Westport Center for Senior Activities

Summer 2021

Dear Friends and Participants:

It’s hard to believe that the Westport Center for Senior Activities has been mainly operating virtually for over a year. I continue to be so impressed and amazed with the creative programs that Program Manager Holly Betts and Assistant Program Coordina- tor Jason Wilson have developed over the past year. Our entire staff has shown tremendous dedication and resiliency in provid- ing services and supports to our community since the pandemic began. Through the support of the Friends, the WCSA has been able to offer themed drive-thru events and additional programs on Channel 79. I hope you’ve participated and enjoyed some of these fun activities.

Now it’s time to share the July – September newsletter which feature in-house, outside, hybrid and Zoom classes. With 93% of those 65+ living in Westport having had at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, with the positivity rate consistently trending downward, and with numerous restrictions being lifted throughout the State of CT, the WCSA is ready to enter the next phase of re-opening. Numerous precautions have been put in place to allow for the health and safety of our staff and par- ticipants including: Adding UV lights in the air-handling units which will sanitize the air as it passes through the system; con- structing a permanent canopy outside on the terrace to accommodate outdoor programs; limiting the number of participants in the WCSA at any given time; implementing 6 feet social distance protocols; removing some seating and furniture and asking participants not to congregate; applying one-way routes throughout the building and adding stanchions to assist with traffic flow where needed; requiring all staff and participants to wear masks that cover their nose and mouth; increasing the frequency of cleaning of the building and contact points; requiring participants to wipe down equipment after each use; providing hand- sanitizer and encouraging frequent hand washing. Through these measures, the WCSA is ready to re-open in a slow and safe manner. The WCSA will adhere to all CDC guidelines and recommendations as we acknowledge that those 60+ are most at risk and vulnerable to the virus.

Please help us keep our staff and instructors safe by: Wearing masks that cover your nose and mouth; staying home if you’re experiencing symptoms of any illness; staying home if you or any family member has been told to quarantine; maintaining a distance of at least six feet from staff and other participants; washing or sanitizing your hands frequently; exiting the facility promptly after your class or program; and following the instructions of the WCSA staff.

PLEASE NOTE: REGISTRATION WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ALL ACTIVITIES AND CLASSES BEING HELD IN-HOUSE AT THE WCSA UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY, THERE WILL BE NO WALK-INS OR DROP-INS ALLOWED.

We’re very excited to see you,

Sue Pfister, Director and the entire WCSA Team

CHOICES and Medicare Assistance Westport residents may request assistance from CHOICES certified counselors to help you with your ques- tions regarding Medicare coverage. Westport's "Hello, Neighbor" Program for Seniors! The Department of Human Services and the WCSA are offering two exciting community programs that connects caring volunteers with Westport seniors. "Hello, Neighbor" provides a warm commu- nity connection through weekly phone calls, encouraging fellowship, and combating loneliness. Phone calls are purely social and conversational. Get to know your neighbors! We are all in this together. Once paired, you can establish a mutually convenient time to chat with your volunteer partner. To sign up for calls, please click here to complete the request form or contact Jacqueline Corona, Nutrition Coordinator at 203.341.5097 or [email protected] for details. If you know of someone who would benefit from a friendly conversation, please let them know that many Westporters are ready to chat! Seniors and volun- teers can also sign-up for “Contactless Grocery Assistance for Seniors.” Westport seniors wishing for assis- tance with basic grocery runs now have a reliable and safe delivery option with a caring neighbor's help. No apps or membership fees, just simple acts of kindness to help when needed! Volunteer shoppers undergo a background check before being matched with a screened senior resident requesting assistance. To volunteer, request assistance, or to learn more, please go to www.westportct.gov/ helloneighbor or call Jacqueline Corona, Nutrition Program Coordinator at 203.341.5097.

Plan ahead before the power goes out! Summer in Connecticut can bring rain and wind storms that can cause power outages. The Red Cross website Click here (https://rdcrss.org/3uJXD7R) has helpful infor- mation on how to plan ahead before the power goes out. Make sure you have your phone contact list printed out and keep it in a safe place in case your cell phone battery dies and if you decide to leave your home to stay with family or friends, it is helpful to let a neighbor know you are leaving town. It is a good idea to keep your car gas tank at least half full and cell phones fully charged before the storm is predicted to arrive. Make sure you have flashlights, batteries and your medications. To get important local alerts, you can sign up for the town emergency alert system by texting 06880 to 888777 or sign up at https:// bit.ly/3o8iEXg. You can also sign up for the Town of Westport’s Emergency Registry by completing the form at this link:
