Our BOOK OF THE WEEK is The Center: A Modern Strategy Guide by Adrian Mikhalchishin & Georg Mohr. Everyone knows that it is important to control the center. However, the methods for center control and the implications for each type of center control are not as well known. The center is such a complicated topic to understand that two schools of chess (classical and hypermodern) debated each other for decades about the occupation of the center vs. piece pressure against the center. And that's just the start, understanding of the center has developed a lot since those debates, and understanding the center is as crucial as ever. The Center: A Modern Strategy Guide teaches you typical methods to fight for the center and what to do once you obtain it, categorized by typical themes and structures. -

I came from Croatia as 2100 rated player in 2002 and started my work in Kilkenny Chess Club with 4 juniors .One of them is now 2300 player and he just finished his University in Dublin . Since 2003 over 3000 children in their schools learnt how to play chess with me in their Elementary Schools . Not only that we had huge success in competitive chess but as well we did well to Educate our students and to teach them the most important thing – to think ! Despite having 14 Irish Junior Chess Championship , 2 British , 1 Women Fide master and FM I am most proud of the other benefits that Chess gave to my students ! At the moment I am teaching chess in few DEIS schools – disadvantage areas, schools with kids from average or not wealthy families . We found out that kids that play chess are more likely to improve nearly in all subjects but most importantly to socialize with kids from other ( higher social class, wealthier background etc.) schools . Not only that kids are playing chess but as well they are accepted and respected in community as people with great skill . -

The Instructor Tragicomedies in Pawn Endgames “Pawn endgames are rare birds in practice. Players avoid them, because they do not like them, because they do not understand them. It’s certainly no secret that pawn endings are ‘terra incognita’ - even for many masters, right up to the level of grandmasters and world champions.” N. Grigoriev Herewith, I offer proof that these words, spoken by a famous expert on pawn endings, are true. Without commentary, I give below the final moves of some actual games, and offer the readers the chance to comment on them, to uncover all the mistakes committed by both players. The endgames you will be dealing with here are not all that difficult; but still, the players on both sides have The provided you with plenty of opportunities for critical commentary. 1...Kf8 2.
