  • The Use of Internal and External “Fire and Heat Metaphors” in Some Rock Lyrics
STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY Department of English Do You Really Want to Set Me on Fire, My Love ? The Use of Internal and External “Fire and Heat Metaphors” in some Rock Lyrics Kalle Larsen Linguistic C-essay Spring 2006 Supervisor: Christina Alm-Arvius Abstract The aim of this study has been to investigate whether metaphors in terms of fire and heat in rock lyrics can be interpreted figuratively as well as literally. The terms for these latter two categories are internal and external metaphors . Many rock lyrics are about love, a theme often described with the use of metaphors. One common type of metaphorisation for describing love is to use what in this study has been called “fire and heat metaphors”. These are metaphors that as their source use FIRE and HEAT/WARMTH and map some of these qualities on to the metaphorical target LOVE, which results in metaphorical constructions like I am on fire . Internal and external metaphors are terms coined by Alm-Arvius (2003:78) and they serve the purpose of separating the metaphors that cannot be taken literally from those that can also be given a literal meaning in another context. The main aim of this study has been to investigate whether a set of chosen metaphorical constructions taken from different rock songs can also be interpreted literally in relation to another universe of discourse. Moreover, the semantic and syntactic structures of the metaphor examples have been outlined, and some theories why the constructions should be regarded as internal or external metaphors have been presented. A number of related underlying cognitive structures ( conceptual metaphors ) were identified in this study, and (BEING IN) LOVE IS (EXPERIENCING) HEAT/WARMTH is a structure that allows external metaphorical constructions.

  • Flanagan's Running Club – Issue 31
Flanagan's Running Club – Issue 31 Introduction The first rule of Flanagan's Running Club is everyone should be telling everyone they know about Flanagan's Running Club! After all, sharing is caring. Details of how to sign up is in the epilogue. There is no need to panic, there is no actual running involved, it is not a running club in that sense. The title is made up from extending the title of my favourite book – Flanagan’s Run by Tom McNab. So enjoy the read. On This Day – 10th February 1870 - The YWCA is founded in New York City. 1940 - Tom and Jerry make their debut with Puss Gets the Boot. 1996 - IBM supercomputer Deep Blue defeats Garry Kasparov in chess for the first time. It’s Feast of St. Paul's Shipwreck (Malta) Fenkil Day (Eritrea) 365 Reasons To Be Proud To Be A Londoner - Magical Moments in London's History What is the bestselling novel ever, in any language? Thankfully it’s not 50 Shades, but A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens (200 million copies sold). Dickens created some of the most memorable characters in literary history, including Oliver Twist, Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr Micawber, Miss Havisham and Uriah Heep. ‘Dickensian London’ has entered our imagination as a real place – not that you’d like to go there. And it was today in 1836 that Dickens’ first novel, The Pickwick Papers, was commissioned as a monthly serial. It was an immediate success, bringing the twenty-four-year-old writer instant fame. • Capturing Hip Hop Histories
capturing hip hop histories SOUTH-WEST HEADZ Master Blast Roadshow poster by Raz (Kilo), 1986. Photograph: Kilo. First published 2021 2021 Adam de Paor-Evans Cover graff by Remser Remser started writing in 1997 after seeing dubs and pieces by Sceo, Fixer, Teach, and G-Sane at the M5 pillar spot in Exeter. His school bus used to loop around Sannerville Way and the pieces could be seen from the road as well as the train. A couple of years prior to this, Remser’s mum randomly bought him a copy of Spraycan Art, and he knew straight away that it was something he wanted to be part of. In early 2000 he moved to London and hooked up with the DNK/CWR boys, they were way better than him and super-active but this experience pushed him to develop his style and learn about all aspects of graffiti writing. Respect and love to all of the South-West writers and hip hop headz, too many to mention but you know who you are! DNK CWR Waxnerds forever...
