INTRODUCTION: BLUE NOTES TOWARD A NEW JAZZ DISCOURSE MARK OSTEEN, LOYOLA COLLEGE I. Authority and Authenticity in Jazz Historiography Most books and articles with "jazz" in the title are not simply about music. Instead, their authors generally use jazz music to investigate or promulgate ideas about politics or race (e.g., that jazz exemplifies democratic or American values,* or that jazz epitomizes the history of twentieth-century African Americans); to illustrate a philosophy of art (either a Modernist one or a Romantic one); or to celebrate the music as an expression of broader human traits such as conversa- tion, flexibility, and hybridity (here "improvisation" is generally the touchstone). These explorations of the broader cultural meanings of jazz constitute what is being touted as the New Jazz Studies. This proliferation of the meanings of "jazz" is not a bad thing, and in any case it is probably inevitable, for jazz has been employed as an emblem of every- thing but mere music almost since its inception. As Lawrence Levine demon- strates, in its formative years jazz—with its vitality, its sexual charge, its use of new technologies of reproduction, its sheer noisiness—was for many Americans a symbol of modernity itself (433). It was scandalous, lowdown, classless, obscene, but it was also joyous, irrepressible, and unpretentious. The music was a battlefield on which the forces seeking to preserve European high culture met the upstarts of popular culture who celebrated innovation, speed, and novelty. It 'Crouch writes: "the demands on and respect for the individual in the jazz band put democracy into aesthetic action" (161). -

THE CHRONICLE ROSEBUD RETIREMENT VILLAGE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 One for all you girls in the Village Clint Eastwood in 1962 about the time he was playing Rowdy Yates in Rawhide Message from Deb – July 2018 It was with much pleasure that we welcomed two new Residents to our Village in June. We send a very warm welcome to Eleanor Ashton and Margot O’Rourke. We do hope you settle in quickly to your new home and the Village and enjoy the variety of activities available. Residents will have noticed quite a bit of activity in the Village. Apologies if this is causing any inconvenience and at times deterring from the look of the Village. However, with various tradesmen, concrete trucks, deliveries and skips at least we can prove that the Village is on the improve. Currently there is various work being undertaken on seven Units, with another four scheduled to follow. I think this is a very exciting time and the Units are looking fabulous on completion. The building team is very efficient and cohesive and their work is of a high standard. They are also very obliging and helpful to deal with. The Resident Forum agreed to make changes to the garden entrance of the Village. I will be meeting with a representative from Wise Employment to have a Work for the Dole worker to assist with gardening works. A worker will be available for 25 hours a week over six months, with Eric Lee supervising the worker. My priorities are the entrance, the rockery, the lake area and a garden in Floral Court. -

About the Program On today’s concert, our recitalists present a distinctly modern program spanning three languages, two hemispheres, and multiple genres, yet what differences we find in language and musical idiom are bridged by time: every compos- er featured in this recital lived and composed in the twentieth century. While the Strauss and Tosti selections were both written in the waning years of the nineteenth century, both composers bridged the gap between the two centu- ries, ushering in a new era of composition. -

For the Love of Gulf Branch: Arlington's Hidden Symbol of Smart Growth BY CHARLES s. CLARK What The Devil Is AN ature Center? That was the prevailing view in Arlington of the early 1960s, according to proto-environmentalist and county board alumnae Dorothy Grotos, recalling her leading role in creation of the Gulf Branch Nature Center. Half a century later, the question is answered by the center's 16,600 annual visitors to the leafy Military Road site, its popular dugout canoe, its live "Ms. Owl" and its busy observational beehive. Not to mention the center's meditative tree arbors, hiking trails and active blacksmith shed. Toss in its status as an away-from-the-neon monument to smart growth and the past presence of a Hollywood legend, and Arlingtonians have a retreat and education site that commands a ferocious army of protectors. Current park naturalist Jennifer Soles, who has frequented Gulf Branch since 1980, has watched the center grow to offer 290 programs for school chil dren and the public in 2015, its quarterly events calendar ballooning from 1 page to 14, including those at the cross-town Long Branch Nature Center, she says. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Gulf Branch's opening on June 12, 1966, an array of exhibits, a symposium and an outdoor party was staged by center staff, the Arlington Central Library and the nonprofit Friends of the Gulf Branch Nature Center. Among the impresarios was Duke Banks, the Friends' vice president and parks activist who has been taking his family to Gulf Branch since they "fell in love" with the idyll at a Christmas event in 1985. -

