MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • Tempers Flare As Rockies Overpower Braves 10-3
SPORTS SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 2014 MLB CAPSULES Tempers flare as Rockies overpower Braves 10-3 DENVER: Corey Dickerson hit Atlanta catcher Gerald Laird with his backswing and tempers quickly flared, setting off a tense sequence and leading to several ejections Thursday as the Colorado Rockies beat the Braves 10-3. The Rockies led 8-3 in the eighth inning when Dickerson knocked off Laird’s facemask with his swing - Dickerson said it was an accident. Laird was down for several minutes before walking off and being replaced by Evan Gattis. With his next pitch, Atlanta reliever David Carpenter hit Dickerson in the thigh and was ejected. Rockies manager Walt Weiss bolted from the dugout and began yelling at Carpenter, as well as in the general direction of Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. Weiss was held back by plate umpire Jordan Baker before being ejected. When he returned to the dugout, Weiss smashed a bat against the wall. In the ninth, Rockies reliever Nick Masset hit Gattis in the hip with a pitch. Both Masset and Rockies bench coach Tom Runnells were immediately tossed. Jhoulys Chacin (1-4) pitched seven scoreless innings. Ervin Santana (5-3) took the loss. TIGERS 4, WHITE SOX 0 Max Scherzer tossed a three-hitter in his first career complete game, and Victor Martinez hit his 16th homer to lead Detroit. Scherzer (8-2) was back in his 2013 Cy Young form, striking out eight and walking three while outdueling Chicago starter Chris Sale (5- 1). Only three times did the White Sox have COLORADO: Andrelton Simmons #19 of the Atlanta Braves leaps over Charlie Culberson #23 of the Colorado Rockies on a fielder’s men in scoring position.

THE REDS SPLIT THE DOUBLEHEADER DROPPING GAME ONE 5-2 AND WINNING GAME TWO 6-1. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Reds radio announcer Waite Hoyt died 30 years ago today Cincinnati Enquirer Waite Hoyt's happiest years were spent in Cincinnati. The popular Reds radio announcer from 1942-1965 was beloved by fans who cherished his play-by-play (always in the past tense) and his stories of being a teammate of Babe Ruth. Hoyt died 30 years ago today – Aug. 25, 1984 – just days shy of his 85th birthday. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, a relatively short distance from his late Yankees manager Miller Huggins. His widow Betty Hoyt told The Enquirer in 2012 Waite had a genuine appreciation for Reds fans and considered Cincinnati home. She said though Waite enjoyed more success elsewhere as a player, he was always happiest in Cincinnati. Waite and Betty lived in the Highland Towers in Mount Adams. They married on March 5, 1983. Betty, a 1943 Western Hills High School graduate, still lives in the West Side house she's had since 1964. She will turn 89 in September. Waite, who was the ace of the 1927 New York Yankees pitching staff, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. He won 237 games during his career. He identified most with the 1927 Murderers' Row team and believed it was the greatest squad ever put together.

Atlanta Braves Clippings Tuesday, May 26, 2015 Braves.com Masset stung by Dodgers' homer spree in 8th By Mark Bowman and Steve Bourbon / MLB.com | 1:24 AM ET LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers launched three home runs off reliever Nick Masset in the eighth inning to beat the Braves, 6-3, on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Trailing, 2-1, at the seventh-inning stretch, Los Angeles tied the game on an Adrian Gonzalez groundout in the seventh and Andre Ethier gave the Dodgers the lead the following inning with a solo shot to right-center field. Alex Guerrero and Jimmy Rollins followed suit with homers. Dodgers starter Brett Anderson earned a no-decision, despite pitching seven innings and allowing two runs. The Dodgers got to Atlanta's bullpen, putting up five runs after starter Williams Perez left the game. In just his second career start, Perez also received a no-decision, pitching six innings, allowing one run and striking out seven. "I think just some of my pitches flattened out," Masset said. "I've had some good battles with these guys in the past. They put some good swings on it. That's just how the ball rolls sometimes." MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Injury scare for Anderson: The Dodgers had another injury scare on the mound as Anderson was evaluated by trainers in the fifth inning. He threw a wild pitch and appeared to tweak his back, but stayed in the game after throwing three warmup pitches. The Dodgers have already lost two members of their Opening Day rotation to season-ending injuries.
