Sandidge Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science Policy and Management, Berkeley Professor Neil Tsutsui, Chair Invasive species and habitat destruction are considered to be the leading causes of biodiversity decline, signaling declining ecosystem health on a global scale. Ants (Formicidae) include some on the most widespread and impactful invasive species capable of establishing in high numbers in new habitats. The tropical grasslands of Indonesia are home to several invasive species of ants. Invasive ants are transported in shipped goods, causing many species to be of global concern. My dissertation explores ant communities in the grasslands of southeastern Indonesia. Communities are described for the first time with a special focus on the Tropical Fire Ant, Solenopsis geminata, which consumes grass seeds and can have negative ecological impacts in invaded areas. The first chapter describes grassland ant communities in both disturbed and undisturbed grasslands. -

GIST GEE BY WILLIAM MORTON WHEELER In two collections recently received, one made by Professor S. F. Light in Southern China (Amoy and vicinity) and one by Professor N. Gist Gee in Northern China (vicinity of Peking), I find several forms not recorded in previous papers. In addition to several new forms, Professor Light has discovered the male of the very singular monotypic genus Trigonogaster Forel. DorylinM Anictus fergusoni Forel var. hodgsoni Forel.-Eight workers from Back Liang (Light). Znictus latiscapus Forel var. fumatus, new variety MALE.-Differing from the typical form in sculpture and color. The whole body, including the mandibles and antenne, opaque, the legs shining. Head black; mesonotum and dorsal and ventral surfaces of first to fourth gastric segments dark brown. Appendages, scutellum, epinotum, pleurae, petiole and tip of gaster.brownish yellow. Wings with dark brown veins and stigma (in the type much paler). A single specimen from Anioy (Light). This is probably the form seen by Bingham, who mentions a speci- men in the British Museum from Rangoon, Burma, as being darker and more punctured and as being probably only a variety. Ponerinm Odontoponera transversa F: Smith. Three workers from Back Liang (Light). Diacamma rugosum Le Guillou subsp. geometricum F. Smith.-One worker from Amoy (Light). Diacamma rugosum subsp. geometricum var. viridipurpureum Emery.-A single worker from Amoy (Light), agreeing with specimens from the Philippines, the type locality of this variety. -

Laos is one of the most undersampled areas for ant biodiversity. We begin to address this knowledge gap by presenting the first checklist of Laotian ants. The list is based on a literature review and on specimens col- lected from several localities in Laos. In total, 123 species with three additional subspecies in 47 genera belonging to nine subfamilies are listed, including 62 species recorded for the first time in the country. Comparisons with neighboring countries suggest that this list is still very incomplete. The provincial distribu- tion of ants within Laos also show that most species recorded are from Vien- tiane Province, the central part of Laos while the majority of other provinces have received very little, if any, ant sampling. -

Members of Formicinae, Myrmicinae and Dolichoderinae were reported from all habitats but members of subfamily Ponerinae, Aenictinae and Pseudomyrmicinae were only reported from grassland and forest habitats. A Genus Tetraponera is most diverse comprising three species then followed by Monomorium and Camponotus comprising two species each from the present study area were reported. Pakistan. 25120. *corresponding Author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Twenty-one species of ants, including nine new records from Pakistan were collected from residential colonies of Tarbela Power Station, Swabi. These species were classified into four subfamilies and thirteen genera. The most diverse genus was, Camponotus represented by four species i.e. Camponotus angusticollis Jerdon, 1851, Camponotus compressus Fabricius, 1787, Camponotus oblongus Forel, 1916, Camponotus sericeus Fabricius, 1798. Three species of Pheidole i.e. Pheidole binghami Forel, 1902, Pheidole sykesi and Pheidole sagei Forel, 1902, and two species each of Monomorium and Lepisiota i.e. Monomorium indicum Forel, 1902, Monomorium sagei Forel, 1890 and Lepisiota frauenfeldi Mayr, 1855, Lepisiota capensis Mayr, 1862 were reported in current study. Remaining ten genera i.e. Crematogaster, Meranoplus, Messor, Cataglyphis, Cardiocondyla, Aenictus, Polyrachis, Paratrechina, Nylanderia and Tapinoma were represented by single species each; Crematogaster subnuda Mayr,1878, Messor semirufus Smith, 1858, Cataglypus setipes Forel, 1894, Meranoplus bicolor Guerin-Meneville,1844, Cardiocondyla mauritanica Forel, 1890, Aenictus wroughtonii Forel,1890, Polyrachis hauxwelli Bingham, 1903, Paratrechina longicornis Latreille, 1802, Nylanderia indica (Forel, 1894) and Tapinoma indicum Forel (1895). The species first time recorded from Pakistan were Camponotus angusticollis, Lepisiota capensis, Messor semirufus, Pheidole sykesi, Monomorium sagei, Nylanderia indica and Tapinoma indicum.
