August 22nd, 2021 PǂǔǕǐǓ’ǔ CǐǓǏdžǓ TǘdžǏǕǚFNJǓǔǕ SǖǏDžǂǚ NJǏ OǓDžNJǏǂǓǚ TNJǎdž Dear Parishioners and Friends of St Denis, Monday of this week, August 23rd, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Rose of Lima. This is a special day for the Dominican Order, because St. Rose is one of us. She was not a nun or a sister, but she was a lay member of the Dominican Third Order, who lived in her parents’ home in Lima, Peru for the short thirtyone years of her life. Perhaps St. Rose is best known for being the first canonized Saint of the “New World.” She died in Lima in 1617 and was canonized a saint by Pope Clement X just 54 years later in 1671. Her funeral Mass in 1617 brought the bustling city of Lima to a standstill, as the whole city turned out to pay their respects. Saint Rose’s baptismal name was Isabel Flores de Olivia, however, she was regarded by everyone as very beautiful, which earned her the nickname “Rose.” When she received the Sacrament of Confirmation, she took the name Rose for herself. Rose’s parents never understood their very pious and prayerful daughter. They wanted her to make a good marriage, but Rose wanted to consecrate her chastity to the Lord. She was eventually given permission, at the age of twenty, to join the MASS INTENTIONS Third Order of St. Dominic. Her father eventually came around to let his daughter live the life of prayer and penance she wanted to follow, but St. Rose’s relationship with her own mother was Sat., Aug. 21 5:00 pm M †John Moorehouse always a difficult one and a source of additional penance for Sun., Aug. 22 TǘdžǏǕǚFNJǓǔǕ SǖǏDžǂǚ NJǏ OǓDžNJǏǂǓǚ TNJǎdž Rose.
