DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN

elcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our Whome venue for what promises to be quite a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.

More of that in a moment, but first I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Beckenham Town.

The first qualifying round of the FA Vase is an exciting game, particularly for our young local players, many of whom are only half a dozen games into their senior playing careers. It’s a chance for clubs to make a bit of a name for themselves in this level of non-league football and we know Beckenham Town will be as keen to make a mark as we will. Our visitors play one step above us in the football pyramid, so it’s both a challenge and an opportunity for our team.

No one at this level of non-league football could possibly pay more attention to detail before every match than our manager Danny Fox so we know that, whatever the outcome today, the team could not have been better prepared.

The arrival of Danny and his coaching team in the summer has seen the club make huge strides in its vision of reconnecting the club to the town and building a youthful team, full of locally based players proud to represent their hometown club. The win last week, over a Frimley Green team full of players who decided against staying here when we made the managerial change, was a fully deserved reward for their hard work so far. The performance also showed how much progress they have made in such a short space of time. There’s undoubtedly much more to come from both the management team and this group of players. 04 The club’s aims, the new look team and the year history of Dorking FC. Dorking FC. With the clubhouse collapsing and structures deemed unsafe, Meadowbank, the Chicks’ home for 60 years, was condemned and the club was forced into a nomadic existence to complete the season’s fixtures. One of the most picturesque and iconic non-league football grounds in the south-east was now a ruin. With the site earmarked for development by a leading supermarket, there seemed little hope that the football ground or the club could survive.

“Meadowbank shortly after it was closed in 2013” Two seasons later and the future looks rather different. So what changed in the meantime?

Firstly, Dorking FC came under new ownership in May 2014 as the homeless club was saved from likely extinction by a group of friends - local businessmen and grassroots football enthusiasts – who converted it to a Community Interest Company, meaning the club would now be run as a social enterprise with any assets locked into community benefits. Some people who’ve followed the club for a long time find that hard, but that was a football ground from the 1950s, and this is a ground that will take us in to the 2050s.”

“We still have our memories of how it was then and now’s the time to make a load of new memories for this and future generations.” “Artist’s Impression: The new Meadowbank”

As well as being the home ground of the Dorking FC, the new Meadowbank promises to be once of the most vibrant football hubs in Surrey. Dorking Wanderers, our highly progressive partners in the Dorking Football Development Alliance, will be using the stadium 19 01306 888858 [email protected]

The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion. Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.

The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, DFC 1905-6 Squad where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey. DFC 1920-1 Squad

The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.

An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council 29 OPPOSITION HISTORY BECKENHAM TOWN FC
