In 2009-10, the Wolves got off to an 0-3 start...and won the West Division. In 2011-12, the Wolves lost their first four games...and won the Midwest Division. In 2016-17, the Wolves REGULAR-SEASON SERIES 1-0-0-0 San Antonio | 0-1-0-0 Chicago lost their first three games while scoring just four goals...and went on to win the Central Division. In 2017-18, Rocky Thompson’s first year at the helm, the Wolves lost their first two games and went on LAST MEETING to win the Central again. Oct. 11, 2019 Get the picture? While it’s not exactly an official strategy to lose a few early in order to win a lot late, everyone in the American Hockey League (and in the Wolves locker room) understands it can be a process. This year’s edition of the Wolves doesn’t have as many proven players up and down its 3-0-0-0 0-2-0-0 lineup, which means it might take a little longer to build. AHLTV.COM DON’T SLEEP ON PITLICK 2020-21 During the Chicago Wolves’ fast start, a lot of attention has been paid to the team’s teenagers — which TALE OF THE TAPE makes sense because there are several of them and they’ve been plenty good through the first three REGULAR-SEASON SERIES games. But it’s not like the rest of the roster belongs to AARP. 0-1-0-0 Grand Rapids | 1-0-0-0 Chicago LAST MEETING Take center Rem Pitlick, for example. He made his NHL debut with the Nashville Predators on March Feb. 5, 2021 25, 2019 — shortly before his 22nd birthday. The Ottawa native then scored 20 goals in 63 games last year for the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals during his first year as a pro. Nashville’s 2016 third-round pick has served as head coach Ryan Warsofsky’s first-line center for all three games and has been terrific at both ends of the ice. Pitlick shares the American Hockey League 0-1-0-0 3-0-0-0 lead with three goals and has earned the game-winning goal in each of the last two games — both of them breakaway goals that looked remarkably similar. His game-winner Tuesday against Rockford LEADING SCORERS came on shorthanded when he pounced on a loose puck at the Wolves’ blue line. It defies logic, but it’s the truth: The Chicago Wolves keep losing important players, but they keep TALE OF THE TAPE winning important games. The latest example came Friday night as the Wolves knocked off the Texas REGULAR-SEASON SERIES Stars 4-1 despite playing without three of their top five scorers this season -- and losing their No. 6 4-2-0-0 San Antonio | 2-3-0-1 Chicago scorer during the third period. On the morning of Feb. 17, the Wolves woke up in third place in the Central Division. They owned 60 points, which was seven behind the front-running Grand Rapids Griffins and two behind the Iowa Wild. Since that time, the Wolves have lost defenseman Erik Brannstrom (trade), No. 1 AHL scorer Daniel Carr (injury), No. 4 AHL scorer Brooks Macek (injury), physical forward Stefan Matteau (injury) and 27-31-6-1 AHL plus-minus leader Gage Quinney (potential injury during Friday’s game). 38-19-5-3 LEADING SCORERS IN SERIES Nevertheless, the Wolves have produced an 11-2-0-2 record (.800) since Feb. 17 to vault past the Grif- fins and the Wild into first place in the Central Division. 2019-20 Chicago Wolves Game Notes IOWA AT CHICAGO NOVEMBER 16, 2019 7 P.M. MY50 CHICAGO HISTORY TENDS TO REPEAT 2019-20 Let’s start with the facts: The Chicago Wolves have dropped five of their last six games. It has been TALE OF THE TAPE a fortnight nobody has enjoyed. But it’s times like these when it’s important to note that tough REGULAR-SEASON SERIES stretches don’t seem to last for the Wolves. 1-0-0-1 Milwaukee | 1-1-0-0 Chicago LAST MEETING Take last year, for example. From Nov. 24 to Dec. 2, the Wolves went 0-4-1-0 and saw their record drop Nov. 7, 2019 to 10-9-2-1. In their next game, a Dec. 5 visit to Iowa, the Wolves fell behind 3-0. But Rocky Thompson’s squad clawed back and claimed a 4-3 overtime victory on a Nic Hague goal. That triggered a six-game winning streak and a 10-0-1-0 stretch that pointed the Wolves on their way to the Central Division title and (eventually) the Calder Cup Finals. 8-3-2-1 7-8-1-0 Need more historical evidence? In 2017-18, Thompson’s first season at the helm, the Wolves went L-L- L-L-L-SOL-OTL-OTL-W-L-OTL-L from Nov. 8 to Dec. 2. When the Wolves took to the ice on Dec. 6 against TOP SCORERS San Diego, they owned the worst record in the league at 5-11-4-1 (.375).
