May is also a time to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many parishes schedule May crownings or special times to recite the rosary as we fittingly associate this lovely time of year with the beauty and grace of God’s mother, Mary.

Second Place Rhode Island Catholic, “Festivals” by Richard Lafond This submission's email message is clear, readable and obviously target to the stated audience. The pre-section ads are clean and clear, too. Revenue is not that high, but the sample indicates that the intended audience responded to this prompt. Good work. Dear President Trump and Members of Congress, As religious leaders from a variety of backgrounds, we are called by our sacred texts and faith traditions to love our neighbor, accompany the vulnerable, and welcome the sojourner. War, conflict and persecution have forced people to leave their homes, creating more refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people than at any other time in history. More than 65 million people are currently displaced – the largest number in recorded history. This nation has an urgent moral responsibility to receive refugees and asylum seekers who are in dire need of safety. Today, with more than five million Syrian refugees fleeing violence and persecution and hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties, the United States has an ethical obligation as a world leader to reduce this suffering and generously welcome Syrian refugees into our country. We call on the Trump Administration and all members of the U.S. Congress to demonstrate moral leadership and affirm their support for the resettlement of refugees from all over the world to the United States. This nation has a rich history as a leader in refugee resettlement, with significant precedent, including after World War II and after the fall of Saigon, when we resettled hundreds of thousands of refugees. It is important to recognize that the United States has the most rigorous refugee screening process in the world, involving the Department of Defense, Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and National Counter Terrorism Center. The process includes biometric checks, medical screenings, forensic testing of documents, DNA testing for family reunification cases, and in-person interviews with highly trained homeland security officials.

Archdiocese of Baltimore will use this moment in history to combat racism Sherita Thomas and her husband were watching news reports during this tempestuous time when one of her daughters saw a TV headline and asked, “Are we safe?” After Thomas and her husband spoke with her about justice and racism, the daughter asked her, “What are you going to do?” One of the things that Thomas will do is take on the role of interim director for the Office of Black Catholic Ministries for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. She will retain her job as global associate engagement manager at T. Rowe Price, where her experience includes key roles with the T. Rowe Price Foundation, Diversity and Inclusion, and Global Client and Investment departments. Thomas said her children were one of the reasons she accepted the appointment to the Office of Black Catholics from Archbishop William E. Lori. “I realized that I could and should do more,” she told the Catholic Review via email. “From the time I was a youth, I worked behind the scenes to create a community where people of color could feel they rightfully belonged. “I worked with the Office of Black Catholics during my teen years and later volunteered as a young adult. Given my daughter’s response, I knew at such a critical time as this it was time for me to step up and use my gifts in service of the church,” she said. Thomas grew up in St. Edward Parish, now worships at New All Saints in Liberty Heights and recently served as president of the Home School Association at St.

The Formative Years of the Polish Seminary in the United States, Joseph Swastek, Orchard Lake, MI, 1985, 127 p. FOREWORD The Centennial Year of the Orchard Lake Schools will be remembered for the appearance of a few publications which will give readers a sense of the history of those unique institutions that have served the Polonia on American soil since 1885. Conscious of the indefatigable work and zeal of our beloved founder, Father Joseph Dąbrowski, the Orchard Lake Schools are proud to reprint this study of their origins by Father Joseph Swastek. The Formative Years of the Polish Seminary in the United States will be, I believe, well and widely read by the thousands of alumni of the Schools as well as by those who believe that the present is always rooted in some fashion in the past. When Rev. Joseph Swastek published the history of the early years of the Polish Semi- nary in 1959, the formal recovery of Polish American history had barely begun. Scholars in other disciplines had taken the lead in the study of Polish immigrants and their children. So- ciologists had been using them as models of social change at least since the time of William I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki in 1918. Concerned about intercultural misunderstanding and conflict, social workers like Emily Greene Balch began to interpret the great Polish migration for an American audience even earlier in the century. Professional historians took longer to come to grips with Polish immigration. Aside from the pioneer Mieczysław Haiman, the members of the Polish American Historical Associa- tion, and a few others, they ignored the subject until the 1950s.

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Bands of Brothers: The Negotiation of Identity in the Congregation of the Mission’s Polish Vice-Province in the United States, 1903—1975. A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the Department of History School of Arts and Sciences Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy By Charles R. Kaczy ński Washington, D.C. 2010 Bands of Brothers: The Negotiation of Identity in the Congregation of the Mission’s Polish Vice-Province in the United States, 1903—1975. Charles R. Kaczy ński Director: Leslie Tentler, Ph.D. The historical literature on late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Polish Catholic immigration to the United States includes numerous studies of conflicts between the immigrant laity and members of the Catholic clergy, both Polish- and American-born. While scholars have closely studied the laity’s motivations and the conflicts’ outcomes, little attention has been given to the Polish immigrant clergy who came to the United States to minister to the spiritual needs of the laity and their perspective on these tensions. This dissertation fills a gap in this historical literature by examining the history of the Polish Vice-Province in the United States of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian Fathers) from the first Polish Missionaries’ arrival in 1903 to the reconstitution of the Polish Vice-Province as the autonomous New England Province in 1975. Drawing on theoretical frameworks developed by T. H. Breen and Benedict Anderson, this dissertation analyzes the role that competing ethnic and clerical identities played in the Polish Vice-Province’s ability to resolve conflicts with its Mother Province in Poland and the Eastern Province of the United States as well as with Polish secular priests serving in Catholic dioceses throughout the eastern half of the United States.
