Politics, Protest, Emotion: Interdisciplinary Perspectives
4 Memory and history on the 2016 CND march in London David McQueen, Bournemouth University The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) rally in London on February 27th 2016 was described in the media as ‘the biggest anti- nuclear weapons rally in a generation’,attracting tens of thousands who marched from Speaker’s Corner to Trafalgar Square. Memories of the enormous 1981 and ‘83 demonstrations in London, when at least a quarter of a million people poured into Hyde Park,haunted the day. That was at the height of tensions between the US and NATO allies and the Soviet Bloc over medium range ‘cruise missiles’. These tensions, declassified documents show, almost led to a pre-emptive nuclear strike in 1983,triggered by a large-scale U.S. military exercise in Eastern Europe called Able Archer. The events were recently fictionalised in the German television series Deutschland 83, which continues to promote the Cold War myth that members of the peace movement were naive stooges of the Soviet Union, heavily infiltrated by Warsaw Pact spies (gay spies at that).Some things never change – and history tends to repeat itself when it comes to protest movements and how they are represented (when they are represented at all) in the media. 18 Politics, Protest, Emotion: Interdisciplinary Perspectives Credit: © David and Isobel McQueen Emerging from Paddington Station on a grey wintry Saturday with my daughter, Isobel, who was going on her first political rally, we spoke to two elderly protestors, a husband and wife from Wales. All three cities have remained foci of political and economic power over several centuries. The historical development of each city has been marked by numerous shifts in the spatial distribution of political power and its representation, and the installation of hundreds of memorials to a plethora of subjects throughout their built fabric. Each new memorial in these respective cities must find a place within a complex constellation of existing forms, settings, and values, and each new work also contributes to an ongoing redefinition of priorities regarding collective memory and identity. In each city, commemorative works have to fit within a constantly evolving landscape, potentially undermining their long-term effectiveness as markers of memory.

PROJECT TITLE: ANIMALS AT WAR AUTHOR: SHARON MOHRMANN SUBJECT & GRADE LEVEL ELEMENTARY 4TH GRADE CLASSROOM PRACTICE (DOCUMENT #1) 1. HI Overview & Teaching Thesis: Animals at War is designed for upper elementary school students in 4th/5th grade. Students will be introduced to the kit with a story about a young child who uses a service dog in her everyday life and why this animal is so important to her survival. Young children are fascinated with animals and superheroes and this unit combines both of these interests into one. Animals played a key role during World War I and World War II and were used in a variety of ways. Countless animals provided tasks that would not have been possible by humans and their stories have been recorded in pictures, journals, legal documents, letters and newspaper articles. During this kit, students will work in pairs or small groups to use a variety of primary source documents to research 8 different animal breeds. Through this research, they will discover how the animal served, when they served, and how they were remembered. Interactive global mapping is embedded in both lessons to enable the students to see the impact that the wars had on the entire world geographically. 2. Suggested Grade Level and Length of Activities: 4th /5th Grade: Two (1 hour) lessons 3. Significance & Relevance: Most students in American classrooms get their first exposure to World War I and World War II in 4th or 5th grade. This kit has been created with preselected materials that are sensitive to the developmental age of 10-12 year olds.

Animals of War
ANIMALS OF WAR In Great Britain, Remembrance (or Armistice Day) is observed by a tribute of silence on the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, when hostilities of the Great War ended. The Great War was followed by the Second World War - a conflict that resulted in the deaths of up to 60 million people. This month the Learning Curve are remembering the huge sacrifices made by thousands of animals during the First and Second World Wars. The ‘Animals in War’ Memorial in London’s Hyde Park is inscribed with the words ‘They had no choice,’ yet they unreservedly applied their strength, perseverance, loyalty and intelligence in a way that influenced the course and success of the British and Allied war effort. Please read on to discover some of their incredible stories, with information about the PDSA Dickin Medal, the Animals in War Memorial and the history behind the purple poppy. Lest We Forget Animal Stories Dogs The dog's innate qualities of intelligence and devotion were valued and used by the forces in conflicts throughout the century. Among their many duties, these faithful animals ran messages, laid telegraph wires, detected mines, dug out bomb victims and acted as guard or patrol dogs. Many battled on despite horrific wounds and in terrifying circumstances to the limit of their endurance, showing indomitable courage and supreme loyalty to their handlers. Rob a War Dog Rob, a¬ Collie (War Dog No. 471/332 Special Air Service) was awarded the PDSA Dickin medal on 22nd January 1945. Citation: “Took part in landings during North African Campaign with an Infantry unit and later served with a Special Air Unit in Italy as patrol and guard on small detachments lying-up in enemy territory.
