AVALANCHE PRESEASON GAME NOTES Saturday, October 8, 2016 Avalanche vs. Kings — T. Mobile Arena ()

Tonight: The wraps up the 2016 preseason with the annual Frozen Fury game against the . Puck drop is slated for 8 p.m. (MT) at the new T. Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Colorado is undefeated through its first five exhibition contests, outscoring opponents 14-4 and is the NHL’s only unbeaten team in exhibition play. The last time the Avalanche won five or more games in preseason play was the 2006-07 season (5-1-0). Colorado’s exhibition slate included three home games, two road contests and one at a neutral site. The Avs faced Minnesota, Dallas and Los Angeles twice each, beginning the preseason on the road at Minnesota before returning to for three straight games on home ice. The Avalanche opens the 2016-17 regular season one week from tonight on Oct. 15 against the at Pepsi Center.

Tune In: All preseason and regular season games can be heard on the Altitude Radio Network, with Altitude Sports Radio (KKSE 950AM) serving as the flagship home of Avalanche hockey in 2016-17. Marc Moser will call the action for all six exhibition games and all 82 regular season contests, with Altitude TV analyst Peter McNab joining him in the booth for the preseason.

FROZEN FURY: The Avalanche closes out the preseason tonight with the annual Frozen Fury matchup against the Los Angeles Kings at the new T. Mobile Arena in Las Vegas…This marks the 18th annual Frozen Fury in Las Vegas and the 16th time that the Avalanche has taken part in the event…The Avs played in the first two contests in 1997 and ’98, again in 2000, and have participated in each of the last 13 Frozen Fury matchups (including this season)… Colorado is 7-8-1 all-time in the Frozen Fury, which included a doubleheader in 1998.

Avs Undefeated in Preseason: The Avalanche is 5-0-0 in the preseason with wins over the Minnesota Wild (twice), the Dallas Stars (twice) and the Los Angeles Kings. Colorado has outscored opponents 14-4 through four games and is a perfect 21-for-21 on the kill. The Avs and the (15-for-15) are the only two teams that have not allowed a power-play in exhibition play. Andreas Martinsen scored the Avalanche’s lone goal and Calvin Pickard turned away all 28 shots he faced to lead Colorado to a 1-0 win over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night. Martinsen lit the lamp on a cross-ice feed from Ben Smith to give the Avs a 1-0 lead at the 8:25 mark of the opening period. Pickard took over from there, backstopping Colorado to its second consecutive preseason shutout.

Second Exhibition Meeting With Kings: Saturday’s game will be the second meeting between the Avs and the Kings this preseason. Colorado won the first matchup, which took place on Sept. 30 at Pepsi Center, 3-1. Mikhail Grigorenko scored twice, including a power-play goal, and Nathan MacKinnon tallied his first goal of the preseason in his first game since returning from the World Cup. Semyon Varlamov, also playing in his first exhibition contest since re-joining the team after participating in the World Cup, finished with 33-of-34 saves. Rene Bourque added two assists, factoring into both MacKinnon’s goal and Grigorenko’s second tally of the night. The Avs were 1-for-5 on the power play while holding the Kings scoreless on five opportunities with the man advantage.

Transactions: On Thursday, Oct. 6, the Avalanche reassigned defensemen Chris Bigras and Anton Lindholm and forward J.T. Compher to San Antonio (AHL).

On Sunday, Oct. 2, the Avalanche reassigned the following players to San Antonio (AHL): LW Troy Bourke, C Turner Elson, LW A.J. Greer, C Sam Henley, G Spencer Martin, C Jim O’Brien, G Jeremy Smith, D Ryan Stanton, and RW Joe Whitney.

On Thursday, Sept. 29, the Avalanche reassigned defenseman Nicolas Meloche (Gatineau, QMJHL), forwards Shawn St-Amant (San Antonio, AHL) and J.C. Beaudin (Rouyn-Noranda, QMJHL) and goaltenders Nathan Lieuwen (San Antonio, AHL) and Kent Simpson (San Antonio, AHL). Additionally, defenseman Mason Geertsen and forward Reid Petryk will report to San Antonio (AHL) for injury rehab.

On Monday, Sept. 26, the Avalanche reassigned defenseman Josh Anderson (Prince George, WHL) and forwards Travis Barron (Ottawa, OHL), Jackson Houck (San Antonio, AHL), Brogan O'Brien (Prince George, WHL), Gustav Olhaver (Rogle J20, Sweden) and Jeffrey Truchon-Viel (Acadie-Bathurst, QMJHL).

Avalanche vs. Kings Series History: The Avalanche is 35-37-4-5 in 81 regular-season games played against the Kings since the 1995-96 season. Tyson Barrie tallied two goals and three assists in two games against Los Angeles during the 2015-16 campaign. also notched five points in the season series, totaling three goals and two assists in three contests. With 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 20 career games against the Kings, Duchene ranks tied for ninth in Avalanche history (since the 1995- 96 season) in points in the all-time series. Burgundy/White Game: The Avalanche hosted its annual Burgundy/White Game on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Magness Arena on the University of Denver campus. Sergei Boikov’s shot rebounded to the stick of Mikhail Grigorenko, and with 28.8 seconds remaining in regulation, the Russian forward buried the puck to lift the White team to a 1-0 win. Jeremy Smith, Kent Simpson and Nathan Lieuwen each played a period in net for White, combining for 21 saves in the shutout victory. Calvin Pickard played 40 minutes for Burgundy and made 16 saves on 16 shots before Spencer Martin entered the game at the start of the third period.

2016 Rookie Showcase: The Avs hosted the 2016 Rookie Showcase, a three-day tournament with the and the San Jose Sharks at the Ice Center at the Promenade in Westminster, Colo., from Sept. 17-19. The Avs won the tournament, taking 4-1 and 3-2 wins over the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, respectively. Against the Sharks, J.T. Compher led all skaters with a goal and an assist. Chris Bigras, A.J. Greer and tallied the other three goals for the Avalanche. Colorado finished 1-for-2 on the power play while holding the Sharks scoreless on seven opportunities with the man advantage. Spencer Martin stopped all 12 shots he saw before being replaced by Chase Marchand midway through the game. In the second contest against the Ducks, Cody Corbett recorded two assists and Nicolas Meloche, Gustav Olhaver and Chris Bigras each tallied goals to lift the Avs to a 3-2 win. Bigras’ goal, a blast from the point at 4:02 of the third period, stood as the game winner. Martin played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with 30 saves.

2016-17 Regular Season Schedule: The Avalanche opens its 21st season in Denver on Sat., Oct. 15 against the Dallas Stars… the Oct. 15 opener is the latest start date to a full season in Avalanche/Nordiques history… The Avs have only seven games in October (two at home), their fewest ever in that particular month… The Avalanche’s longest road trip of the year is five games (Feb. 11-17), while its longest homestand is also five contests (Nov. 23 to Dec. 3)… Colorado’s busiest month is March (16 games), which will equal its most games ever in that month. The Avs will also match their busiest December ever with 15 dates.
