Corresponding author Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Galerucella placida Baly is a small leaf beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. which feeds on aquatic weed Polygonum hydropiper Linn. The insect was reported from various regions of India during 1910-1936. Investigation on some biological parameters of G. placida and feeding of the P. hydropiper by G. placida was conducted in laboratory. The results indicated the fecundity of G. placida was 710-1210 eggs per female. Eggs were markedly bright yellow, pyriform basally rounded and oval at tip. It measured 0.67 mm in length and 0.46 mm in width. Average incubation period was 3.80 days. Larvae of G. placida underwent three moults. The first instar larva was yellow in colour and measured 1.26 mm in length and 0.40 mm in width. The second instar was yellowish in colour but after an hour of feeding, the colour of the grub changes to blackish brown from yellow. It measured 2.64 mm in length and 0.77 mm in width. The third instar measured 5.59 mm in length and 1.96 mm in width. The average total larval duration of G. placida was 13.30 days. The fully developed pupa looked black in colour and measured 4.58 mm in length and 2.37 mm in width. -

Hambäck Abstract Background: Wetlands are habitats where variation in soil moisture content and associated environmental condi- tions can strongly afect the survival of herbivorous insects by changing host plant quality and natural enemy densi- ties. In this study, we combined natural enemy exclusion experiments with random survival forest analyses to study the importance of local variation in host plant quality and predation by natural enemies on the egg and larval survival of the leaf beetle Galerucella sagittariae along a soil moisture gradient. Results: Our results showed that the exclusion of natural enemies substantially increased the survival probability of G. sagittariae eggs and larvae. Interestingly, the egg survival probability decreased with soil moisture content, while the larval survival probability instead increased with soil moisture content. For both the egg and larval survival, we found that host plant height, the number of eggs or larvae, and vegetation height explained more of the variation than the soil moisture gradient by itself. Moreover, host plant quality related variables, such as leaf nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus content did not infuence the survival of G. sagittariae eggs and larvae. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the soil moisture content is not an overarching factor that determines the interplay between factors related to host plant quality and factors relating to natural enemies on the survival of G. -

Issue 22 Newsletter: November 2010 ________________________________________________________________________________________ An unexpected leaf miner on White Poplar (Populus alba) _________________________________________________ On 30th October Martin Gray found a tentiform mine on White Poplar (Populus alba) at Saxilby, near Lincoln, Lincolnshire, VC54. The mine was lower surface, with the frass piled at one end of the mine (right photo) It was obviously a Phyllonorycter species and should have been Phyllonorycter comparella a known leaf miner on this host in the UK. Images © Martin Gray Wisely, Martin decided to open the mine to examine the pupa and was surprised to see that the cremaster had long spines, whereas the Populus Phyllonorycters in Britain (and Europe) have either tiny spines or no spines on the cremaster (as shown overleaf). John Langmaid was contacted and thought that the mine was probably Phyllonorycter salictella, as he had bred this species from P.alba previously. This has a cremaster similar to the one Martin found. The pupa is viable and will hopefully be bred out to identify the species. A return visit to the site where this mine was found confirmed the presence of Sallows (Salix caprea) nearby. This finding emphasises the need for caution in identifying Phyllonorycter species on Populus. The moths ideally should be bred out to confirm identity . Seventynine species of leaf-mining microlepidoptera are recorded from Bad Gleichenberg (Styria, Austria). The species inventory includes following new county records: Stigmella lapponica, Stigmella nivenburgensis (Nepticulidae), Caloptilia fidella, Parectopa robiniella (furthermore new for Burgenland), Phyllonorycter issikii, Phyllonorycter robiniella and Phyllonorycter stettinensis (Gracillariidae). Of particular interest is the first record of Phyllonorycter issikii south of the Alps, a species introduced from Japan to Europe and mining leaves of Tùia spp. Keywords: Lepidoptera, leaf-miner, Austria, Styria, faunistic records. Pendleton Introduction to Sherwood Forest Lepidoptera First edition 2009 One aspect of recording which has not changed since the 1800’s, is the lack of attention given by Lepidopterists to the site’s micro lepidoptera. Virtually all This publication is aimed at providing an accurate record of all Sherwood Forest micro records sourced from Carr’s book were attributed to R.E. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was studied at four constant tempera- tures (18, 22, 26, and 30°C) where Malus communis L. (apple, Stark Crimson) was used as food. Signifi- cant positive linear relationships were observed between development rate and temperature for all life stages. Minimum developmental threshold temperatures were estimated as 5.5–6.7°C for first stages, 5.8–5.7°C for second stages, 5.1–6.3°C for prepupae, and 8.1–6.3°C for pupae, male and female, respec- tively. Lower threshold of complete development of adult was estimated as 6.05°C (male) and 6.0°C (fe- male). Median development values of degree-days (DD) for first stages, second stages, prepupae, pupae and complete preimaginal development were 57.5–55.2, 55.2–66.2, 33.1–33.9, 137–175.4 and 476.2–526 for male and female, respectively. A degree-day model was developed using from the laboratory data for predicting the first emergence of the pest and spray application time. Estimated degree-day model predicted the emergence within 3–7 days of that observed at the field site in both 2001 and 2002. -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe.
