A W ORD TO THE CLAN

Inasmuch as we have been holding reunions since 32 w d s eem 1 9 , it oul that a genealogical record of this f m w branch of the P ayne a ily ould be of some interest . In collecting data it has been necessary to make nu I f v mer ou s inquiries . have always ound e eryone cour t eous and willing to do their bit . “ Much time and p a tience has been expended in the endeavor to make a correct record and if an error ' is i found vour t olerance s reques ted . In some instances it wa s m b m t i possi le to obtain co ple e dates , therefore blank i pages have been nserted for your convenience .

/ by M a r y L oved mg H o l ma n “ ”The name of Pay ne or Paine is derived from Paga the nus , which was from and doubtless came into h i o f England by way of Normandy . The story this sur name is really remarkable . The original Greek word Na us y meant , a fountain and the neighborhood about a fountain gradually came to have the name applied to it . From this use it was only a step to apply the word t o the “ inhabitants of the neighborhood and cal l them Pagans -J Thus the word meaning a fountain gradua lly applied to rural things in general a nd we s e e it in one modern form “ ” n s pe asa t .

' At a time when s o large a proportion of men were _ e soldiers , and the people who were not wer largely coun “ ” tr men y , the name Pagan was applied rather con t einp t ous l y to all those w ho d id not serve their King in h i i s ti a n . C a military fashion After the era began , the “ follow”ers of Christ were always considered the sol diers of Christ and t o those not of hi s religious army the word pagan w as applied as it had been used to signify those not i n the civil a rmy z Fromthis application there ‘ ” wa s d — read into the wor , the meaning of non Christian “ ”

d . which the wor pagan bears today . In this sense it wa s a pplied widely . The early Church called the Moham “ ” med a ns Pagans and so did the Romans call those m a Norse en th t swept over Rome and her provinces . There is some question whether as a p ersonal appella ‘ tion it was fir st applied to one who reject ed C i r i s t or to c n r n one who was a ou t vma .

The Norman Paynes are general ly believed to be de scended from one or several men who at the time that R n b ollo , of Norma dy , ecame a Christian , refused to be d a nd n u baptize , were hence disti g ished from the rest of l “ “ l e l e . the followers of Ro lo , as Pagan , or Paten Whereve r the name occurs it was undoubtedly first a p l a b p ied as sou riquet like Le Sauvage and Wildman .

The names of P a ga nel and P ay ne l l are considered E n o ne by llis and others to be dimi utives of Pagan , and famous man having this form of the name , Ralph w m R P a enel a s W . e g , a headman of illia the Conqueror cent research has proven . the identity of the various forms of the name a s well a s its appearance in many h a l e s . countries . Franc its Payen , Paen and Payn Ita y has i t s Pagana and Portugal its Payana . After the Nor man conquest there were various settlements o f men bear ing the name i n England besides those present there b e h P a a nu 1 0 66 . t e s fore During Norman Dynasty , g or Payn e w a s one of the most usual names in England and on this account i s now very widely found in all the coun ties A family of Paynes settled in in the fi f t e enth century , who claim descent from the Ancient House of P ay nel l of Hambie in the arrondissement of P a nel Coutances . The change from y to Payne may well have been made to evade t h e vexatious English laws P a nel l s against aliens . Another branch of the y of Ham bi e settled in Yorks hire and in this family it appears

“ that the same individual Wa s frequently called both Pay nell and Payne .

In studying the arms of any English family it i s fr e v quently found that there i s a parent coat and that many o f - the other coats ascribed to the same name belong to offshoots of the same family with just enough difference

T . to distinguish them . his is not true of the Paynes Of the thirty - four Coats of Arms ascribed to the name in ’ Burke s Armory almost all a re entirely unlike . This points to the probability that the families are not from one pa r ent stock b ut that each h as arisen into pr omi nence s e a i at el r p y , and tends to cont adict the assertion that all the Paynes are descendants from the Norman e followers of Rollo . It seems much mor probable that

“ the several families of the name are descended from” unrelated progenitors each of whom was called “ Pagan either because he was a co untryman or because he was not a Christian .

t There are a few Coats of Arms , however , hat tie M l t e . families of the , name ogeth r In Bedford and idd e

“ ’ b e x w . s e e find families bearing Arms Gules , a fes s

There also found in another coat of arms which is borne by “ S i x a Payne fam”ily , namely Paly of or and a i s azure , a chief Ermine , and closely llied to this a “ a l v h - o r a Hereford coat P of eig t and zure , a chief

Ermine .

The arms of Payne of , Leicester , e “ d and Payne of Suffolk ar Argent , on a fes s engraile s S gules between thre e martlet able , as many mascles or , ’ al l within a bordure engrail ed of the second bezantee .

