As the match day temperatures reduce in May to cooler weather the league seems to be heating up with a potential second place up for grabs with todays encounter against Sorrento. As tight as it is a loss could drop you 4 or 5 places so today should be other great encounter with Sorrento. Our U18’s Head Coach Kieran David and our U20’s Head Coach Tim Cash both have spent recent years at Sorrento and have spoken very highly of the club and credit to Sorrento after my recent visit there in the night series they have also done a lot to improve their facilities. Over the past month we have been working ever so hard at the back ensuring we reduce the number of goals we are conceding mainly through individual errors. The number slowly relied after conceding 4 to Inglewood, 3 to Armadale and 2 against Perth we have now kept 3 clean sheets on the trot which includes our cup match. Obviously today we will aim to continue with a focus of limiting the chances given to Sor- rento firstly from errors and secondly allowing them time and space in dangerous areas of the park. Our last match we encountered a tough Balcatta who have already shown this season they will not be an easy team to beat especially at their home ground. The first half was reasonably balanced with Balcatta trying to get in behind us through long diagonal balls whilst our chances came through the middle third of the pitch. After a goalless first half we came out flying and after Dean Evans delivered a deep free kick, it was once again Chris Saldaris who volleyed home from 6 yards after just 46 minutes. Both teams contin- ued to go head to head and with just a few minutes before the final whistle we managed to put the game to bed when Nick Ambrogio fired home to ensure all 3 points went to Athena. We came away with no injuries or suspensions and now look forward to our home match today against Sorrento. Due to the hard work from our head physio Fred Vanin and the players determination to regain full fitness we have seen over the past few weeks injured players Jamal Reiners, Luka Ninkovic and Jon Stynes return to training and hopefully over the next few weeks full match fitness. Our support staff, Dr Emma Black, Ethan Burke, Jesse Deas and David Kist have also been an integral part to our team allowing both myself and the players to receive live and post match Heart Rate and GPS data, Video Analysis, Match Analytics and Opposition Analysis. Our head physio Fred Vanin ensures the players receive the latest Sports Science recovery and injury prevention methods whilst our team manager Jimmy Campbell supports in every way shape and form. Finally I would like to thank the Club, the community and supporters for being part of this terrific journey and we hope to see the 2019 season reap great rewards. We hope for a great game today and I would like to invite Jamie Harnwell to share a bite to eat and drink with all the Sorrento players and staff after the game in the Clubhouse. Enjoy the football today, FFA CUP DRAW Garrett McDuling The ties are scheduled for the weekend of May 18/19. The 2010/11 year has been a successful one continuing on from recent years under the stewardship of our former Chairman, Kevin Campbell, whom I must sincerely commend for handing the organisation on in such a fine state. As you will note from the financial statements that follow, we have continued to improve our financial position with a modest but handy surplus. Whilst a surplus is always nice, Football West is about much more than that. It allows us to trade through the lean times without the need for an overdraft facility. The breadth and extent of some our various programs never ceases to amaze me. Whilst on the subject of finances, the Board and I continue to be aware of the increasing cost of playing sport, and this season we were pleased to be able to put a freeze on the fees you pay to be part of the World game.
