Conclusion: Convergent Paths In November 1945, the President of the Republic of Vietnam, Hồ Chí Minh, sent a letter addressed to ‘the President of the Republic of Indonesia’, proposing that a joint declaration of solidarity to be made by Indonesia and Vietnam in the form of a ‘Preparatory Commission Struggling for a Federation of the Free Peoples of Southern Asia’. The letter, entrusted to an American journalist named Harold Isaacs, did not reach President Soekarno.1 It was handed to Vice-President Mohammad Hatta, who then passed it on to Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir. Sjahrir discussed the offer with Soedjatmoko Koko, the interpreter to foreign correspon- dents of the Republican government, but told him that he would not reply and preferred just to ignore the letter. Sjahrir indifference sprang from his conviction that the situation in Indonesia and Vietnam were very different. The Indonesian nationalists were up against the Dutch, who were ‘a weak colonial power and could be defeated quickly.’ Hồ Chí Minh had to contend with the French, who could and would resist him for a long time. Furthermore, he looked askance at the fact that the DRV government depended on support from the communists, which was not the case in Indonesia. In conclusion, Sjahrir argued, ‘If we ally ourselves with Hồ Chí Minh, we shall weaken ourselves and delay Independence.’2 The story of the missed opportunity for cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia3 as a result of Sjahrir’s ‘betrayal of the greater Asian revolution’,as 1Harold Robert Isaacs is the author of No Peace for Asia, which has been cited widely in this dissertation. -

McMurray This research explores the experience of the growing number of students from Eastern Indonesia who attend universities on Java. It asks key questions about the challenges these often maligned students face as ethnic, linguistic, and religious minorities exposed to the dominant culture of their republic during their years of education. Through interviews and observations conducted in Malang, Java, emergent themes about this group show their resilience and optimism despite discrimination by their Javanese hosts. Poppy was studying at the London School, England and Sjahrir in Jakarta, the two then flew to Cairo and married there, witnessed by Soedjatmoko, a child of revolution, which is also a leading intelligentsia and political cadre of Sjahrir. Apparently, the First Prime Minister of the Republic of Indonesia, Sutan Sjahrir had a speck of history in the Middle East during the war of independence 1945-1949, which makes its way to Egypt to meet with the Arab leaders, fighters, intellectuals, activists and warriors. Sjahrir even met Hassan al-Bana, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood persistent against colonialism and imperialism in the Muslim world, especially the Middle East. Sjahrir asked the Arab world to mobilize supports for the independence of Indonesia. Integral-Universal Education: Analysis of M. Natsir’s Thoughts on Islamic Education Kasmuri Selamat Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sultan Syarif Kasim, Riau, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract. This paper aimed at exploring M. Natsir's thoughts on Islamic education. Using a qualitative study with a historical approach, the writer found that M. Natsir was a rare figure. He was not only a scholar but also a thinker, a politician, and an educator. As an educator, he not only became a teacher, but also gave birth to various educational concepts known as an integral and universal education concept. He was an architect and an anti-dichotomous thinker of Islamic education. According to Natsir, Islam did not separate spiritual matters from worldly affairs. The spiritual aspect would be the basis of worldliness. The foregoing indicated that religious ethics emphasized by Islamic teachings must be the foundation of life. The conceptual basis of "educational modernism" with tauhid as its foundation demonstrated that he was a figure who really cared about Islamic education. Keywords: Integral-Universal Education, M. Historically, the Minangkabau migrants have coexisted peacefully with local communities in which they settle, and there is no record of conflict between the Minangkabau migrants and local inhabitants. This study attempted to determine the values espoused by this nomadic community. The study was grounded in literature study approach of philosophical hermeneutics and utilized methodical elements, such as description, induction deduction, synthesis analysis, and heuristics. The study also applied observation, and interviews with the Minangkabau migrants. The findings revealed that the culture of this ethnic group explicitly encourages young people to venture abroad. The ethical values that form the basis of the outmigration’s of the Minangkabau community are affirmed by the adat (local) proverbs that prescribe strong work ethics, mutual respect, and an understanding of the local culture to which they outmigrate. Another Look at the Jakarta Charter Controversy of 1945 R. E. Elson* On the morning of August 18, 1945, three days after the Japanese surrender and just a day after Indonesia's proclamation of independence, Mohammad Hatta, soon to be elected as vice-president of the infant republic, prevailed upon delegates at the first meeting of the Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (PPKI, Committee for the Preparation of Indonesian Independence) to adjust key aspects of the republic's draft constitution, notably its preamble. The changes enjoined by Hatta on members of the Preparation Committee, charged with finalizing and promulgating the constitution, were made quickly and with little dispute. Their effect, however, particularly the removal of seven words stipulating that all Muslims should observe Islamic law, was significantly to reduce the proposed formal role of Islam in Indonesian political and social life. Episodically thereafter, the actions of the PPKI that day came to be castigated by some Muslims as catastrophic for Islam in Indonesia—indeed, as an act of treason* 1—and efforts were put in train to restore the seven words to the constitution.2 In retracing the history of the drafting of the Jakarta Charter in June 1945, * This research was supported under the Australian Research Council's Discovery Projects funding scheme. PEMIKIRAN POLITIK SUTAN SJAHRIR TENTANG SOSIALISME SEBUAH ANALISIS PSIKOLOGI POLITIK SUTAN SJAHRIR POLITICAL THOUGHT ABOUT SOCIALISM AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL POLITIC ANALYSIS Restuning Pramasanti, Tri Cahya Utama, Budi Setiyono D2B007048 Abstract This research is used to explain Sutan Sjahrir‘s development process of Socialism thought, and which psychological factors that influenced it. The type of reasearch is historical descriptif, because the subjects is a deceased character. Thus, this kind of reasearch is library research which is used to analyze datas such as books, journals, articles and other results of previous reasearch about Sutan SMahrir‘s life and thought that still considered as a relevant. Those datas were sistematically refined so that the result of the research can be earned as expected. The research showed that the psychological factors which have influenced Sutan Sjahrir‘s thought of Socialism are his avidity reading Socialism books, European eagerness after World War I, his interaction with the Socialist in Netherland and also his activities in many Socialist organizations. As for a character who influenced him the most was Karl Marx. For Sutan Sjahrir, Socialism is supposed to be based on people. Socialism for humanity, by recognizing the equality of people. His thought about this is used as political fundamental of Partai Sosialis Indonesia he formed. Key word: Sutan Sjahrir, Socialism, Psychological factor, Karl Marx. Abstrak Penelitian ini digunakan untuk menjelaskan perkembangan pemikiran sosialisme Sutan Sjahrir serta faktor psikologis apa saja yang mempengaruhinya. Tipe penelitian adalah deskriptif historis karena subjek yang diteliti adalah tokoh non-present (tokoh yang sudah meninggal dunia). e-ISSN : 2528 - 2069 SOEKARNO’S POLITICAL THINKING ABOUT GUIDED DEMOCRACY Author : Gili Argenti and Dini Sri Istining Dias Government Science, State University of Singaperbangsa Karawang (UNSIKA) Email : [email protected] and [email protected] ABSTRACT Soekarno is one of the leaders of the four founders of the Republic of Indonesia, his political thinking is very broad, one of his political thinking about democracy is guided democracy into controversy, in his youth Soekarno was known as a very revolutionary, humanist and progressive figure of political thinkers of his day. His thoughts on leading democracy put his figure as a leader judged authoritarian by his political opponents. This paper is a study of thought about Soekarno, especially his thinking about the concept of democracy which is considered as a political concept typical of Indonesian cultures. Key word: Soekarno, democracy PRELIMINARY Soekarno is one of the four founders of the Republic of Indonesia according to the version of Tempo Magazine, as political figures aligned with Mohammad Hatta, Sutan Sjahrir and Tan Malaka. Soekarno's thought of national politics placed himself as a great thinker that Indonesian ever had. In the typology of political thought, his nationality has been placed as a radical nationalist thinker, since his youthful interest in politics has been enormous. As an active politician, Soekarno poured many of his thinkers into speeches, articles and books. One of Soekarno's highly controversial and inviting notions of polemic up to now is the political thought of guided democracy. Young Soekarno's thoughts were filled with revolutionary idealism and anti-oppression, but at the end of his reign, he became a repressive and anti-democratic thinker. -

BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Sutan Sjahrir (1909 – 1966) adalah seorang pahlawan nasional Republik Indonesia. 1 Ia merupakan seorang tokoh pergerakan dan politik yang terkenal semasa hidupnya. Tokoh-tokoh yang seangkatan dengan Sjahrir ialah Soekarno, Mohammad Hatta, Mohammad Natsir dan tokoh-tokoh lain yang lahir pada tahun 1900-an. Soekarno ialah seorang penggagas ideologi Marhaenisme. Presiden pertama Indonesia ini menuliskan gagasan-gagasannya tentang cara pandang dunia tersebut di dalam kumpulan tulisannya yang berjudul Di Bawah Bendera Revolusi jilid I dan II. Mohammad Hatta merupakan seorang ekonom, ini bisa kita lihat dari tulisan-tulisannya dalam Kumpulan Karangan I, II, dan III. Hatta juga menulis persoalan politik, ini bisa kita lihat dalam Demokrasi Kita dan majalah Daulat Ra’jat. Kemudian Mohammad Natsir yang merupakan tokoh pemikir Islam. Natsir adalah seorang pemikir Islam yang mencoba menyelaraskan Islam sebagai dasar negara. Tulisan-tulisannya mengenai kemungkinan-kemungkinan Islam diaplikasikan sebagai ideologi di Indonesia bisa dibaca dalam Kapita Selekta. Sementara itu, Sjahrir adalah figur yang unik dan tidak seperti figur-figur yang sezaman dengannya. Padahal jika ditilik lebih jauh, ia juga merupakan seorang pemikir budaya meskipun hal ini hanya diketahui oleh orang- orang terdekatnya di Partai Sosialis Indonesia seperti Soedjatmoko dan Soebadio Sastrosatomo. 2 Bung Kecil, sapaan akrabnya, tidak hanya menulis tentang ideologi tetapi juga mengenai kebudayaan. Dalam majalah Poedjangga Baroe, ia menanggapi pertikaian yang terjadi antara kelompok pro-Barat dan pro-Timur untuk menentukan arah kebudayaan Indonesia. -

Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth. -
