SHORT HISTORY In Canada, until about last 40 years ago, one would hardly find any Hindi speaking people, and even if you find a Hindi speaking person, he or she would feel shy and hesitate to speak Hindi in a public place. This was the case in Toronto, which has mild winter and is the biggest, most populated, most developing and most cosmopolitan city in Canada, followed by Vancouver. The situation in rest of Canada was even poorer. Fusion Without Confusion Raga Basics Indian Rhythm Basics Solkattu, also known as konnakol is the art of performing percussion syllables vocally. It comes from the Carnatic music tradition of South India and is mostly used in conjunction with instrumental music and dance instruction, although it has been widely adopted throughout the world as a modern composition and performance tool. Similarly, the music of North India has its own system of rhythm vocalization that is based on Bols, which are the vocalization of specific sounds that correspond to specific sounds that are made on the drums of North India, most notably the Tabla drums. Like in the south, the bols are used in musical training, as well as composition and performance. In addition, solkattu sounds are often referred to as bols, and the practice of reciting bols in the north is sometimes referred to as solkattu, so the distinction between the two practices is blurred a bit. The exercises and compositions we will discuss contain bols that are found in both North and South India, however they come from the tradition of the North Indian tabla drums. Furthermore, the theoretical aspect of the compositions is distinctly from the Hindustani, (north Indian) tradition. Hence, for the purpose of this presentation, the use of the term Solkattu refers to the broader, more general practice of Indian rhythmic language. JAGDAMBI PRASAD YADAV Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) the details of recommendations made by the Sixth World Hindi Conference held in London during September, 1999; (b) the steps taken to implement these recommendations so far; ( (c) the reasons for delay in implementing these recommendations; and (d) the measures proposed to be taken to remove the bottlenecks coming in the way of implementing the recommendations ? Answer MINISTER OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI JASWANT SINGH) (a) In the Sixth World Hindi Conference, the following resolutions were passed: 1) Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University should be developed as an International Centre for assimilatingi nformation pertaining to Hindi from all over the World. 2) World Hindi Secretariat should start functioning at the earliest. 3) Hindi should be made as one of the languages of the United Nations. 4) Information Technology in Hindi should be developed and standardized. 5) Modern gadgets of Hindi should be liberally distributed. (b) Government are taking necessary steps for implementing these resolutions. They include the following: 1. The Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University isl ooking at ways to develop as an international centre for assimilating information on Hindi. 2. The action regarding establishment of World Hindi Secretariat has already been initiated. Suitable office premises has been identified for the Secretariat to be temporarily located. Invite students to play with these possibilities. From the grounds of the Railways Sports Club in Nairobi’s Uhuru (Freedom) Park, with a backdrop of the city skyline, we celebrated the third annual Storymoja Hay Festival from 15–18 September. Poetry and storytelling, technology, culture, Gay rights, religion, football, politics, comedy and music were all shared over the four days of the festival. Artists came from Australia, America, Europe, and of course from across Africa. The Alchemist Hay Festival in Kerala in 2011 brought three days of stimulating discussions and events. The line-up included Jung Chang, author of Wild Swans and biographer of Chairman Mao; BBC World Anchor Nik Gowing chairing the Suzlon Debate about energy production; author Anita Nair; award-winning French novelist Agnès Desarthe; Simon Singh lecturing on cosmology and codes; and writer and academic Germaine Greer speaking BROWSING THE PROGRAMME about Shakespeare’s lovers.
