Sam Steward Was a Bon-Vivant Chum Whose Life, Like Chris- Topher Isherwood’S, Was a Cabaret
©Jack Fritscher, Ph.D. Pre-Publication Web Posting 211 THE TALENTED MR. STEWARD San Francisco’s Connection to the Gay Bestseller Shocking the Nation Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist, and Sexual Renegade, by Justin Spring In transparency, rather than review Secret Historian, I can best, as a SOMA historian, give heads-up about the authenticity of my friend Justin Spring’s important biography of my longtime friend Samuel Steward. Born in 1909, Steward defied the stress of the anti-gay century when owning one gay photograph meant jail. He defiantly documented gay culture in his books, sex diaries (1924- 1973), tattoo journals, and activist input to his beloved mentor Dr. Kinsey at the Institute for Sex (1949-1956). His anxiety-driven life was an existential pile-on of family dysfunction, literary ambi- tion, alcohol, celebrities, speed, hustlers, censorship, inter-racial S&M, rage against ageing, and a soul shared with an unborn twin in his left testicle. As Gertrude Stein warned her “dear Sammy,” his every gorgeous vice sliced away at his self-esteem until he died December 31, 1993. New York author Spring was researching his book Paul Cad- mus: The Male Nude when in 2001 he discovered the “cold case” of Steward stored in a San Francisco attic. Since 1969, I have been eyewitness to Steward’s story, and can testify to the pitch- perfect authenticity of Spring’s character study which downloads the analog diaries and letters without overpowering Steward’s outrageously risque voice. At Stonewall, gay character changed. Reading Secret Histo- rian, you see why it had to. -

Steward, Samuel (1909-1993) by Craig Kaczorowski
Steward, Samuel (1909-1993) by Craig Kaczorowski Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2007 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Samuel Steward was a college professor, tattoo artist, and author. While he published extensively under his given name, he is perhaps best remembered for the extraordinarily literate and explicit gay male erotica he published under the pseudonym Phil Andros. In the words of Terence Kissack, the executive director of the GLBT Historical Society, "Steward is among the most fascinating figures of post-World War II queer culture." Born Samuel Morris Steward on July 23, 1909, in Woodsfield, Ohio, he was the only son of an auditor and an elementary school teacher. His mother died when he was a boy and he was effectively raised by two of his aunts, who owned a boarding house. Steward lived in Woodsfield until the age of 18, when he (along with his aunts) moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1927 to attend Ohio State University. After earning bachelor's (cum laude; 1931), master's (1932), and doctoral (1934) degrees from Ohio State University, he spent the next twenty years in academia. Steward was a professor of English at Carroll College, Helena, Montana from 1934 to 1935 and from 1935 to 1936 assistant professor of English at State College of Washington (now Washington State University) in Pullman, Washington. He was dismissed from that position in 1936, however, due to the portrayal of prostitution in his novel Angels on the Bough, published that same year. Steward subsequently moved to Chicago, where he taught as an associate professor of English at Loyola University from 1936 to 1946 and at DePaul University from 1948 to 1954. -

Bookshelf by Lydia Pyne
“The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic: the books take ordinary— even banal—objects and animate them with a rich history of invention, political struggle, science, and popular mythology. Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. Be warned: once you’ve read a few of these, you’ll start walking around your house, picking up random objects, and musing aloud: ‘I wonder what the story is behind this thing?’ Steven Johnson, author of Where Good Ideas Come From and How We Got to Now “In 1957 the French critic and semiotician Roland Barthes published Mythologies, a groundbreaking series of essays in which he analysed the popular culture of his day, from laundry detergent to the face of Greta Garbo, professional wrestling to the Citroën DS. This series of short books, Object Lessons, continues the tradition. Melissa Harrison, Financial Times PRAISE FOR HOTEL BY JOANNA WALSH: “A slim, sharp meditation on hotels and desire. ... Walsh invokes everyone from Freud to Forster to Mae West to the Marx Brothers. She’s funny throughout, even as she documents the dissolution of her marriage and the peculiar brand of alienation on offer in lavish places. Dan Piepenbring, The Paris Review “Evocative ... Walsh’s strange, probing book is all the more affecting for eschewing easy resolution. Publishers Weekly “Walsh’s writing has intellectual rigour and bags of formal bravery ... Hotel is a boldly intellectual work that repays careful reading. Its semiotic wordplay, circling prose and experimental form may prove a refined taste, but in its deft delineation of a complex modern phenomenon—and, perhaps, a modern malaise—it’s a great success. -
