BUILDING COLD WAR WARRIORS: SOCIALIZATION OF THE FINAL COLD WAR GENERATION Steven Robert Bellavia A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Andrew M. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

  • Taro As the Symbol of Postcolonial Hawaiian Identity ______
Growing resistance: Taro as the symbol of postcolonial Hawaiian identity __________ A thesis presented to the faculty of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Canterbury __________ In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts __________ by Charles Pipes February 2020 ii iii Abstract Taro is a root vegetable that has held important dietary, spiritual, and social roles with Native Hawaiian culture for centuries. The cultivation and management of the taro plant was a significant foundation of ancient Hawaiian society. Following the 19th century Western colonization of Hawaii, and the ensuing degradation of the indigenous culture, taro cultivation went into a steep decline as a result of land alienation, commercialization, and resources being designated for alternative, non- native crops. In the years following annexation by the United States, there was a growing Hawaiian identity and sovereignty movement. This thesis examines how taro became a potent symbol of that movement and Indigenous Hawaiian resistance to Western hegemony. The thesis will examine taro’s role as a symbol of resistance by analyzing the plant’s traditional uses and cultivation methods, as well as the manner in which Hawaiian taro was displaced by colonial influence. This resistance, modeled after the Civil Rights Movement and American Indian Movement in the United States, used environmental, spiritual, and cosmological themes to illustrate the Hawaiian movement’s objectives. Taro cultivation, encapsulating nearly every aspect of traditional Hawaiian society and environment, became a subtle form of nonviolent protest. To examine taro farming from this perspective, the plant’s socioeconomic, spiritual, and biological aspects will be explored.

  • TOP GUN (1986) and the Emergence of the Post-Cinematic by MICHAEL LOREN SIEGEL
5.4 Ride into the Danger Zone: TOP GUN (1986) and the Emergence of the Post-Cinematic BY MICHAEL LOREN SIEGEL Introduction The work of British-born filmmaker Tony Scott has undergone a major critical revision in the last few years. While Scott’s tragic suicide in 2012 certainly drew renewed vigor to this reassessment, it was well underway long before his death. Already by the mid-2000s, Scott’s brash, unapologetically superficial, and yet undeniably visionary films had been appropriated by auteurists and film theorists alike to support a wide range of arguments.[1] Regardless of what we may think of the idea of using auteurism and theory to “rescue” directors who were for decades considered little more than action hacks—an especially meaningful question in the digital age, given the extent to which auteur theory’s acceptance has increased in direct proportion to the growth of online, theoretically informed film criticism—it would be difficult to deny the visual, aural, narrative, thematic, and energetic consistency of Scott’s films, from his first effort, The Hunger (1983), all the way through to his last, Unstoppable (2011). The extreme scale and artistic ambition of his films, the intensity of their aesthetic and affective engagement with Ride into the Danger Zone the present (a present defined, as they constantly remind us, by machines, mass media, masculinity, and militarization), and, indeed, the consistency of their audiovisual design and affect (their bristling, painterly flatness, the exaggerated sense of perpetual transformation and becoming that is conveyed by their soundtracks and montage, the hyperbolic and damaged masculinity of their protagonists)—all of this would have eventually provoked the kind of critical reassessment we are seeing today, even without the new mythos produced around Scott upon his death.

Michael O’Keefe of ‘Caddyshack’ Fame Returns to the Stage in New Off-Broadway Play Nearly four decades after ‘Caddyshack,’ the New York actor reflects on the comedy and his new role in ‘First Love’ Actor Michael O'Keefe at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York on June 12. The veteran actor, who starred in ‘Caddyshack’ and was nominated for an Oscar for his work in ‘The Great Santini,’ is now in a new off- Broadway play, ‘First Love.’ PHOTO: KEVIN HAGEN FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL By Charles Passy Updated June 20, 2018 1:12 p.m. ET Michael O’Keefe may forever be identified with the role of Danny Noonan, the young caddie in “Caddyshack.” But in the nearly four decades since the release of the goofball comedy that starred Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield, the actor has built a solid career that makes the part seem more like a pause on the green. Mr. O’Keefe, 63, has worked in dozens of films, playing alongside everyone from Jack Nicholson in “Ironweed” to George Clooney in “Michael Clayton.” He has been on the small screen as well—as a regular on the original “Roseanne” and, more recently, on series ranging from “Homeland” to “Masters of Sex.” But the actor, who was raised outside New York City and now calls upstate New York home, has also found a place for himself in the theater, with several appearances on Broadway. He is returning to the stage for a new work, “First Love,” by veteran playwright Charles Mee —or “Chuck,” as Mr.
