Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we celebrate the feast of St. Lorenzo Ruiz, the first canonized Filipino saint, a layman who bore witness to his faith during a painful martyrdom. He is an example for all lay people. Remaining true to one’s Catholic faith is not easy these days. The culture around us pulls us in many directions. The fidelity of St. Lorenzo Ruiz can inspire us to keep the faith in the midst of opposition and even persecution. Fr. Paul Schmidt I am grateful to the St. Lorenzo Ruiz Society of our parish for planning and carrying

out this weekend’s commemorative Mass, , and festival. We welcome back Father

Gus Acob as principal concelebrant and homilist at 12:30 Mass.

A recent article by Brooks, reprinted from the New York Times in our local

newspaper, highlights the difficulty of keeping the faith today. The article quotes a survey of in-depth interviews with 230 young adults from across the , which is part of a larger survey. The interviews concerned moral decisions.

The interviewers found that the young people interviewed often could not accurately

describe moral issues. They had not learned a vocabulary that would enable them to do so.

“The default position, which most of them came back to again and again, is that moral

choices are just a matter of individual taste. ‘It’s personal,’ the respondents typically said.

Morality is ‘It’s up to the individual. Who am I to say?’”

The young people reject blind obedience to authority, but have no rule other than

Revealed, their feelings to guide them. “As one put it, ‘I mean, I guess what makes something right is

how I feel about it. But different people feel different ways, so I couldn’t speak on behalf of

anyone else as to what’s right and wrong.’” According to this form of moral decision-

Inherited & making, Hitler would have been justified, because he “felt good” about murdering 6 million Jews! The survey “found an atmosphere of extreme moral individualism – or relativism and Shared nonjudgmentalism…” They have not been given the resources – by schools, institutions and families – to cultivate their moral intuitions.” The article concludes: “In most times and in most places, the group was seen to be the essential moral unit. A shared religion defined rules and practices. Cultures structured people’s imaginations and imposed moral disciplines. But now more people are led to assume that the free-floating individual is the essential moral unit. Morality was once revealed, inherited and shared, but now it’s thought of as something that emerges in the privacy of your own heart.” Catholics do believe that our conscience must be our guide. But that conscience must be rightly formed. It must make judgments based on reason, revelation, custom, law, and culture. We are not left on our own to make up the moral law. These judgments are not always easy to make. Sometimes good people disagree. Guidance is needed. We cannot ignore the wisdom of the ages and the teaching of the Church. St. Lorenzo Ruiz was a man formed by his culture and his faith. He had internalized the teachings of his religion, so that they were imbedded in his conscience. That is why he did not give up his faith when threatened with suffering and death. We need to form our youth in the same kind of convictions, if we hope to have them resist the opposition of the hostile world around us. If we do not do this, we are leaving them to drift without guidance and dooming them and our civilization to disaster. May St. Lorenzo Ruiz pray for us, that we may not sell our youth short.

Your Pastor, Father Paul Schmidt
