Safety - Hike Leader and Sweep Responsibility Leader/Coordinator It is a good idea for the Leader/Coordinator to scout the trail ahead of time to avoid confusion with the trail’s direction and the time it will take to complete the hike. Take note of the terrain and time of year. This will make it easier to code the difficulty of the hike. The Leader/Coordinator must keep track of the group. He or she belongs somewhere in the vicinity of the group, not a mile ahead! Keeping a challenging pace is important, to be sure, but so is the group's enjoyment of each other's company. If at all possible, be sure to designate someone as a sweep. Sweep The Sweep’s responsibility is to ensure that the hiking group stays together. The sweep is the last hiker in the line of hikers. If hikers begin to fall behind, the sweep must notify the Leader to ensure that the group stays together. Notifying the Leader may involve “sending up” the line of hikers information for the Leader to stop and wait until all hikers catch up. If the Sweep no longer wants the responsibility, the Leader should be notified and another hiker will be designated as the sweep. The Sweep is responsible to make sure no hiker falls behind the group and that the group stay “intact”. Foothills Trail Club www.foothillstrailclub.org !2 TALES July 2016 FOOTHILLS TRAIL CLUB HIKING TIPS * Try to arrive a few minutes ahead of the scheduled start time. The rule of the club is to start on time. * Do not wander off the trail without letting the coordinator know. This means for "pit stops" or other little side trips when you are out of sight of the group. Also, follow the route the coordinator has chosen. If you want to explore other routes, come back another time on your own. * If you have any questions about the length of a hike, the terrain or the pace, please call the coordinator before the hike. It is better to find out before a hike, rather than in the middle of one, that the hike is too strenuous for your abilities. * The coordinator must keep track of the group. He or she belongs somewhere in the vicinity of the group, not a mile ahead! Keeping a challenging pace is important, to be sure, but so is the group's enjoyment of each other's company. If at all possible, designate someone as a sweep. Once the sweep is in sight, the coordinator will know everyone is accounted for. * If there is a fork in the trail or a crossing, the coordinator should wait until everyone is in sight so that all hikers make the correct turn. * It is also the responsibility of the coordinator to scout the trail ahead of time to avoid aimless wandering and to have some idea of the time it will take to cover the distance, according to terrain, time of year, etc. * All participants on a hike involving placement of cars are responsible for helping transport hikers as necessary. No one, whose car is at the end of the hike, should leave unless the coordinator assures him or her that their car is not needed. Also, the coordinator should not leave until he or she knows the last car has started. TYPES OF HIKES A typical schedule for the Foothills Trail Club includes day hikes all over the Western New York area, usually 5 to 10+ miles long; trail work parties; mini-hikes in area parks on summer evenings; weekday morning "saunters" at a slower pace; nature walks; snowshoe hikes in winter and perhaps a trip to a more distant area. We hike every weekend of the year. Guests and new members are always welcome. Hikes on our schedule are rated by pace and terrain. If you have questions about the difficulty of a hike, the equipment needed or the meeting place, contact the hike coordinator. GRADING FOR HIKES 1 — Leisurely pace or nature walk A — Flat or very gently rolling terrain 2 — Moderate pace B — Moderately hilly terrain 3 — Brisk, steady pace C — Steep hills, scrambles possible 4 — Fast pace Map numbers on hiking schedule refer to Finger Lakes Trail conference maps. To purchase maps, you may visit the Finger Lakes website at: www.fltconference.org or call 585-658-9320. This 6 mile section was originally dedicated to “Mabel James” May 5, 1962. Also dedicated on June 5, 2004 the trail from Carpenter to Humphries to Art & Olga Rosche — two of our founding members and again unveiling of this beautiful sign. Six founding members were in attendance that day and several did hike a short section of the trail just to reminisce. In addition to the founding members, also in attendance were some landowners, a Boy Scout troop and many hikers approximately 60 people in all. Two hikes were offered that day with a potluck afterwards. A few year back David Potzler refinished the signs and just this spring Frank Occhiuto refinished them again. These are beautiful signs and part of our history and we need to keep them in good shape. Thanks to Dave and Frank for taking the time to spruce these signs up so they can be enjoyed for years to come.
