    Page | 1 HHC’s Covid-19 relief during the second wave JUNE 2021 Reported by Kul Mani, Phe Dorje and Priyasha Parajuli Compiled and edited by Soni KC Parajuli The Government of Nepal on 29 April announced a lockdown of Kathmandu valley as a public health measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and it has been extended till June 21, 2021. Dhading district, where HHC primarily works, did likewise. Many vulnerable families dependent on daily wages have lost their income due to the lockdown and have no food stock or savings and are desperate. Himalayan HealthCare has tried to respond appropriately but only in health care. As soon as the second phase lockdown was announced, we reached out to our six 6 rural municipal partners in Dhading district. They requested mainly for oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators as oxygen was in short supply in Nepal mostly because of importation from India. Pulse oximeter, hygiene kit which included masks, sanitizer, etc. and other essentials were on the list. While we began sending out appeal letter and few substantial donations started coming in, we immediately ordered 15 concentrators from Bionic Nepal a reliable partner of HHC since 20 years so that we could help fulfill the oxygen need for the more moderately and mildly ill patients. HHC also ordered oxygen cylinders, PPE, gloves, masks, soaps, digital thermometers, etc. through local suppliers in Kathmandu.     Dhaulagiri Journal of Sociology and Anthropology Vol. 14, 2020, PP. 61-68 61 Received: 2020-08-16 Accepted: 2020-12-02 Dalit Mainstreaming in Rural Development: An Alterna- tive Approach for Combating Poverty Rajan Binayek Pasa Lila Bahadur Bishwakarma Abstract This paper highlights a traditionally existed problem for an inclusive model of rural development through mobilization of all caste communities and local level social networking in different localities of Dhading District. An exclusive model where particular caste groups hold the vital post of the organizations and command and control the minorities, as a result, Dalits are still lacking far behind in rural developmental mainstreaming. A multidimensional approach was applied to enrich data, for example, semi-structured interviews in particular and focus group discussion (FGD), and informal communication in general. It was aimed to appraise the socio-cultural situatedness of Dalit, Dalit positioning in social networks, and Dalit mobilization towards rural developmental mainstreaming at the one hand. On the other, this study has attempted to way out an alternative approach that is 5Es (i.e., envisioning, educating, empowering, ensuring, and encouraging) model. It could itself monitor, control, and balance the rural development process. Hence, it is a holistic model to mainstream Dalit communities towards their own community development and mobilizing them towards rural development as/for social transformation. The 5Es is a term in which 5 denotes the number of letters of the term ‘Dalit’ and E denotes the fifth alpha- bet of A-Z. It principally refers to and focuses on envisioning Dalits’ socio-cultural context and vulnerability, educating Dalit children, empowering Dalit people, ensuring their rights and access, and encouraging them to be involved themselves as a way forward to Dalit mainstreaming to combat against poverty challenges.

Partner organisation The mission of AEMS (Asian Centre for Environment Management and Sustainable Development) is to establish a functional partnership among the countries of Asia having common environmental issues of development, and to ensure sharing of knowledge and technology. Its main objectives are (1) to carry out research activities on present day environmental degradation and its impacts, (2) to provide consulting services and to carry out trainings, seminars and workshops in national as well as international levels to address the issues of environmental concerns; (3) to carry out development and construction works regarding management of the environment and sustainability in development, (4) to establish national and international cooperation with educational institutions like universities involved in environmental management, and (5) to establish a resource center providing information on environmental and development programmes and projects.