But questions of its origins still linger. As such, BEAR FAMILY RECORDS now submits 'Wild Boy: The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez' as fresh evidence in the quest for answers. Over the past twenty years Ahbez has gone from cult figure to harbinger of the Sixties flower-power movement. This notion is born out largely by his 1948 ant- hem of universal love, Nature Boy, and his rare solo album from 1960, titled 'Eden's Island' – one of popular music's earliest con- cept albums. 'Wild Boy: The Lost Songs Of Eden Ahbez' both expands the Ahbez catalog and deepens the notion of a psychedelic movement having roots in the 1950s. Side one acts as a compilation of music that Ahbez wrote in the aftermath of Nature Boy. Inclusion of songs like Palm Springs by the Ray Anthony Orchestra and Hey Jacque by Eartha Kitt give listeners the chance to hear obscure cuts by big-name artists in the context of Ahbez for the first time. -

Redefining the The Clarice Smith Performing coming of age story for the electronic age, the evening-length piece follows a gay African Arts Center at the University American teen as he negotiates a difficult adolescence. Stardust follows this urban, of Maryland distraught, yet relentlessly hopeful protagonist as he searches for the meaning of love and compassion in a life that seems bereft of both. Ethel Smyth: A Life of Music and Activism As musician Sir Thomas Beecham, friend to Ethel Smyth, walked into the prison yard at Holloway Prison to visit her, he came upon the scene of dozens of suffragettes marching and singing their war-chant, its opening cry: Shout, shout, up with your song! Cry with the wind, for the dawn is breaking; March, march, swing you along, Wide blows our banner, and hope is waking. Ethel Smyth stood in her jail cell, the voices of the women rising up to her. They were singing her song, The March of the Women (words by Cicely Hamilton), composed a year earlier in 1911 as the anthem for the Women's Social and Political Union. Inspired, she stretched her arms out beyond the window bars and, in the Portrait of Ethel Smyth, 1901, words of Sir Beecham, ". beaming approbation from an overlooking upper by John Singer Sargent window, beat time in almost Bacchic frenzy with a toothbrush." The preceding anecdote illustrates the quintessential Ethel Smyth. The feisty, at times radical, activist fought not only for voting rights for women, but also for the equality of women musicians in the male-dominated milieu that was, and is, classical music. (In today's top 20 U.S. major orchestras in 2014, 91% of conductors/music directors and 63% of musicians were male, with men holding 69% of the [higher-paying] principal positions, and 82% of the concertmaster positions while only comprising 41% of all violinists. [1] Of the compositions performed by the top 21 orchestras in the 2014 – 2015 orchestral season, only 1.8% overall were composed by women, with 14.8% of living composers' compositions being by women. -

Mozart was considered a child prodigy. He could read and write music by the age of five and was composing by the age of six. In 1781, Mozart moved to Vienna to become a freelance musician, which was uncommon during this time. Most composers worked for aristocratic patrons during the Classical period, since the rise of amateur musicians who were frequent music-buyers didn’t occur until the late-Classical period into the early-Romantic period. Despite being relatively famous, Mozart struggled with a spending addiction which left his wife and children poor upon his death at thirty-five years old. “Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio” is sung in Le nozze di Figaro by a prepubescent boy, Cherubino, to the maid Susanna discussing his conflict of emotions about women.
