    West Virginia’s Forests Growing West Virginia’s Future Prepared By Randall A. Childs Bureau of Business and Economic Research College of Business and Economics West Virginia University June 2005 This report was funded by a grant from the West Virginia Division of Forestry using funds received from the USDA Forest Service Economic Action Program. Executive Summary West Virginia, dominated by hardwood forests, is the third most heavily forested state in the nation. West Virginia’s forests are increasing in volume and maturing, with 70 percent of timberland in the largest diameter size class. The wood products industry has been an engine of growth during the last 25 years when other major goods-producing industries were declining in the state. West Virginia’s has the resources and is poised for even more growth in the future. The economic impact of the wood products industry in West Virginia exceeds $4 billion dollars annually. While this impact is large, it is not the only impact on the state from West Virginia’s forests. Other forest-based activities generate billions of dollars of additional impacts. These activities include wildlife-associated recreation (hunting, fishing, wildlife watching), forest-related recreation (hiking, biking, sightseeing, etc.), and the gathering and selling of specialty forest products (ginseng, Christmas trees, nurseries, mushrooms, nuts, berries, etc.). West Virginia’s forests also provide millions of dollars of benefits in improved air and water quality along with improved quality of life for West Virginia residents. There is no doubt that West Virginia’s forests are a critical link to West Virginia’s future.

    Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship Final Report, Hrvoje Slovene House Secrets: Industrial Tales in one of the World's Most Contaminated Cities: Kabwe, Zambia For the past five years, my primary focus in photography has been to document abandoned, nineteenth-century factories and industrial spaces, as well as to show the irreparable damage modem industrialism has had on the global environment and its population. By photographing the devastating effects on local neighborhoods wrought by factories and industry, my intention has been to show how seemingly isolated problems have contributed to the global environmental crisis we are witnessing today. To date this project has taken me to Manchester, England-the birthplace of the industrial revolution; to Cleveland, Ohio; and Zagreb, Croatia. With the generous help of the Mortimer Hays- Brandeis Traveling Fellowship, I expanded this project to include Kabwe, Zambia. The mining of lead there by a Chinese-based company continues to put the population of hundreds of thousands at serious risk. Through my photographs, I showed the impact of modem industrialism on the real, day-to-day experiences of people and their industrialized habitats. Although my original intention was to visit and document the effects oflead pollution in Kabwe, Zambia; Linfen, China; and Dzerzhinsk, Russia, I found a plethora of material in Zambia, and spent the majority of my time there. I first visited Kabwe in June 2007 and stayed there for three months. During that time I got in touch with local NGOs and familiarized myself with their work on the field. During that time I also became aware of the scale of the lead pollution problem on the location.

Following the compact signing, the mining industry developed The Future Begins with Mining: A Vision of the Mining Industry of the Future. That document, completed in September 1998, describes a positive and productive vision of the U.S. mining industry in the year 2020. It also establishes long-term goals for the industry. One of those goals is: "Improved Communication and Education: Attract the best and the brightest by making careers in the mining industry attractive and promising. Educate the public about the successes in the mining industry of the 21st century and remind them that everything begins with mining." Using the Vision as guidance, the Mining Industry of the Future is developing roadmaps to guide it in achieving industry’s goals. This document represents the roadmap for education in the U.S. mining industry. Barton2,3 peleogenesis in iron ore caves may involve generation of porosity at depth with a later surficial phase associated Swith slope hydrological processes. The earlier phreatic phase results in morphological features similar to but much more irregular at wall and ceiling scale than what is observed in hypo- gene caves. Processes responsible for the generation of caves do not seem to follow normal karst geochemical paths, but instead occur through bacterially mediated redox reactions. INTRODUCTION Caves and small voids in iron-rich rocks have been reported in the Brazilian geological literature since the 19th Century, but only recently, due to the expansion of iron mines, have they been subject to detailed studies. Initial research was performed by American geologists from the United States Geological Sur- vey in the Iron Quadrangle region of southeastern Brazil, with George C. Simmons providing pioneering insights on cave gen- esis and mineralogy (Simmons, 1963; 1964). Since 2005, with the increase in iron ore prices and the regulatory mandate to as- sess the significance of any void over 5 m in length, intensive research has resulted in the identification of approximately 3,000 caves, the majority of them being located in the two major iron ore provinces, Carajás ridge in northern Brazil (Amazonia) and the Iron Quadrangle area (Fig. 1). Cave mapping and geospele- ological studies have provided new insights on the morphology and genesis of these enigmatic and little known caves.
