Into Extra Time FEB 2016 Living through the final stages of cancer and jottings along the way Michael Paul Gallagher 978-0-232-53252-4, Paperback (216x135 mm), £9.99, 144pp HRCS: Christian spirituality and religious experience

• Unique personal and theological insight from popular Catholic author who died from cancer in November 2015

• Includes extracts from his chemo diary, and articles on Unbelief, and Living Faith

• Former Rector of Bellarmino College, Rome, and lecturer at University College, Dublin

In January 2015, priest and theologian, Michael Paul Gallagher, was diagnosed with cancer - he had a tumor, ‘a nasty one’ according to his doctor. After months of chemotherapy Gallagher succumbed to the disease, passing away in November 2015.

Into Extra Time is Gallagher’s final book, written in the knowledge that his death was imminent. It started as a diary for himself, trying to explore his experience of illness. But it became clear that the story of a believer going through stages of cancer could offer some spiritual light for others in such times of struggle.

The book is split into sections. The first dealing with themes that people of faith suffering terminal illness may come face to face with, from darkness and revelation to springboards including imagination, transformation and transcendence. The second section serves as Gallagher’s own emotive cancer diary, evoking what he termed the ‘waves of fog and shafts of light’ central in his experience.

Michael Paul Gallagher was a priest, lecturer and popular author on faith and culture. His books for DLT include Faith Maps and Clashing Symbols. He died in November 2015 from cancer. Location: n/a. Online/Social Media: n/a. Marketing/PR

Reinders 978-0-232-53217-3, Paperback (198x126 mm), £9.99, 504pp FW: Religious and spiritual fiction • Beautiful novel set in rural Spain, introduces the story and ethos of Jean Vanier’s L’Arche communities • Jean Vanier received the 2015 Templeton Prize • Novel written in response to Jean’s request that author explain the significance of L’Arche to the world

This beautifully-written novel is based on the life and work of Jean Vanier as the founder and leader of the communities of L’Arche. The fictional story it tells seeks to show the distinctiveness of L’Arche as a spiritual community grounded in the recognition of the shared vulnerability of human beings.

The novel tells the interwoven stories of the residents of the House of Bethany, a small community in a little village near Seville. They live together as people with and without disabilities in order to celebrate the life that God has given them.

The story begins with the arrival of Jonathan, a young American who has left home to escape the life his father had designed for him. Through Jonathan we meet other members of the community, all ‘battered souls’ in different ways: Lucie, a ‘flittering bird’, without speech and with only very little understanding; Fernando, a young man whose abandonment by his father left him speechless; Joaquin Morales, a blind boy who was found living alone in the streets of Seville; Sofia, wheelchair-bound yet living her life in agony to make her mother proud; and the community’s founder Ramón, whose understanding of what the House of Bethany really means only becomes apparent when he is forced to re-evaluate his own life.

• An unprecedented book in which Pope Francis answers, in his own hand, the letters of children from around the globe • Showcases the inspiring, wise, warm and joyful faith of Pope Francis as never before • Charmingly illustrated with colourful drawings created by the children themselves • Gorgeous hardback gift book, with endpapers and full-colour throughout

If you could ask Pope Francis one question, what would it be?

Children have questions and struggles just like adults, but rarely are they given the chance to voice their concerns and ask the big questions resting deep in their hearts. In Dear Pope Francis, Pope Francis gives them that chance and celebrates their spiritual depth by directly answering questions from children around the world.

Gathered from more than 250 submissions, 30 letters from children to Pope Francis are answered in a picture book that feels akin to sitting in on a series of intimate conversations. The letters, hand-written and illustrated, are reproduced on left-hand pages, along with English translations and photos of each child; the pope’s answers appear opposite. The questions can be theologically intense (“If God loves us so much... why didn’t he defeat the devil?”), deeply personal (Ivan, a 13-year-old from China, asks whether his non-Catholic grandfather will go to heaven), or casual and blunt (“You are not very young anymore,” begins one from Dutch twins Hannes and Lidewij). The answers are rarely simple, but the pope writes respectfully and honestly, often invoking larger spiritual and social concepts while the injustices of the present are often represented, as well: “In ’s world there is so much suffering. And, unfortunately, you know that firsthand,” Francis writes to a Syrian boy, Mohammed.

