The recordings in this series date from the mid-1940s through the late 1950s, and will feature several which have never before appeared on CD, as well as some that have not been available in MENOTTI any form in nearly half a century. The present recording of The Consul, which makes its CD début here, was made a month after the work’s (1911– 2007) Philadelphia première. American Decca was at the time primarily a “pop” label, the home of Bing Crosby and Judy Garland, and did not yet have much experience in the area of Classical music. Indeed, this recording seems to have been done more because of the work’s critical acclaim on the Broadway stage than as an opera, since Decca had The Consul also recorded Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman with members of the original cast around the same time.

  • Shakespeare on Film and Television in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress
SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information. How to Use this Guide Entries are grouped by titles of plays and listed chronologically within the group by release/broadcast date.

His mother tells him that it’s time to go to bed. He delays as long as possible but, after being scolded by his mother, he finally takes his crutch and hobbles inside. Amahl tells his mother of a large bright star in the sky. She refuses to believe him, complaining that he is always making up tales. After Amahl and his mother go to sleep, voices are heard in the distance. There is a knock at the door and Amahl is sent to see who it is. He hastily returns and informs his mother that there are three kings at the door. Not believing him, she goes to the door herself and is stunned to discover that Amahl is, in fact, telling the truth — there are three kings at the door! The kings request lodging for the evening.

  • APRIL/MAY 1962 NEW OPERAS and PREMIERES with the Assistance of the New York State Council, the Tri-Cities Opera Company Commissioned Myron Fink to Write an Opera
BULLETIN CENTRAL OPERA SERVICE sponsored by THE NATIONAL COUNCIL of the METROPOLITAN OPERA ASS'N 147 West Thirty-ninth Street, New York 18, N.Y.PE6-120O APRIL/MAY 1962 NEW OPERAS AND PREMIERES With the assistance of the New York State Council, the Tri-Cities Opera Company commissioned Myron Fink to write an opera. It is called "J e r e- m i a h" and will receive its premiere on May 25 in the Harpur College Audit- orium in Binghampton, N,Y. performed by the Tr-Cities Opera. (The existence and operation of the New York State Council on the Arts has been assured un- til March 1, 1967, by a recent vote of the Assembly in Albany, N.Y.) "The Good Soldier Schweik" has inspired Italian composer Guido Turchi, and his opera was premiered on March 22 at Milano's La Scala. Richard Kurka's opera with the same title had its first performance during the 1957-58 season at the New York City Opera Company. ****** The Washington Irving fable "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was made into an opera, with John White as the composer and Martin Nurmi as librettist. It had its world premiere in February at Kent State University in Ohio. ****** The Biblical tragedy by Racine is the basic story after which Hugo Weisgall fashioned his short opera "A t h a 1 i e". Its premiere took place on April 9 at Town Hall, performed by the group that commissioned the work, namely, The Little Orchestra Society. ****** A "First" on these shores seems to be the production of "L o S p o s o D e 1 u s o", a one act opera by Mozart, which he never completed.
