This dissertation uses archival and interpretive methods to examine the life and contributions of Mary Smith McCrory Jones in Texas. Specifically, this project investigates the ways in which Mary Jones emerged into the public sphere, utilized myth and memory, and managed her life as a widow. Each of these larger areas is examined in relation to historiographicaly accepted patterns and in the larger context of women in Texas, the South, and the nation during this period. Mary Jones, 1819-1907, experienced many of the key early periods in Anglo Texas history. The research traces her family’s immigration to Austin’s Colony and their early years under Mexican sovereignty. The Texas Revolution resulted in her move to Houston and her first brief marriage. Following the death of her husband she met and married Anson Jones, a physician who served in public posts throughout the period of the Texas Republic. Over time Anson was politically and personally rejected to the point that he committed suicide. -

Doctor of Philosophy (American History), December, 1987, 419 pp., 7 illustrations, bibliography, 228 titles. The Texas Ranger tradition of over twenty-five years of frontier defense influenced the methods by which Texans provided for frontier defense, 1861-1865. The elements that guarded the Texas frontier during the war combined organizational policies that characterized previous Texas military experience and held the frontier together in marked contrast to its rapid collapse at the Confederacy's end. The first attempt to guard the Indian frontier during the Civil War was by the Texas Mounted Rifles, a regiment patterned after the Rangers, who replaced the United States troops forced out of the state by the Confederates. By the spring of 1862 the Frontier Regiment, a unit funded at state expense, replaced the Texas Mounted Rifles and assumed responsibility for frontier defense during 1862 and 1863. By mid-1863 the question of frontier defense for Texas was not so clearly defined as in the war's early days. Then, the Indian threat was the only responsibility, but the magnitude of Civil War widened the scope of frontier protection. Pre-Visit Guide Grade 4 Overview: A Frontier Fort In preparation for a visit to Fort McKavett, students will learn about the fort’s construction, its important function as a safe stopover for settlers heading west, the changing landscape of settlement in Texas in the mid- 1800s, westward expansion, and the establishment U.S. military forts. Students will also have an opportunity to imagine serving for a day as a frontier soldier at Fort McKavett. Social Studies TEKS (4) History. The student understands the political, economic, and social changes in Texas during the last half of the 19th century. The student is expected to: (D) examine the effects upon American Indian life resulting from changes in Texas, including the Red River War, building of U.S. forts and railroads, and loss of buffalo. (6) Geography. The student uses geographic tools to collect, analyze, and interpret data. The student is expected to: (A) apply geographic tools, including grid systems, legends, symbols, scales, and compass roses, to construct and interpret maps. (8) Geography. The student understands the location and patterns of settlement and the geographic factors that influence where people live. The student is expected to: (A) identify and explain clusters and patterns of settlement in Texas at different time periods such as prior to the Texas Revolution, after the building of the railroads, and following World War II. (21) Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of valid sources, including electronic technology. The student is expected to: (A) differentiate between, locate, and use valid primary and secondary sources such as computer software; interviews; biographies; oral, print, and visual material; documents; and artifacts to acquire information about the United States and Texas; (C) organize and interpret information in outlines, reports, databases, and visuals, including graphs, charts, timelines, and maps. -

Embodying the West: Lyrics from the U.S.-Mexican War Andrea Tinnemeyer A sketch of a Mexican soldier meant to illustrate, in simple pen and ink, the easy business of fulfilling manifest destiny appears within the pages of the Rough and Ready Songster,1 a collection of song lyrics from the U.S.-Mexican War.2 Dominating the drawing is the common iconography of wounds: a sling, patch, and bandages. The body is failed, defeated, unmanly. What identifies the body's owner is, not surprisingly, another wound—a wooden leg. This artificial limb, combined with a tripartite hat, unquestionably identify the owner of this wounded body as General Antonio Lôpez de Santa Anna, Mexico's own Napoleon. In the place of a uniform, Mexico's military leader wears a loincloth that resembles a diaper covering the ultimate site of emasculation, the groin. These physical markers reference the pseudo-scientific disciplines of phrenology and physiognomy popular in the United States at mid-nineteenth century that strove to factually bind outward appearance with the unseen qualities of morality and intelligence.3 Questions over the racial identity of Mexicans, a central debate after the 1848 peace treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo conferred citizenship on former Mexican citizens, would turn to these quasi-scientific models to deny rights and privileges. Duncanville, Texas August, 1939 7 s PREFACE The following chapters attempt to show the work that has been done toward restoration, preservation, and marking of historic spots in Texas by patriotic societies, individuals, civic groups, the Centennial Commission, and other agencies. It has not been the purpose of the writer to go into de- tails regarding every one of the sites and individual markers, especially in instances in which several of the same type were erected. In such cases a general description of the markers is given, together with a general idea of the type of inscription that appears on them. Since so much was done by the Centennial Commission, more attention has been devoted to its activities than to those of other organizations un- able to carry out such an extensive program. Credit is due a great many organizations, societies, and individuals that have helped to further the memory of the past by aiding in the program. In many instances it has been necessary to rely upon in- formation from magazines, newspapers, Chamber of Commerce bul- letins, pamphlets, and personal letters, because of the lack of recorded material. The information obtained, however, has been weighed and carefully compared with other sources on the same subject until its authenticity is assured. -

Doctor of Philosophy (History), May, 1995, 284 pp., 14 figures, reference list, 116 titles. This dissertation describes the various military outposts on the Texas frontier between 1866 and 1886. It is arranged geographically, with each chapter covering a major fort or geographical area and the smaller posts associated with it. Official military records and government reports serve as the primary sources of data. In 1866 when the United States Army returned to the defense of Texas after four years of civil war, the state's frontier lay open to depredations from several Indian tribes and from lawless elements in Mexico. The army responded to those attacks by establishing several lines of major forts to protect the various danger areas of the frontier.