A beautiful hardback book full of life and joy and colour - the perfect gift for Christenings and Confirmations and for children or adults of all ages! • A major new book on Christian mission, which has become restricted by Western culture-bound interpretations of the Gospel, inhibiting the emergence of local, contextual theologies • Senior research fellow, International Christian College, Glasgow, and author of Mission After Christendom (DLT) and The Kindness of God (IVP) • Foreword by Richard Bauckham

‘My hope is to overcome the between the academy and the congregation, suggesting ways in which cutting-edge biblical scholarship can be a positive and liberating force for Christianity in the twenty first century.’

Liberating the Gospel is prefaced by Tom Wright’s claim that Christians have for too long ‘read scripture with nineteenth-century eyes and sixteenth century questions’, and that it is urgently necessary they learn to read ‘with first century eyes and twenty first century questions’. The central section of the book concentrates on reading the narratives of the Galilean ministry of Jesus within their first century context, then exploring Paul’s mission in the setting of the urban and imperial world of Rome, before offering reflection on the Apocalypse in the changed world following the destruction of Jerusalem. Smith then concludes his treatise facing the ‘twenty first century questions’, seeking to build a hermeneutical bridge to our globalised world. As a whole this major new book on Christian mission aims to contribute toward an understanding of how the dynamic message of Christ might be liberated to be heard as genuinely good news today, in the process potentially transforming Christianity, provided there is willingness to face opposition from a world resistant to the exposure of its injustices.

Dr J Richard Smith is one of the world’s leading gynaecological surgeons with a major Harley Street women’s health clinic, and a specialist in cancer survivorship and fertility sparing surgery for women with cancer. In 2016 he will perform the very first womb transplants in the UK. A few years ago a major health scare forced Richard to question his belief in his own personal invincibility and face the reality of mortality. An inner search led him to read the spiritual classic The Way of a Pilgrim and, with the help of a Christian friend, to start practising contemplative prayer and pilgrimage.

Convinced that there are huge health benefits to be gained from the spiritual discipline of long distance walking combined with prayerful chanting, Richard has written his first book of spiritual health. The use of chant or mantra synchronised with breathing and heartbeat can help us generate a state of peace, invigoration and wellbeing conducive to greater health and can even aid recovery from severe disease such as cancer.

The Journey tells Richard’s own story, introduces readers to practices such as repetitive prayer, trance and chant, combined with health pursuits such as walking and swimming, and is illustrated with two of his own personal pilgrimages – to Patmos and Jerusalem. Dr J. Richard Smith is a gynaecological surgeon at Imperial College London and an expert in cancer survivorship and pioneering womb transplant surgery. Location: London. Online/Social Media: n/a. Living with the Mind of Christ is a book based around the practice of ‘Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction’ (MBSR) combined with the teachings on contemplative prayer from the Christian mystic tradition. MBSR has its origins in Buddhist meditation practices and is to do with learning to ‘be’, letting go of self-analysis through fixing attention on one thing before developing awareness of the quality of the attention itself.

The Christian mystical tradition is the part of Christianity which speaks of personal experience of God normally in the context of silence and stillness. Most Christian mystics talk of both finding and losing themselves in God.

There is a lot of debate as to the compatibility of ‘Mindfulness’ and Christian belief. Stefan Gillow Reynolds argues that the mystical side of Christianity supports the practice of mindfulness. It aims to show how MBSR is equivalent to the essential stages on the journey of Christian self-knowledge and does not contradict advice on prayer from Christian mystics from across the centuries. By recognising the long cultural roots of contemplative practice in the west MBSR is affirmed by the mystical voices of Christianity. Dr Stefan Gillow Reynolds is always concerned with putting mysticism into practice. He is a regular retreat giver for The World Community for Christian Meditation and gives independent seminars and talks on Christian mysticism. He has a PhD from London University in Christian Spirituality and MAs in ‘History of Christianity’ and ‘Inter-Religious Dialogue’. Thérèse Vanier was a distinguished doctor, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicans. As a haematologist, she was the first woman consultant at St Thomas’s hospital in London. She subsequently worked alongside Cecily Saunders, the founder of modern palliative care, at the world-renowned St Christopher’s Hospice; colleagues agree that it was Thérèse who did more than anyone else to bring the principles and practice of palliative medicine to a wider francophone world. At the beginning of the 1970s, she was the founder of the first L’Arche community in the UK; she continued to bring her unique blend of personal commitment and professional rigour to the development of these L’Arche communities, as well as to L’Arche’s wider international family. As a Roman Catholic, Thérèse was also deeply involved in the work for greater ecumenism among Christian churches and understanding between different faiths.

