  • 2. Nat Phillips Collection Finding
NAT PHILLIPS COLLECTION FINDING AID FRYER Library, The University of Queensland (UQFL9) Comprising eleven boxes of miscellanea, including scripts, scores, jokes, lyrics, business and legal papers, and photographs, the Nat Phillips Collection is the most extensive collection of early twentieth-century Australian variety ephemera in existence. While the bulk of the collection is ephemera belonging to Nat Phillips, including items associated with the Stiffy and Mo Revue Company and Fullers' Theatres, it also includes manuscripts and miscellanea belonging to John N. McCallum and Cremorne Theatre (including Will Mahoney and Walter Johnson), Tom Armstrong and Jack Phillips. One of the most significant aspects of the Nat Phillips collection is that it provides us with a much clearer understanding of the Australian larrikin personas developed by Phillips and Rene. Although based on Irish and Jewish theatrical types, Stiffy and Mo found much appeal with audiences throughout the country, capturing the same spirit that was emanating from the larrikin Aussie soldier of the First World War. The collection, which through accidental good fortune survived all odds, is now also able to serve as a reminder to historians and cultural theorists that popular entertainment is an area worthy of much further study. The Collection was discovered through sheer luck in 1972 when University of Queensland lecturer Dr Robert Jordan (later professor of drama at the University of New South Wales) and his first wife were looking through a Brisbane bric-a-brac shop. The Jordans notified the Fryer Library of the boxes and they were apparently purchased for a nominal sum. Descendants of Phillips' brother, Jack, have since informed the Library that the boxes possibly disappeared during a bitter divorce between Jacob "Jack" Phillips (Nat's brother) and his wife.

In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core at doi.org/10.1017/9781108614306. derek b. scott is Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds.

  • “To Be an American”: How Irving Berlin Assimilated Jewishness and Blackness in His Early Songs
“To Be an American”: How Irving Berlin Assimilated Jewishness and Blackness in his Early Songs A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2011 by Kimberly Gelbwasser B.M., Northwestern University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2006 Committee Chair: Steven Cahn, Ph.D. Abstract During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Mediterranean countries arrived in the United States. New York City, in particular, became a hub where various nationalities coexisted and intermingled. Adding to the immigrant population were massive waves of former slaves migrating from the South. In this radically multicultural environment, Irving Berlin, a Jewish- Russian immigrant, became a songwriter. The cultural interaction that had the most profound effect upon Berlin’s early songwriting from 1907 to 1914 was that between his own Jewish population and the African-American population in New York City. In his early songs, Berlin highlights both Jewish and African- American stereotypical identities. Examining stereotypical ethnic markers in Berlin’s early songs reveals how he first revised and then traded his old Jewish identity for a new American identity as the “King of Ragtime.” This document presents two case studies that explore how Berlin not only incorporated stereotypical musical and textual markers of “blackness” within two of his individual Jewish novelty songs, but also converted them later to genres termed “coon” and “ragtime,” which were associated with African Americans.

  • Lyrics and Music
Soundtrack for a New Jerusalem Lyrics and Music By Lily Meadow Foster and Toliver Myers EDITED by Peter Daniel The 70th Anniversary of the National Health Service 1 Jerusalem 1916 England does not have a national anthem, however unofficially the beautiful Jerusalem hymn is seen as such by many English people. Jerusalem was originally written as a preface poem by William Blake to his work on Milton written in 1804, the lyrics were added to music written by Hubert Parry in 1916 during the gloom of WWI when an uplifting new English hymn was well received and needed. Blake was in- spired by the mythical story Jesus, accompanied by Joseph of Arimathea, once came to England. This developed its major theme that of creating a heaven on earth in En- galnd, a fairer more equal country that would abolish the exploitation of working people that was seen in the ‘dark Satin mills’ of the Industrial revolution. The song was gifted by Hubert Parry to the Suffragette movement who were inspired by this vi- sion of equality. 2 Jerusalem William Blake lyrics Hubert Parry Music 1916 And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant Land Hubert Parry 1916 Words by William Blake 1804 3 Jerusalem 1916 4 Jerusalem 1916 5 Jerusalem 1916 William Blake imagined a time when Britain would be a fairer more equal society.

  • A Review of Famous Songs of the Past
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.
