RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. That the City Council designate the unnumbered location situated one sidewalk square southerly of and between numbered locations 38g and 38G as shown on Sheet 17 of Plan D-13788 for the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the installation of the name of Colin Firth at 6714 Hollywood Boulevard.

B. Inform the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce of the Council's action on this matter.

C. That this report be adopted prior to the date of the ceremony on January 13, 2011.

DISCUSSION:

The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has submitted a request for insertion into the Hollywood Walk of Fame the name of Colin Firth. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, January 13,2010 at 11:30 a.m.

The communicant's request is in accordance with City Council action of October 18, 1978, under Council File No. 78-3949. Following the Council's action of approval, and upon proper application and payment of the required fee, an installation permit can be secured at 201 N. Figueroa Street, 3rd Floor, Counter 23".

Firth won the BAFTA Award in 2010 for his performance in Tom Ford's "A Single Man," which also earned him nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Firth received international critical acclaim for his starring role as 'George Falconer' in "A Single Man," based on Christopher Isherwood's 1964 novel, including being honored with the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 2009 Venice Film Festival and the Performance of the Year Award at the 2010 Santa Barbara Intemational Film Festival, as well as the London Critics Circle Film Award for British Actor of the Year. Firth will next be seen starring in feature film "The King's Speech" as King George VI, father of the current Queen Elizabeth II, who reluctantly assumes the throne after his brother, Edward VIII, abdicates. King George VI struggles to overcome a nervous stammer with the help of a speech therapist, played by Geoffrey Rush. "The King's Speech" will be released by The Weinstein Company in November 2010. In 2009 Firth made an appearance in Robert Zemeckis' "A Christmas Carol," Disney's 3D motion-capture-animated version of the classic Charles Dickens tale starring Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman. Firth was also seen starring in "Genova," directed by Michael Winterbottom. "Mamma Mia!" grossed over half a billion dollars around the world and has become the highest grossing film of all time in the UK. HOLLYWOOD, CA.-A new group of entertainers in motion pictures, television, live theater, and recording have been selected to receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, it was announced today by the Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. These individuals were chosen from among hundreds of nominations to the committee at a meeting held June 15, and ratified by the Chamber's Board of Directors.
