes Peak on the new highway. -

As a result of the fading performance car market and in the face of fierce competition from foreign carmakers, U.S. automotive manufacturer support of motorsports dwindled. At the end of the 1970 season, Ford announced it was ending its racing program. Other Detroit manufacturers soon followed suit. This pull-back dramatically affected those racing series that relied heavily on manufacturer support, most notably SCCA’s Trans- Am Series that had exploded in popularity as a result of the pony car market’s success. The Ontario Effect Ontario Motor Speedway splashed onto the racing scene in the late ’60s with a reported $25.5 million invested into a state-of-the-art facility that was built about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, only 15 miles from Riverside.