This biography, published with the full support of the Vanier family and with contributions drawn from far and wide, serves as a critical assessment of Thérèse’s legacy, a tribute to her life and as an inspiration to others to follow her example. Ann Shearer is a Jungian analyst in London and was a friend of Thérèse for many years. She has known L’Arche since the 1970s, and also knows quite a few of the people who are contributing to this project. JULY 2016 Stories, Reflections and Challenges from recent engagements in Northern Europe Ed. Andrew Wingate, Pernilla Myrelid and Leslie Nathaniel 978-0-232-53234-0, Paperback (216x135 mm), £12.99, 272pp HRCM: Christian theology. RIGHTS: World (ex Swedish language). • Stories of successful interfaith work by churches in Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the UK • Reflects the rise of religion-related violence in Nothern Europe • Contributions from all featured Scandinavian countries and UK

‘The evil forces try to say to us that everything is hopeless. Why do you waste our time on this? But we believe in the power of the word of Life and we are convinced interfaith relations are part of God’s ongoing healing of this world.’

Why Interfaith? is a timely book. 2015 has seen a spate of terrorist violence across the Middle East, Africa and in Europe claimed by Islamic State, or seemingly involving religious factors. Indeed, it is now apparent to all in the wake of the latest mass shooting in Paris that what happens in Northern Europe cannot be insulated from what happens in the wider world, and vice versa.

Meanwhile, new right-wing-populist parties have gained increasing support in many countries in Europe, some with seats in parliament. An important agenda for these parties is to save Christian societies from Islam and immigrants. At the same time there are a growing number of anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents and hate crimes reported. The dominating picture reported in the media on religion is that religion causes lots of problems and that especially Islam and Muslims are a threat to the open, democratic societies in Europe.

Religion is not a phenomenon living its own life. Religion is part of people’s lives.

This book wants to share the stories of how the churches in the Porvoo Communion in different ways are engaged in interfaith work. Andrew Wingate, Pernilla Myrelid and Leslie Nathaniel are interfaith specialists in the UK and in Sweden. Location: Andrew Wingate - Leicester. Online/Social Media: n/a.

Alex Wright observes the beauty of the physical landscape and combines observation and reflection with memories of human turmoil’ - Mona Siddiqui, OBE, Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies, University of Edinburgh

• Helps the reader find God in the shadows, in the hidden, sometimes overlooked, corners where one might least expect to find him and to accept doubt as part of an evolving faith

• Draws on a variety of biblical, philosophical and cultural texts including: The Book of Job, Pascal, Bonhoeffer, Virginia Woolf and Simone Weil

• Pertinent to current debates about the place of religion in public life

• Written in an eloquent literary style

Exploring Doubt discusses the rich and varied ways in which answers to ‘the big questions’ – questions about faith, belief, authenticity and the existence of ‘something else’ – have always been most effectively articulated through the language not of absolute conviction, but of the marvelously improbable and ultimately unknowable. Alex Wright is Executive Editor for Classical Studies and Religion at I.B.Tauris, where he is also general editor of the I.B.Tauris Short Histories series. This book sifts through some of these popular practices that some individual Christians and local churches are adapting but of which others are wary, and asks whether or not they should really be considered off-limits.

Citizen’s Income – often called a Basic Income - is an unconditional, nonwithdrawable income paid automatically to every individual as a right of citizenship. It operates on a similar principle to the National Health Service - free at point of use for every legal resident.

The idea of an unconditional payment for every citizen has been around at least since Thomas Paine in the eighteenth century. In the modern day Malcolm Torry and the Citizen’s Income Trust have promoted debate and understanding of its feasibility as a national social policy.

Citizen’s Income is an act of grace. In this book Torry demonstrates the association between Citizen’s Income and Christianity with the ultimate aim of demonstrating Citizen’s Income as a Christian social policy, while calling for greater Church involvement in a wide-ranging debate on the subject.

Each chapter begins with a biblical text, outlines an aspect of the Christian faith, and then asks about the relationship between the aspect in question and the characteristics and effects of a Citizen’s Income.

Malcolm Torry is the Director of the Citizen’s Income Trust, and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics. He has long researched and written many articles on the reform of the benefits system, and particularly the desirability and feasibility of increased coverage of unconditional and nonwithdrawable benefits; the characteristics and management of religious and faith-based organisations.
