Summer 2014

SPCA Saves Dachshund in Distress A couple of months ago, we received a call from an emergency clinic regarding a female dog struggling to give birth to her puppies. She had already been in labor for 24 hours. Unfortunately, the owner was unwilling or unable to pay the emergency clinic for the medical care required, and thus surrendered the dog. The emergency clinic then asked the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA to step in to help the dog, a beautiful black and tan Dachshund now named .

When the clinic staff first saw Sadie, they knew she was in serious medical trouble and that they needed to act fast. She was not only fighting for her own life, but also for those of her unborn puppies. Upon examination it was discovered she had a very large puppy stuck in her birth canal, causing her to have an extensive and painful labor. She was unable to give birth naturally. SPCA Medical Director Dr. Scheller and our clinic staff immediately prepared Sadie for a caesarean section (“C-section”). Sadie was touch-and- go, but the clinic staff was not only able to save Sadie, but also two of her puppies. After the operation, Sadie was made comfortable, kept warm, and put on IV fluids and antibiotics that were not only safe for Sadie, but also safe for her nursing puppies. Shortly after the surgery, Sadie was reunited with her two puppies; they immediately took to their mama and began to suckle. The happy new family was then taken in by an experienced SPCA foster home to recover and give the puppies time and space to grow.

It’s rare that our SPCA performs C-sections. In fact, on average, the SPCA veterinary clinic only performs about one a year, but Sadie was in dire need. Without the C-section, and the determination and skill of our clinic personnel, she and her puppies would not have survived. Aiding the clinic staff in doing their job was our new “Multiparameter Monitor,”including the Capnograph recently purchased with support from the Perrigo Foundation. When hooked up to a patient, the monitor measures blood pressure, percentage of oxygenation in the blood and body temperature, and performs an EKG, which monitors the electrical activity in the patient. Because the stress of the labor on Sadie’s little Dachshund body was so significant, monitoring her vital signs was absolutely, well, vital! SPCA patients, whether in labor or severely injured or critically ill, will now benefit from this piece of lifesaving equipment.

One of our goals at the SPCA is to replace outdated and less reliable medical equipment as well as adding new technology essential to our lifesaving work. Because medical equipment is quite costly, we have a long way to go. Please consider making a donation to help us upgrade our clinic so we can continue to save the lives of pets like Sadie and her pups. Love is free, but medical costs add up!

Today Sadie and her puppies are in their new homes! The puppies are thriving and growing like puppies do with their new families. And Sadie is happy and living the good life with her three new canine brothers and her new Mom and Dad.

Sadie now lives with the Crutchfield pack joining two Dachshunds previously adopted from the SPCA, and a hound mix.

SPCA Pet Therapy Program Brings Joy The giggle of a child as she confidently reads with her new friend, one hand holding the book and the other stroking soft fur. The glimmer of joy and the twinkle in an eye as residents at a nursing home feel a cold nose nuzzle into their hand. Therapy animals have the ability to create magical moments and leave paw prints on the souls of those they touch.

There is a need in our community for therapy animals. Local libraries, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and assisted living facilities are ecstatic about the prospect of having cats and dogs, and hopefully even rabbits and guinea pigs, visit their residents. These animals and their handlers are certain to bring immeasurable joy to hundreds. Board of Directors Rhonda Quagliana The SPCA recently started a pet therapy program where President owners can learn more about certifying their pet, get Jay Kessler Vice President information about facilities in need of pet therapy visits, and attend monthly informational meetings. Meetings are a Bill Daggett Treasurer great way to meet other pet therapy teams, get new pointers for visits, and ask questions. Meeting topics are designed to Lisa Ross Moorefield Secretary help new handlers gain insight and education about types of Mary Chinn visits and the things that they might encounter on visits, and for seasoned handlers to learn about new opportunities and Becky Craig share experiences. Upcoming meeting topics include Scheline T. Crutchfield “Keeping Your Animal Physically and Emotionally Safe” by Ethel deNeveu Dr. Kristen Scheller, and “Recognizing Stress Signals in Your Animal” by Deven Gaston. For a full list of monthly pet therapy visits, check the SPCA events calendar online at Amy Gardner caspca.org. Ginger P. Germani Angie Gunter The SPCA Pet Therapy Program and all monthly meetings are open to anyone who wishes Barbara Millar to join – certified teams, non-certified teams/teams in training, and people currently without animals are all encouraged to join. For teams wishing to become certified, a Preston Morris Pet Therapy Class is recommended, followed by a Pet Therapy Test. Nearly 400 walkers and their dogs turned out for this 1st year event, raising more than $50,000 for the animals at the SPCA. Dogs and their people gathered in Lee Park before and after the walk along Charlottesville’s historic downtown, enjoying give- a-ways from generous animal-loving sponsors, live music, puppy pedicures, doggie ice cream and more. The walk was led by our Top Dog Fundraisers team “Beth’s Foster Families” who raised more than $5,000 for homeless pets!

We would like to thank all of our sponsors, fundraisers and the hundreds of people and pets who turned out to make the day a ton of fun and a big win for animals in need.
