Racked with torture, haled to slaughter, fire, and axe, and murderous sword chains and prison, foes derision they endured for Christ the Lord. 5. So they passed through pain and sorrow, till they sank in death to rest; earth's rejected, God's elected, gained a portion with the blest.

4

Made co-heirs with Christ in glory, his celestial bliss they share: may they now before him bending help us onward by their prayer; 8. that this weary life completed, and its fleeting trials past, we may win eternal glory in our Father's home at last.

2. Lo! these are they from sufferings great who came to realms of light; and in the Blood of Christ have washed those robes that shine so bright.

3. Now with triumphal palms they stand before the Throne on high, and serve the God they love amidst the glories of the sky.

4. Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor suns with scorching ray; God is their Sun, Whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day.

5

5. The Lamb, who dwells amid the throne, shall o'er them still preside, feed them with nourishment Divine, and all their footsteps guide.

6. In pastures green He'll lead His flock, where living streams appear; and God the Lord from every eye shall wipe off every tear.

INTROIT HYMN: 807

2. Who drinks the cup of sorrow thy Father gave to thee 'neath shadows of the morrow in dark Gethsemane;

3. Who on thy passion thinking can find in loss a gain, and dare to meet unshrinking thy baptism of pain.

4. O Jesu, form within us thy likeness clear and true; by thine example win us to suffer or to do.

5. This law itself fulfilleth, Christlike to Christ is nigh, and, where the Father willeth, shall sit with Christ on high.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

THE FIRST READING JEREMIAH 45:1-5 A Reading from the Word of God, written in the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Chapter 45, beginning at the first verse.

The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, “Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.” Thus you shall say to him, “Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted—that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek

8 them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go.” The Word of the Lord The people: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 7:1-10 1 O Lord my God, I take refuge in you; * save and deliver me from all who pursue me; 2 Lest like a lion they tear me in pieces * and snatch me away with none to deliver me. 3 O Lord my God, if I have done these things: * if there is any wickedness in my hands, 4 If I have repaid my friend with evil, * or plundered him who without cause is my enemy; 5 Then let my enemy pursue and overtake me, * trample my life into the ground, and lay my honor in the dust. 6 Stand up, O Lord, in your wrath; * rise up against the fury of my enemies. 7 Awake, O my God, decree justice; * let the assembly of the peoples gather round you. 8 Be seated on your lofty throne, O Most High; * O Lord, judge the nations. 9 Give judgment for me according to my righteousness, O Lord,* and according to my innocence, O Most High. 10 Let the malice of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; * for you test the mind and heart, O righteous God. Glory to the Father, and to the Son:* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now:* and shall be forever. Amen.

THE SECOND READING ACTS 11:27-12:3 The death of James the Apostle. A Reading from the Word of God, written in the , Chapter 11, beginning at the twenty-seventh verse. At that time prophets came down from to Antioch. One of them named stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in ; this they did, sending it to the elders by and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the of Unleavened Bread.) The Word of the Lord The people: Thanks be to God.

HYMN FOR THE GRADUAL St. Kevin 7.6.7.6 D ("Come Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain") Sons of Thunder, James and John, left their father fishing For they found that they were drawn into Jesus' mission. Christ had strength to calm the sea and to bring great healing; Taught he with authority — God's own way revealing. As they heard the things he taught — love of God and neighbor Those ambitious thought they would ask a favor. So they said, "Give just one thing; let our words here guide you: Jesus, when you reign as king, let us sit beside you." "Can you drink the cup I drink? Can you take the suffering?" Jesus told them, "Stop and think! This is what I'm offering. Tyrants reign o'er other folk, rising to high places. You must bear a servant's yoke if you want true greatness."

10

Christ, we love the honored place and the seat of glory. Now, remind us, by your grace, of the gospel story: You gave up your life —it's true! — with a love unswerving. May all those who follow you seek a life of serving.

THE GOSPEL MATTHEW 20:20-28 Reader: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. All: Glory to Christ Our Saviour The mother of the sons of came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” This is the Gospel of Christ The people: Praise to Christ our Lord. (NRSV)

OFFERTORY HYMN: 832

1. Disposer supreme, and Judge of the earth, who choosest for thine the meek and the poor; to frail earthen vessels, and things of no worth, entrusting thy riches which aye shall endure; 2. those vessels soon fail, though full of thy light, and at thy decree are broken and gone; thence brightly appeareth thy truth in its might, as through the clouds riven the lightnings have shone. 3. Like clouds are they borne to do thy great will, and swift as the winds about the world go: the Word with his wisdom their spirits doth fill; they thunder, they lighten, the waters o'erflow.

4. Their sound goeth forth, 'Christ Jesus the Lord!' Then doth fear, his citadels fall; as when the dread trumpets went forth at thy word, and one long blast shattered the Canaanite's wall.

5. O loud be their trump, and stirring their sound, to rouse us, O Lord, from slumber of sin! The lights thou hast kindled in darkness around, O may they awaken our spirits within!

6. All honour and praise, dominion and might, to God, Three in One, eternally be, who round us bath shed his own marvellous light, and called us from darkness his glory to see.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE OFFERINGS PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE: Father, we offer you these gifts which you have given us: this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine

16 become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you PRESIDENT: Lift up your hearts. ALL: We lift them up to the Lord. President: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. ALL: It is right to give God thanks and praise. PRESIDENT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father almighty, everlasting God:

Ordinations (and feasts of Apostles) Through the great Shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after His resurrection sent forth His apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: ALL: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

17

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER - FORM E: PRESIDENT: overeign Lord and Father, S To you be glory and praise for ever. In your boundless wisdom you brought creation into being; In your great love you fashioned us in your image; In your tender compassion you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, to share our human nature; In the power of the Holy Spirit, He overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of your new creation. On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: "Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me." And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." PRESIDENT: Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved Son,

18

ALL: We remember His death; We proclaim His resurrection; We await His coming in glory. PRESIDENT: And we offer you, Father, our sacrifice of thanks and praise. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus, our Lord and Redeemer. As we partake of this holy food of new and unending life, may your Holy Spirit establish us as a royal priesthood with the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. James and all your sons and daughters who share in your eternal inheritance; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise:

ALL: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. THE LORD'S PRAYER PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your kingdom come; your will be done

19

HYMN FOR THE COMMUNION: 602

1. Let all mortal flesh keep silence and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descendeth, Our full homage to demand.

2. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture – in the body and the blood – he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food.

3. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of Light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

4. At his feet the six-winged seraph; cherubim with sleepless eye veil their faces to the Presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Lord most high.

Recessional Hymn 817

1. By all your saints still striving For all your saints at rest, Your holy name, O Jesus, For evermore be blest!
