  • A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS Synopsis
A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS Based on the television special by Bill Melendez Synopsis One Act (55 minutes) Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and all your favorite Peanuts characters come together to retell a classic story about finding the true meaning of Christmas. It’s almost Christmas and the kids are enjoying the season. Well, everyone except for Charlie Brown. While the others ice skate, throw snowballs, and receive Christmas cards, Charlie Brown is feeling depressed about the holiday. Even Snoopy, dressed as Santa, is getting in on the fun. The kids catch snowflakes on their tongues (although Lucy informs the group she only eats January snow), create a snowman, and throw snowballs at a can (which Linus eventually knocks down with his blanket). But, in spite of all the merriment, Charlie Brown is still sad about Christmas. Charlie Brown decides he needs to talk to someone about his sorrow. He goes to see doctor Lucy. Lucy, after happily accepting his money for her service, asks Charlie Brown what he fears. He reveals that he’s feeling down about Christmas. Lucy’s remedy? Charlie Brown needs involvement and she finally convinces him to direct the Christmas play. Much to Charlie Brown’s dismay, Snoopy is decorating his doghouse for Christmas in an effort to win prize money. Meanwhile, Linus and Lucy are attempting to craft the perfect letter to Santa Claus. And, reluctantly, Charlie Brown even helps his little sister, Sally, write her letter to Santa. It’s Charlie Brown’s first rehearsal as director of the Christmas play. However, things quickly go awry.

Dolls gone fascist How Instagram account Barbie Fascionista satirized the Brazilian middle and upper classes Student Name: Ulisses Augusto Sawczuk da Silva Student Number: 491328 Word Count: 25723 Supervisor: Dr. Mélodine Sommier Master Media Studies - Media, Culture & Society Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master's Thesis 27 June 2019 DOLLS GONE FASCIST: HOW INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT BARBIE FASCIONISTA SATIRIZED THE BRAZILIAN MIDDLE AND UPPER CLASSES ABSTRACT Created during Brazil’s 2018 presidential election, Instagram account Barbie Fascionista published memetic images of the Barbie doll that were accompanied by captions and short texts in which the character expressed racist, classist, homophobic and sexist views, as well as her support for far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro. The profile – which was among several social media accounts that popularized the meme known as Fascist Barbie – quickly garnered more than 100,000 followers and received coverage from important Brazilian and foreign news outlets such as Folha de S. Paulo and Le Monde. Its main character – who represents a white, female, middle- or upper-class social media influencer – clearly satirizes Brazil’s affluent segments and engages with the polarized climate that permeated the 2018 election and divided the country between progressives and conservatives. Considering the increasing importance of digital artifacts such as memes for political debates and the significant sociopolitical moment that Brazil is going through, the study is based on the research question: How do the memetic images and texts published by Instagram account Barbie Fascionista portray the Brazilian middle and upper classes? Because the content of Barbie Fascionista features complex interconnections between written and visual texts, the investigation relies on a multimodal approach that combines two complementary research techniques – semiotic analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis.

  • Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Subjectivity In American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, The Body, The Grotesque, and The Child. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.
