Gifted by the artist to Towner 1999 Dimensions 53.9 x 67.8 cm This work has been chosen to support ‘Our Place’ – Annual Schools Exhibition 2015 - celebrating the built heritage of the South Downs. Towner Gallery in partnership with South Downs National Park Authority, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery and the Flora Twort Gallery Petersfield About the artist Robert Tavener was born in Hampstead, London, in 1920. He attended Hornsey College of Art where he studied lithography, as well as completing an Art Teacher’s Diploma. In 1953 Tavener and his wife moved to Eastbourne. He became head of printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art, where he created a well respected printmaking department, and later became the college’s Vice-Principal. The Taveners lived in the same house in Eastbourne for 50 years. The house was at the foot of the Downs with a garden gate that opened directly on to the South Downs Way leading up to Beachy Head. He said that the Downs provided him with enough subject matter to last him indefinitely. Whilst teaching, Tavener continued to produce his own work as an illustrator and printmaker. He gained many commissions from clients such as London Transport, Shell, and the BBC. He was a successful artist during his lifetime, and his work very much in demand. As well as the many in the Towner Collection, his work is held in more than 25 public collections in the UK, including the V& A and the Government Art Collection.

The works on the façade by Liam Gillick were completed, allowing the public to see the effects as they walked past. Work continues apace both inside and out on the other projects by the ten artists. We on the Advisory Committee have been actively involved in the approval and monitoring of these art installations – the first time the Government Art Collection (GAC) has been involved in a building this way. The Advisory Committee, which includes the Directors of Tate, the National Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery among its distinguished members, has no direct line or management responsibility for the GAC. However, as Chairman, I can attest to the enthusiasm and active spirit of involvement in which the Committee meetings are held. Beyond that, the members’ expertise and connections with the art world mean that the Director is able at any one time to consult individual members for their views.

There he was part of a group of intellectuals and artists, including Ernst Mancoba who was a close colleague of Gerard Sekoto . Maleka feels he was influenced by Ernst Mancoba who exhibited with the Cobra Movement. Cobra was a mile stone in the development of European Abstract Expressionism, and very similar to American Action Painting. Maleka quotes: “ When I paint I listen to music. I like classical music and Jazz. I let my brush move freely to the music. / let it dance as it responds to the instruments. Sometimes I will listen to the same song over and over again as I paint.” Maleka delves into the world of colour and symbols. His colours harmonize and resonate in response to his emotions and the music Maleka mentions Joseph Bouys as an influence on his art. Bouys noted the bond between art and music. These link humanity, convey a sense of ‘Ubuntu’ a positive force spoken of by Creda Mutwa, the African traditional healer. Title. Expression. Title: Blooming. Dimensions: 50. J hy 37cm.
