It assesses the constraints that limit travel between cities and townships by undertaking a small travel behavior survey and trip gen- eration/distribution model across four population centres, to observe how physical isolation from larger centres of social confluence can be reflected by lower trip volumes and associated increases in risks of social exclusion. The article’s method- ology makes use of limited information to identify where reductions in inter-island travel time can be proposed for people living in areas of greater relative transport, social and economic disadvantage, so that individual economic and personal travel opportunities can be made more accessible, reducing exclusion risks and promoting well-being.

  • Schism and the Ethics of Christian Strategy in the Philippines
The Boundary Indefinite: Schism and the Ethics of Christian Strategy in the Philippines by Scotty Mc Loughlin A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Anthropology) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Professor Webb Keane, Chair Assistant Professor Deirdre L. de la Cruz Professor Judith T. Irvine Professor Andrew J. Shryock Acknowledgements My thanks first of all, to those people in the Philippines, who helped me in big ways and small, who welcomed me and cared for me, pushing me to pay attention to things in my research that otherwise I would have missed. Nobody ever asked me to not use their name, but I have avoided where possible, for issues of privacy, the use of actual names. To Ofelia Estoya Aguilar, Angelito Quinones, Mikaela Venturina and her father, and Bobby, and to everyone involved in the churches that allowed me to work closely with them, and who opened up their lives to me in a way that I could only hope to one day do in return, I owe my deepest thanks. To Eunice, Joma, Kitty, Karl, and Kairos, and to Ninang, my eternal thanks for taking me in as a family member, and treating me with such kindness. And to Miguel Elausa, who tutored me in Tagalog, and subsequently became my closest friend and ally in Mindoro. This research would not have been possible without him. To the pastors and priests, the lay leaders, court clerks, and church administrators who helped, I am forever grateful. • From the People. but the People of Malindoc Killed Him, Together with 3 Spanish Companions
NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF SIBALE OR MAESTRE DE CAMPO 73 from the people. But the people of Malindoc killed him, together with 3 Spanish companions. As a punishment, Captain Luis de Haya was ordered by the Spanish Government to destroy the Islands of Malindoc and Banton, which was done. However, according to a report, dated June 1582, everything had apparently been reconstructed already, because it says: «The island of Banton lies about 1 league (= 5,3 km) from the island of Simara, or Cabras. Banton is about 8 leagues (44,5 km) in circumference and 3 leagues (= 16,7 km) wide, and has 200 people. The island is very craggy; it abounds in palm- trees, (sweet) potatoes, yams and wax. The people are traders… Donblon (= Romblon) is inhabited by nearly 250 people, and abounds in wax. This island and that of Banton come under the jurisdiction of the town of Arevalo (in Panay), and this is extended also over the islands of Sivahi (= Sibale), Similara, Buracay, Simara, Osaygan (= Tablas), (and) Sibuyan». A 1594 report about the area, mentions that « 250 tributos are collected from the people in Sibuyan and Cabras (= Simara), and 300 tributos are paid by the people of Vanton (Banton). But no one is giving religious instruction, and there is little hope of any christian teaching in the near future. Before 1635 Romblon, and the neighboring islands, belonged to the Curacy or Parish of Acju, or Aclang (now called Kalibo) on the island of Panay, under the Bishop of Cebu. The secular priest1 assigned to Romblon was Don Francisco Rodriguez Relator, whose task it was to go to the surrounding islands, up till Sibale, under dangerous circumstances, and at the risk of being captured by the Moros.