A variation of this coat is found in Norfolk . In the list of people holding land in the time of a nd after the Conquest but pre vic us to the Domesday Survey are found Paganes i n

' l st Norfolk and Pagans n . William was assi ed

r h e . - in his C onquest by seve al of t name One of his chiefs . P a a nel w a s Ralph g , previously mentioned , Sheriff of n w as . . He probably a member of the Norma family which held land at Montiers Hubert in Lieuvin. 1 086 P a a nel In Ralph g held ten lordships in , five

“ in e fift eeen i l m Som rset , n Linco n , fifteen Yorkshire and n 1 088 others in Gloucester a d . In as Sheriff of Yorkshire he seized the lands of the Bishop th e of Durham at command of William II , whose cause he a t m defended at the meeting in Nove ber , 1088 i . o He left f ur sons , William , Jordan , El as and Alan , h and from them a s descended a numerous family . In the D omesday book among those who held land directly of the King was Pagan of ; and among landholders of lesser station were men named P a a nu s S g in ussex , Berks , Buc ks , Worcester , i E a n l Cambr dge , ssex d Suffolk ; men cal ed Pagan in W a S t a f ilts , Dorset , Oxford North mpton , Leicester and o f rd ; In Nottingham land was held b y Pagan and Sas frid , men of William Peverel .

. . h e r e r Dr T O . Paine searched t c o d s of the family in the Domesday book and quoted them in his article on “ ” i n the Paines the Paine Family Records . He states that all th ose record s referred to one man ; that he had “ a son”Edmund and a daughter called daughter of l fi f Paine who also he d land . He traces this Paine in teen counties which adj oin and gives the following sketch ’ showing the position of this man s holdings in England . From the time of the Domesday book to the time of the visitations of the Heralds there i s not much in print of the records that time h a s left . These visitations were records made by the Heralds of the King during the 1 6th and early 1 7 th centuries to show the families entitl ed to n the u s e o f Coat Armor . The Heralds were first orga i z ed in 1 484 and from 1 530 to 1 686 these vi s i t a ti o ns w er e t made every twenty t o thirty years . Many of hem are now in print . In order to prove his right to arms , a man had to Sho w that they had been borne by hi s family f o r: l ea h n i hi s a at st t ree ge erat ons , and in support of cl im ,

' he filed wi th the Heralds a pedigree of his f amil y a t least n three generations in length a d oftentimes longer . Doubt less many families failed ever to be recorded and as time went on and the office of the Heralds became less impor th tant e visitations ceased .

During the time between the date . of the Domesday s n w book and the vi itatio s , ho ever , there was at least one

Payne whose name and deeds have come down to us . 1 1 1 9 a In the year , the first crus de being ended , two com y rades of Godfre de B ouillon , Hugues de Payen and Geffr o i Ad h ema n e i de Saint , bou d th mselves w th seven French Knights to guard P i l g1 ims to th e Holy S epulchre from the attack of Saracens . This research into such of the Visitations as are in print shows plainly that in many counties the families of m Payne were a ong the gentry in the sixteenth century . e Of course , there were many g ntle families not important enough to be enrolled by the Heralds and doubtless some

that failed to be included , although they were as impor tant as those whose pedigrees have survived the hand of

time .

An examination of such will ind ices as are printed

reveals a multitudinous collection of Paynes . In North ' ampton and Burland between 1 53 7 a nd 1 650 there were thirty - five wills recorded and among them a Thomas

The s ize of the Payne family shows how alm o st im possib le i t is to find the ancestry of any early emigrant of that name to this country . However , during the past year the home of Moses Paine of Braintree has been lo cated in Kent and his direct ancestry traced back to ea r v m i r a n 1463 . Another l e g t Thomas Paine of Salem i s VVr enth am and Dedham believed to have come from , h a s Suffolk , England from a family record which come down tlir ough the centuries ; but so far a s I know it h a s never been verified in England . The descendants of

a a e -h Thom s Paine of E asth m , whil they regret that not ing h a s yet been found pertaining to hi s birthplace or ' w a s ancestry , can still assure themselves that he doubt less of good blood in England ; His education and his career in this country all go to show that h e must have had advantages superior to most of the men with whom h f un i n he was associated in t e o d g of Eastham .

The fact that the name of the emigrant ancestor of the Paynes of Hamilton spelled his name Paine has no

Significance . In the Sixteenth and seventeenth centuries men spelled their surnames as suite d their individual tastes . Brothers often spelled their surname differently . a d s New of Eastham , S n isfield , Mas , and York
