CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND INFORMATION

Facts about Nashville, Tennessee:

Nashville is known either as Music City USA or Athens of the South. The city has architectural attractions like The Parthenon, a full scale replica of the Greek temple and the only one in the world. The city has a long tradition of influencing the development of country music in America and this can be seen in sites such as Music Row, the , the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and others. The city is home to Belle Meade Plantation, which is known as the cradle of the American Thoroughbred race horse. The home of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, can be found in Nashville. Today, Nashville is still the center of country music and its growing economy attracts tourists, travelers, and business executives.

Any night of the week, the Nashville music scene is alive and happening. Other types of performances are common as well. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center presents Broadway shows. The theatre presents independent, foreign, and classic films, two theatre troupes, and cultural events. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in downtown Nashville honors the cultural significance of country music.

Sports are big in Nashville too, and it hosts professional sports teams - the NHL Nashville Predators (Hockey) and the NFL Tennessee Titans (Football). 31

WEATHER:

Nashville is blessed with four distinct but mild seasons and an abundance of warmth and sunshine.

Spring is a delightful time in Middle Tennessee as the rolling hills are a lush, vibrant green. Because of the mild climate found here, many are well suited for the area including tulips, azaleas, irises, magnolias and dogwoods. Days are warm while evenings can be chilly.

Summer is ablaze with many concert festivals in Music City. Several nights during the week have live outdoor concerts scattered around town. Midday can be very warm as the humidity tends to be higher in the summer months. Light clothing and sunscreen is recommended for the full season.

Fall is a celebrated time throughout Tennessee. Visitors come from all over to see the annual changing of the leaves in mid-October. Days are warm and pleasant. Evenings require a sweater or light jacket. Since the weather is changeable, layered clothing is a good idea to accommodate sunny days and cooler nights.

Winter is a great time to visit the city's many attractions decked out in their holiday finery as Nashville truly shines throughout the winter with millions of twinkling lights. Although the climate is mild, winter temperatures do range from cool to cold. If a snowfall occurs, it is usually in January or February and is seldom heavy.

When you walk through the doors of the historic Ryman Auditorium, one thing becomes clear right away: this isn’t just another nightly music venue, and it’s so much more than a daytime tourist stop. This place is hallowed ground. This is the exact spot where bluegrass was born, where Johnny Cash met June Carter, where souls were saved and a slice of history was nearly lost. It was right here that country music found an audience beyond its own back porch, and countless careers took off as deals were signed on napkins and paper scraps backstage. This is a building where anything is possible: a soul can find redemption, a crumbling building can find salvation, and an unknown kid with a guitar can find their name in lights.

Additionally, when The Hermitage was opened to the public as a presidential home, Alfred was the first tour guide telling visitors authentic stories about President Andrew Jackson. When Alfred died in 1901, his funeral was held in the center hall of the mansion, and he was buried in the family garden next to the President himself. Alfred was the only non-family member buried in Rachel’s garden. www.thehermitage.com

VI. Transportation

Information and Conditions of Transportation:

Your job site of activity is approximately 0.6 miles from your housing address. Gaylord Opryland has a shuttle bus that picks up at the Inn at Opryland and will drop you off at your job site of activity. The bus is for guests, however all STARS can use the bus as well.

Here are other options for transportation in the area:

Option 1: Take a fare based MTA public bus transit near your housing which should take around 1 - 2 hours to get to your work site, depending on bus routes and schedule.

(Most bus routes have their last pickup of the day between 6 p.m. - 11 p.m. You will need to review the specific route schedule on MTA’s website to find out the last pickup times of the day for your specific route.)

You can use the Trip Planner to enter your starting location and desired location to get information on what bus stop to board the bus and how long your route will take. http://ride.nashvillemta.org/

This feature allows you to plan your bus route by entering the date and time that you would like to arrive at your destination or begin your trip. The trip planner will provide three options with the travel time and number of transfers.

Simply put your starting location in the start field and your arrival destination in the end field. Add your destination or arrival time and click Get Directions. If you do not receive directions, you may need to list Nashville, TN within the option fields to narrow the search.

Google Maps also provides walking directions to assist you in reaching your destination once you get off a bus and has street views to help you find the closest transit stop and become familiar with your destination before you get there.
