This year’s theme, the Spirit of Travel, spotlights hope and resilience in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. From tour cancelations and refunds to employee furloughs and marketing challenges, you are likely recovering from the most difficult quarter of your tourism career. It is clear this is group travel’s toughest time to date, but by opening this magazine, you are confronting the challenge head-on. Time and time again, our industry has proven the Spirit of Travel cannot be broken. Through every hardship, Group Tour Media has watched tour planners innovatively adapt to emerge stronger and wiser. That being said, now is the time to quiet the mind and develop plans for future tours. This month, we feature a few of these well-known folk, who showcase their work year after year to the delight of visitors. On August 12-13, don’t make the mistake of passing their studios by: these hardworking creatives are always exploring new ideas, subjects, and techniques, and it is exciting to see what new paintings, sculptures, and photographs they have in store. At the Denman Island Art Centre hub (1016 Northwest Rd), you can find the Denman Quilters colourful display, which brightens up the grounds and helps welcome tour guests each summer. When she was a little girl, Erika Hanner became enamored by the art world, exposed to various aspects of it by her parents. As she grew older, that love of art blossomed as well.
