1 Home Group Study The Book of Philippians “Jesus Our Joy” Lesson Four Phil. 2:19-30 “Servants of Christ” A reporter in San Bernardino, California arranged for a man to be in the gutter on a busy street. Hundreds of people passed the man but not one stopped to help him or even show sympathy! Newspapers across the country a few years ago told how thirty-eight people watched a man stalk a young lady and finally attack her and none of the spectators even picked up a phone to call the police! A couple of teenagers in Detroit discovered a woman in a telephone booth who had suffered a heart attack. They carried her to a nearby house and rang the bell, asking for help. The only reply they received was, "Get off my porch and take her with you!" A Kentucky doctor was driving down the highway to visit a patient when he saw an accident take place. He stopped and gave aid to the injured and then made his visit. One of the drivers he helped sued him! Is it possible to be a "Good Samaritan" today? Must everybody harden his heart in order to protect himself? Perhaps "sacrifice and service" are ancient virtues that somehow do not fit into our so-called modern civilization. It is worth noting that even in Paul's day having concern for others was not a popular virtue. The Christians at Rome were not too interested in the problems at Philippi; Paul could not find one person among them willing to go to Philippi. -

Feel free to use what is helpful in this guide to lead you in discussion. Introduction Spend a few minutes answering an icebreaker question in your group. An example icebreaker question might be: “This day and age, we often communicate with phone calls, text messages, and emails, but for thousands of years, most people communicated through the writing of letters. Who is the last person you received a personal letter from, or wrote a personal letter to?” Explain that this question connects with our passage today, which is part of a letter Paul wrote to the church at Philippi. Today’s section of the letter, Philippians 2:17-30, discusses Paul’s itinerary and his fellow ministry companions. Although we might be tempted to overlook these types of sections in biblical letters, often these types of passages, full of details about companions and plans, have a lot to say to us about what it means to live the Christian life. On The Church Dr. Stan Fleming Introduction The word church: Somebody once said, “The world at its worst needs the church at its best.” 1 I. What is the Church? A. If you look up the word in a dictionary it might be defined as “a building that is used for Christian religious services”. The Greek word Kruiakon means “the Lord’s house” and the word church is associated with that, but it is also associated with the Greek word Ekklesia which means “the called out ones”. In the country of Greece, Ekklesia meant the idea of citizens called to assemble for legislative or other community purposes. 2 B. Strong’s (1577) ekklesia; a calling out , a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): - assembly, church. C. Current statistics on congregations and denominations 1. 4,629,000 Christian congregations 2. 44,000 denominations D. Mentioned in the New Testament 1. Church – 80 times 2. Churches – 37 times E. Old Testament concepts 1. Old Testament concepts: assembly, congregation; though the word synagogue is a New Testament word, the concept of the meeting places of Jews is in the Old Testament (Psalm 74:8) and is still used by Jews to this day. II. The New Testament and Basic Ideas about the Church A. Jesus introduces and concludes the use of the word church : 1. Matthew 16:18 “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” 2. Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. -

THE WITNESS OF PAPIAS In the preface to his five books of Exegesis of the Dominical Oracles (ap. Euseb. HE iii. 39), Papias says: “If ever anyone came who had kept company with the Elders, I would inquire about the words of the Elders: ‘What did Andrew or Peter, or Philip or Thomas or James, or John or Matthew or any other of the Lord’s disciples say? And what do Aristion and the Elder John, the Lord’s disciples, say?’” Most scholars to-day, following Eusebius, find two Johns in the fragment, and they may be right. Eusebius, to be sure, had an axe to grind, for he was glad to find a possible non-- apostolic author for the Apocalypse; but this cannot be said of such impartial scholars as Tregelles and Lightfoot, who also distinguished two Johns here. But the question is by no means closed. Against Tregelles and Lightfoot might be quoted Salmon and Zahn. Lawlor and Oulton, in their edition of Eusebius (1928), say in their note on this passage (Vol. ii. p. 112,): “But the reasoning of Eusebius seems unconvincing: and the argument of others who have reached the same conclusion on other lines is of doubtful validity (e.g. Schmiedel in Encyc. Bib., 2506ff.; Harnack, Chron. i. 660ff.).” And Professor C. J. Cadoux, who will not be suspected of conservative bias, writes in Ancient Smyrna (1938), p. -

Reflections Reflections Barnabas, His Gospel, and its Credibility Abdus Sattar Ghauri The name of Joseph Barnabas has never been strange or unknown to the scholars of the New Testament of the Bible; but his Gospel was scarcely known before the publication of the English Translation of ‘The Koran’ by George Sale, who introduced this ‘Gospel’ in the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ to his translation. Even then it remained beyond the access of Muslim Scholars owing to its non-availability in some language familiar to them. It was only after the publication of the English translation of the Gospel of Barnabas by Lonsdale and Laura Ragg from the Clarendon Press, Oxford in 1907, that some Muslim scholars could get an approach to it. Since then it has emerged as a matter of dispute, rather controversy, among Muslim and Christian scholars. In this article it would be endeavoured to make an objective study of the subject. I. BRIEF LIFE-SKETCH OF BARNABAS Joseph Barnabas was a Jew of the tribe of Levi 1 and of the Island of Cyprus ‘who became one of the earliest Christian disciples at Jerusalem.’ 2 His original name was Joseph and ‘he received from the Apostles the Aramaic surname Barnabas (...). Clement of Alexandria and Eusebius number him among the 72 (?70) disciples 3 mentioned in Luke 10:1. He first appears in Acts 4:36-37 as a fervent and well to do Christian who donated to the Church the proceeds from the sale of his property. 4 Although he was Cypriot by birth, he ‘seems to have been living in Jerusalem.’ 5 In the Christian Diaspora (dispersion) many Hellenists fled from Jerusalem and went to Antioch 6 of Syria. -

Romans SECTION OUTLINE ONE (ROMANS 1) Paul opens his letter to the Roman church by talking about God's anger with sin. The opening chapter may be thought of as a trial, where God is the judge and sinful humans are the accused. I. THE COURT RECORDER (1:1-17): Here Paul, author of Romans, provides his readers with some pretrial introductory material. A. His credentials (1:1, 5): Paul relates four facts about himself. 1. He is a servant of Jesus (1:1a). 2. He is an apostle (1:1b). 3. He has been set apart to preach the gospel (1:1c). 4. He is a missionary to the Gentiles (1:5). B. His Christ (1:2-4) 1. -

Titus 2:7 "…who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." Titus 2:14 "Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work." Titus 3:1 "The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works." Titus 3:8 "And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful." Titus 3:14 "One of the problems in the Cretan church is that they had assimilated their ideas about Jesus, the Christian God, to their ideas about their Greek gods…specifically Zeus, their chief god. Cretan people claimed that Zeus was born on their island and they loved to tell stories and mythologies about Zeus's underhanded character. He would seduce women and lie to get his way. So, Paul wants to very clear: the God revealed through Jesus is totally different than Zeus. His basic character are faithfulness and truth. Which means the Christian way of life will be about truth also."
