4 Howard University Head Coach

Rayford Petty Head Coach (Interim) Elon, 1979 First Season Rayford “Ray” Petty enters his second campaign as head football coach of the Howard University Bison. The highly respected Petty served as head coach of the Bison from 2002-06. He also served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator here under head coach .

Prior to Howard, Petty served as defensive coordinator at both Delaware State and Norfolk State. He spent four seasons with the Hornets, and amongst his team’s defensive highlights, DSU earned a No. 3 MEAC ranking in turnover margin (+0.5 pg) with a total of 22 forced turnovers and four touchdowns scored. In 2008, the DSU defense was ranked second in the MEAC in pass efficiency defense (79.5) and opponents’ first downs (15.3 pg), and third in total defense (288.4 ypg) and pass defense (1441. ypg). The Hornets were named MEAC champions in 2007 and Petty’s unit garnered national rankings in pass efficiency defense (No. 9/105.33), scoring defense (No. 13/18.4 ppg) and overall pass defense (No. 14/169.7). That year, Delaware State finished No. 1 in the MEAC in scoring defense.

Prior to coaching at DSU, Petty posted a 25- 30 record as the head coach of Howard (2002-06). Under Petty’s defen- sive genius, Howard set a NCAA FCS mark in 2003 for most returned fumbles for touchdowns with eight. In 2011, the defense ranked among the nation’s best in tackles for losses, sacks and pass defense.

His resume is impressive as he has helped developed former or current National Football League draftees/signees Antoine Bethea (currently with the Indianapolis Colts), Marques Douglas (retired), Ronald Bartell, Jr (currently with the Detroit Lions), Tracy White (retired) and Geoff Pope (retired).

During his first stint with the Bison, he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1992-99. Petty was the defensive coordinator for the Bison during both the 1993 and 1996 seasons when the team captured Black College National championships. Howard went 11-0 during their 1993 season, earning them an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs as well as the MEAC championship. In 1996, the Bison defeated in the Heritage Bowl.

He received his undergraduate degree from Elon College. He and his wife Hazel have one daughter, Chantell and one son Shawn.

11 North Carolina Central University Head Coach

Dwayne Foster Head Coach (Interim) Delaware State, 1993 First Season

Dwayne Foster joined the NCCU coaching staff in 2011 as assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to the 2013 season, Foster was elevated to interim head coach.

Foster was with former head coach Henry Frazier III during the prior six seasons after joining Prairie View in 2005 as running backs coach. He was also with Frazier in 2003 at Bowie State as offensive line coach. In between those stints, he was the tight ends and running backs coach at Catholic University in his hometown Washington, D.C.

Foster started his coaching career as head coach at his alma mater, Archbishop Carroll High School, from 1997-2003. During his successful tenure, he was named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1998.

A 1993 graduate of Delaware State University, Foster helped lead the Hornets to two MEAC football championships.

A CLOSER LOOK...

In 2008, running back Donald Babers became Prairie View’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 1988 as the Panthers topped the charts in rush offense with 172.7 yards per outing and 23 rushing touchdowns. Babers, who earned All-SWAC First Team Honors, was the only running back in the SWAC to eclipse the 1,000-yard barrier and post double-digit touchdowns in 2008. In addition, Babers posted the top three rushing performances in the SWAC on the season highlighted by a 202-yard performance against Arkansas- Pine Bluff.

Under Foster’s watchful eye in 2007, Babers made headlines in his first collegiate season with a 215-yard performance against Mis- sissippi Valley State. The highlight of the season occurred against Alcorn State when the Panthers combined to rush for 248 yards on 48 carries en route to their first-ever win at Jack Spinks Stadium in Alcorn State, Miss.

During the 2005 and 2006 campaigns, Foster helped develop the backfield of Arnell Fontenot and Kerry Wilson into one of the top duos in the SWAC. In 2005, Fontenot and Wilson combined to rush for 1,325 yards and 11 touchdowns as the Panthers doubled their output from the previous season. Joined by Calvin Harris’ 422 yards in 2006, Foster’s back- field rushed for 1,399 yards and seven touchdowns during a season which was highlighted by Fontenot’s game-winning touchdown run in overtime to defeat Southern for the first time since 1988.

Before arriving at Prairie View A&M, Foster spent the 2004 season at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., as their tight ends and running backs coach. Along with his positional duties, Foster was also responsible for coordinating Catholic’s special teams game plan.

Prior to coaching at Catholic University, Foster worked with Frazier at Bowie State University in Bowie, Md. for the 2003 season. As a member of Frazier’s staff, Foster helped guide Bowie State to a second-place finish in the CIAA.

Foster made his name on the high school level in Washington, D.C., as the head coach of Archbishop Carroll High School from 1997 to 2003. At Archbishop, Foster received Coach of the Year Honors by the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Committee in 1998.

Foster played collegiately at Delaware State University from 1989 to 1993 and helped the Hornets capture two MEAC Champion- ships during his freshmen and junior seasons.

Off the field, Foster is a member of the Black Coaches and American Football Coaches Associations. He was partoftheNFL Minority Coaching Fellowship Program in 2010 with the Buffalo Bills and in 2012 with the Cincinnati Bengals, in addition to participating in the NCAA Men’s Football Coaching Academy in Indianapolis, Ind., during June of 2006.

He’s married to the former Lashun Powers of Washington, D.C., and they have three children, Delaney, Drew, and Denae. 12 North Carolina Central University Numerical Roster
