The Uatu System for Visualizing Networked Writing Activity J. Holden Hill, Phillip Parli-Horne, Paul Gestwicki Brian McNely Computer Science Department English Department [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] [email protected] Ball State University Computer Science Department Technical Report 2011-01 June 3, 2011 Abstract Over the course of an academic year, two students and a pair of faculty advisors have written software to visualize how participants collaborate on networked writing projects. Using Google Docs as a way to allow students to instantaneously interact with a document in real-time, this software captures data from Google’s cloud service and displays it in a pair of visualizations. We used agile methods of software development to devise a way to implement their ideas in an appealing way. This document contains detailed instructions on where the latest iteration of the software can be located. It also details the process of making the system operational on a new machine, stating how the software works and where it should be placed in the file system. The document also explains how one can use the system to visualize writing collaboration. Finally, many failed iterations of the software have led to meaningful reflections on software development practices. The document elaborates on the hardships of development, as well as provides insight on how this software may evolve toward richer experiences. 1Primary contact 1 1. Introduction The Uatu project is designed to visualize collaborations in a digital workspace. The name comes from the Marvel Comics character, Uatu the Watcher, who is tasked with watching over the universe; in the same way, this software watches over revisions of Google Documents and stores their information for later access.

  • Google Groups May 18Th Review: I Support the Rezoning Needed For
Google Groups May 18th review: I support the ReZoning needed for Cold Storage Building on West Commercial Street Jenny Potter Scheu <[email protected]> May 16, 2017 10:29 AM Posted in group: Planning Board To: Elizabeth Boepple, Sean Dundon, David Eaton, Brandon Mazer, Carol Morrissette, Maggie Stanley, and Lisa Whited Dear Portland Planning Board, I am writing to support the rezoning which needs to happen in order go forward with the construction of a large new Cold Storage building on West Commercial Street. I strongly support the construction of this building as a very important addition to the waterfront/city economy. Where I live near the eastern end of the Portland waterfront, we have dealt with critics who do not support any development which blocks views of the harbor. I favor thoughtful new development, and submit that there are many existing protections for views. ( I would be glad if such a building was built on the east end of Commercial Street! ) The important addition of this proposed Cold Storage Building trumps any concerns for it’s blocking some of the views from the western neighborhood. I am sorry that I cannot attend the May 18th site review and workshop, and wanted to express my support for this very important development opportunity. Thanks so much to each of you and the Planning staff for your steady hard work for the city and all citizens. Best wishes, Jenny Scheu [email protected] Home: 29 Waterville Street, #3, Portland ME 04101 Business: Redhouse Architects, 61 Pleasant Street, Studio 104C, Portland ME 04101 Google Groups Comment on proposed cold storage Carson, Keith <[email protected]> May 16, 2017 11:40 AM Posted in group: Planning Board Morning all, I know you’ve received plenty of public comment on this matter so I’ll keep it short: I’m a “fringe west ender” living on York street and this proposed zoning would not impact my views in any way; as such I feel I’m more neutral when assessing this proposal.

  • Written Testimony of Keith Enright Chief Privacy Officer, Google United
Written Testimony of Keith Enright Chief Privacy Officer, Google United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Hearing on “Examining Safeguards for Consumer Data Privacy” September 26, 2018 Chairman Thune, Ranking Member Nelson, and distinguished members of the Committee: thank you for the opportunity to appear before you this morning. I appreciate your leadership on the important issues of data privacy and security, and I welcome the opportunity to discuss Google’s work in these areas. My name is Keith Enright, and I am the Chief Privacy Officer for Google. I have worked at the intersection of technology, privacy, and the law for nearly 20 years, including as the functional privacy lead for two other companies prior to joining Google in 2011. In that time, I have been fortunate to engage with legislators, regulatory agencies, academics, and civil society to help inform and improve privacy protections for individuals around the world. I lead Google’s global privacy legal team and, together with product and engineering partners, direct our Office of Privacy and Data Protection, which is responsible for legal compliance, the application of our privacy principles, and generally meeting our users’ expectations of privacy. This work is the effort of a large cross-functional team of engineers, researchers, and other experts whose principal mission is protecting the privacy of our users. Across every single economic sector, government function, and organizational mission, data and technology are critical keys to success. With advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning, data-based research and services will continue to drive economic development and social progress in the years to come.

  • Query Expansion Based on Crowd Knowledge for Code Search
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SERVICES COMPUTING, VOL. 9, NO. X, XXXXX 2016 1 Query Expansion Based on Crowd Knowledge for Code Search Liming Nie, He Jiang, Zhilei Ren, Zeyi Sun, and Xiaochen Li Abstract—As code search is a frequent developer activity in software development practices, improving the performance of code search is a critical task. In the text retrieval based search techniques employed in the code search, the term mismatch problem is a critical language issue for retrieval effectiveness. By reformulating the queries, query expansion provides effective ways to solve the term mismatch problem. In this paper, we propose Query Expansion based on Crowd Knowledge (QECK), a novel technique to improve the performance of code search algorithms. QECK identifies software-specific expansion words from the high quality pseudo relevance feedback question and answer pairs on Stack Overflow to automatically generate the expansion queries. Furthermore, we incorporate QECK in the classic Rocchio’s model, and propose QECK based code search method QECKRocchio. We conduct three experiments to evaluate our QECK technique and investigate QECKRocchio in a large-scale corpus containing real-world code snippets and a question and answer pair collection. The results show that QECK improves the performance of three code search algorithms by up to 64 percent in Precision, and 35 percent in NDCG. Meanwhile, compared with the state-of-the-art query expansion method, the improvement of QECKRocchio is 22 percent in Precision, and 16 percent in NDCG. Index Terms—Code search, crowd knowledge, query expansion, information retrieval, question & answer pair Ç 1INTRODUCTION ODE search is a frequent developer activity in software Obviously, it is not an easy task to formulate a good query, Cdevelopment practices, which has been a part of soft- which depends greatly on the experience of the developer and ware development for decades [47].
