NEED FOR TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING BACKGROUND • A tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a system that detects a tire that has low inflation pressure and warns the driver. • Because a run-flat tire is designed to be driven a limited distance and at limited speed after it loses air pressure, a method of alerting the driver had to be found. • There were two systems used, indirect and direct, until the 2008 model year when the use of direct- reading pressure systems was required by law.
