BUS TRIP—The Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau sent 105 pilgrims on two buses to see Pope Francis and participate in the papal Mass that closed the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia on Sept. 27.

by Katie Newton

n Friday, Sept. 25, two charter buses left the Diocese of Springfield- Cape Girardeau bound for OPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania. The 105 pilgrims on board hoped for a chance to see Pope Francis, attend the Papal Mass and receive Communion at the conclusion of the World Meeting of Families, but there was no guarantee that these hopes would be fulfilled. It was a journey of faith. Our contingent included a 4-year-old boy, seniors old enough to be his great-great grandparents, and every age in between! CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF STS. PETER AND PAUL—Pope Francis celebrated Mass in the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, PA, during We traveled for two long days to get the World Meeting of Families. The liturgy was broadcast all over the city via into Pennsylvania. On Sunday morning, jumbotron televisions and Communion was offered to hundreds of thousands of the day of the Mass, we left our hotel at Catholic faithful. 5:45 a.m. and traveled two hours into Philadelphia, where the waiting began: two hours in line to get through security, another three hours for our chance to see the Pope pass by before Mass. There were plenty of opportunities for complaints, but few were heard. Our spirits were strong and the sense of anticipation for whatever might come was amazing. This was a pilgrimage!

Arriving in Philadelphia, our entourage split into several smaller groups as we made our way to City Center. My husband and 14-year-old son found a great spot along barricades just west of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and directly on the Pope’s scheduled route. Waiting with us was a large group of high school students representing many different Jesuit high schools across the country. We were so impressed with their love for the Church, WAITING—After hours through security check points, the faithful spent hours and their enthusiasm at seeing the Holy Father hoping for a glimpse of the pope. They were not disappointed. US PAPAL VISIT 2015 October 16, 2015 DIOCESAN NEWS The Mirror 7 A Small Act of Kindness
