SHERRICK A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Journalism and Creative Media in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2019 Copyright Jue Hou 2019 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT In the 21st Century, eSport has gradually come into public sight as a new form of competitive spectator event. This type of modern competitive video gaming resembles the field of traditional sport in multiple ways, including players, leagues, tournaments and corporate sponsorship, etc. Nevertheless, academic discussion regarding the current treatment, benefit, and risk of eSport are still ongoing. This research project examined the status quo of the rising eSport field. Based on a detailed introduction of competitive video gaming history as well as an in-depth analysis of factors that constitute a sport, this study redefined eSport as a unique form of video game competition. From the theoretical perspective of uses and gratifications, this project focused on how eSport is similar to, or different from, traditional sports in terms of spectator motivations. The current study incorporated a number of previously validated-scales in sport literature and generated two surveys, and got 536 and 530 respondents respectively. This study then utilized the data and constructed the motivation scale for eSport spectatorship consumption (MSESC) through structural equation modeling. -

The choice of heroes, additionally known as select or draft, takes place earlier to the match and alternates among the two teams till each participant has selected one hero. Heroes are designed with one of a kind strengths and weaknesses to promote group cooperation in a sport. Intuitively, heroes in a sturdy group need to supplement each different strength’s and suppress those of combatants. Hero drafting is therefore a tough hassle due to the complicated hero-to-hero relationships to consider. In this paper, we recommend a singular hero recommendation device that indicates heroes to add to a present group at the same time as maximizing the crew’s prospect for victory. For exploits the shortcomings and decreases the strengths of that case, we represent the drafting among teams as a the heroes chosen by the opposing team. Assuming equally combinatorial sport. Deconstructing Fame
Deconstructing Fame An Analysis of eSports Brand Value. The Case of Dota 2 Master Thesis (15 cr.) Department of Informatics and Media Media and Communication Studies Ilya Musabirov May 2016 Abstract This work is dedicated to studying pricing and valuation mechanisms of eSports brands in free-to-play game Dota 2. The object of the study are virtual autographs of Dota 2 professional players, which are traded on the market but, at the same time, do not provide buyers with any functional advantage in the game. The principal aim of the study is to reveal factors influencing the value of autographs and understand how the community of players evaluate them. Theoretical framework of current study borrows from economical sociology, in particular, ap- proach of Patrik Aspers who argues that standard and status markets have distinct forms of goods’ evaluation. Special attention in this work is focused on conception of status market on which there is no unified quality scale for evaluation, and all quality judgements are deeply entangled with market actors. Kornberger’s treatment of brands as ‘organising devices’ sup- plements the framework and supports the focus on devices of brands’ value construction. Mixed research strategy, combining qualitative, and quantitative methods is used to make sense of the data extracted from Steam community market and discussion from networking service Reddit. Results show that among the most influential factors explaining the price of autograph there are personal player performance statistics, team tournament performance, and media cover- age of player’s performance. The more detailed analysis of discussions on Reddit illustrates how evaluation devices are performed by the community of players and spectators.
