Diplomacy est un jeu de négociation à 7 joueurs où chacun des joueurs essaie de conquérir la majorité des centres d’approvisionnement d’Europe au début du 20e siècle. L’article présente, en premier lieu, un ensemble de données contenant plus de 150 000 jeux joués par des humains. Cet ensemble de données a été compilé suite à la signature d’un partenariat avec un site externe. Les jeux, qui ont été joués sur cette plateforme, ont tous été convertis dans un nouveau format standardizé et ont ensuite été rejoués pour s’assurer de leur qualité. L’article présente aussi un engin de jeu, avec une interface web, permettant à des humains de jouer contre les modèles qui ont été développés. De plus, l’article présente un modèle d’apprentissage supervisé où l’agent apprend à reproduire le comportement de tous les joueurs dans l’ensemble de données par maximum de vraisemblance. Un agent qui apprend à jouer par renforcement (en jouant contre lui-même) a aussi été entraîné. L’article se conclut en faisant une analyse de ces modèles et en comparant la performance des agents contre des agents utilisant des règles complexes. Mot-clés: Diplomacy, négociation, jeu, apprentissage supervisé, apprentissage par ren- forcement, apprentissage profond v Summary This thesis presents an article on an agent which can play the "No-Press" version (without messages) of the Diplomacy board game. Diplomacy is a 7-player negotiation game where each player tries to conquer the majority of the supply centers in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. The article first presents a novel dataset of more than 150 000 human games. This dataset was compiled following the signing of a partnership with an external site. The games, which were played on this platform, were all converted into a new standardized format and then replayed to ensure their quality. The article also presents a game en- gine, with a web interface, allowing humans to play against the models that have been trained. Moreover, the article presents a supervised learning model where an agent learns to reproduce the behavior of all players in the dataset by maximum likelihood. An agent that learns by reinforcement (by playing games against itself) has also been trained. The article concludes by doing an analysis of these models and comparing their performance against complex rule-based agents. Calhamer. Seven powers, namely Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Turkey, try to conquer a majority of the supply centers of Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. Diplomacy is an interesting domain for artificial intelligence for several reasons: • Large action space. There can be up to 34 units on the board (one for each supply center), with each unit having an average of 26 possible actions, giving an average branching factor of 1:29 ∗ 1048. Compared to Go (branching factor of 200 [5]), or chess (branching factor of 35 [5]), Diplomacy is several orders of magnitude more complex, making techniques such as search and rollout much more difficult to implement. • No randomness. As opposed to games like Risk [21] (which uses dice) or Hanabi [3] (which uses shuffled cards), Diplomacy has no elements of randomness and is purely a skills game. • Negotiation. Players want to act in their best interests, yet to win the game, they must also negotiate and cooperate with other players. Negotiation can be done either explicitly through messages, or implicitly through the orders that players submit simultaneously. Alliances between players are usually short-lived and betrayal and deception is common. 1 • Language emergence and grounding. Diplomacy can be an interesting testbed for language emergence. For instance, are agents able to create a new language among themselves to play better than agents that are not able to communicate? Moreover, the conversations need to be grounded in the game context, otherwise the players will not be able to understand each other. • Imperfect and incomplete information. Orders are submitted by all players simultaneously, therefore players are not aware of what other players will do when deciding what orders to play. Moreover, messages exchanged between players are private, and can only be seen by its sender and recipient. Finally, the players’ strategy are not fully known and may

Kenzer, Thesis Director This thesis descnbes the first fifty years of the creation of Virginia Beach as a seaside resort. It demonstrates the importance of railroads in promoting the resort and suggests that Virginia Beach followed a similar developmental pattern to that of other ocean resorts, particularly those ofthe famous New Jersey shore. Virginia Beach, plagued by infrastructure deficiencies and overshadowed by nearby Ocean View, did not stabilize until its promoters shifted their attention from wealthy northerners to Tidewater area residents. After experiencing difficulties exacerbated by the Panic of 1893, the burning of its premier hotel in 1907, and the hesitation bred by the Spanish American War and World War I, Virginia Beach enjoyed robust growth during the 1920s. While Virginia Beach is often perceived as a post- World War II community, this thesis argues that its prewar foundation was critical to its subsequent rise to become the largest city in Virginia.

Yet the underly- ing mechanics of RuneQuest are flexible enough to represent any genre. Of course a Game Master needs to invest a little more work if planning to run a game in an atypical setting. Whilst the Design Mechanism intends to publish some more modern setting books in the future, this article is the first of an informal series to show just how easy it is to make your own conversions (commonly known as ‘hacks’) to play in the more infamous Sci-Fi and Fantasy worlds. To start the ball rolling we’ll show how you can use RQ6 to run a Star Wars based game, which is about as far removed from S&S as can be imagined.

    UNCLASSIFIED//FOUO 28 February 2010 OpenSourceCenter Media Aid Kremlin Allies' Expanding Control of Runet Provokes Only Limited Opposition Pro-Kremlin oligarchs have gradually acquired significant stakes in the most popular websites in Russia, apparently seeking profitable investments, while augmenting other government moves to establish control over the Russian Internet. While specific population segments are intensely alarmed about Internet censorship and take steps to expose or thwart government efforts, the majority of the public is unconcerned about freedom of the press or Internet and is unlikely to oppose censorship of the Internet. With the government closely controlling TV and much of the press, the Internet has been the main venue for expression of opposition views, and social networking sites, which have become extremely popular, have developed outside government control. Television remains the leading and most popular source of information in Russia and the Russian Government maintains tight control of it for this reason, with the most popular channels being owned by the state or progovernment oligarchs. However, social networking sites have grown dramatically in popularity in recent years and are now the most popular websites in the Russian Internet. Sites such as VKontakte, a Facebook clone, Odnoklassniki, a Classmates.com clone, and LiveJournal, a blogging platform, now attract a monthly audience of many millions of users each. The Kremlin has taken notice of the increasing significance of the Internet and social media sites in particular and has begun enacting laws and policies aimed at giving it greater control. Kremlin-friendly oligarchs, who may also be motivated by the profitability of these sites, have also begun investing heavily into the top social networking and Internet outlets, potentially creating a situation similar to that of the national television networks.
