Rose, Scott, Strobel, Sullivan, Sylvia VOLUME IX 2012-2013 Letter from the editor Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning. -Benjamin Franklin The 2013-2014 academic year will mark this journal’s tenth year of publication. I was first acquainted with the journal as a student author. I wrote a piece of memoir for a creative-nonfiction writing course, was encouraged to submit it for publication, and was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the twelve authors published in the inaugural volume of The Undergraduate Review (2003-2004). The following year I was recruited as a student editor, one of three, and then one of one, when the other two students went on to other endeavors. The journal’s “headquarters” was the Honors’ Center in the Academic Achievement Center. I had use of a communal computer, the coffee table, and as much floor space as I could commandeer. It was a great space, but we never expected the near three-fold increase in submissions to Volume II. An official designer was sought and hired to lay out the beefy 25-article, 230-page issue. Special considerations were made for cover design, contributor photos, and featured artwork. That same year, the journal found a permanent home in the Office of Undergraduate Research in Maxwell Library. The UR continued to grow, improve, and succeed, showcasing more of the finest scholarly and creative work offered by BSU students. The journal grew in girth as well as in scope, and more disciplines were represented with each iteration. Last year, a new two-reader, double-blind review process was piloted. Thanks to the dedication of over 65 faculty reviewers it was deemed a success, despite a whopping record of 52 submissions! We’re not done— still growing. We received a record-breaking number of submissions again this year. Over 65 BSU students submitted their work to the reviewers. Nearly every discipline on campus was represented. The research featured in this journal is some of the finest yet, testaments to the wealth of knowledge, experience, and talent of BSU students and faculty. I am amazed by the tremendous growth, reach, and success this journal has achieved in such a short period of time. Croll (1969-2013) All of us who knew Erik Croll—as a friend, classmate, student, researcher, or fellow traveler—were shocked and saddened to hear of his death on April 9, at just 43 years old. Erik is survived by his wife Lori, his mother Lucille, his father and stepmother David and Lynne, his brother Robert, and his parents-in-law Gordon and Joan. This volume of The Undergraduate Review is dedicated to his memory. As an avid sailor, scuba diver, underwater photographer, and fisherman, Erik had a personal investment in water resource protection. And as a non-traditional student who returned to college after many years of working in maritime trades, he applied his interest in water and wetlands protection to studying hydrology at BSU. It was his Study Tour experience in Cambodia with Dr. Kevin Curry, Professor of Biological Sciences, in 2012, though, that truly committed Erik to work for water resource protection and to help address the immense need for access to safe drinking water around the world. As Erik put it,”Meeting impoverished but hopeful families in rural Cambodian villages really cemented within me that I want to use the science I am learning at Bridgewater State to actually make differences in the environment.” In the research paper he wrote after that experience, “Hydrogeologic Analysis Critical to Sustainable Development in the Kingdom of Cambodia,” he explained the fundamental importance of geological conditions in meeting that country’s challenges of water-resource management. Erik’s deep concern for people in Cambodia without access to clean drinking water led him to return to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in January 2013 to continue his research and work for sustainable, safe water resources. On that research trip, he focused on the geological conditions of the Kbal Spean River and Siem Reap River, both within the Tonle Sap Watershed—a setting with particular complexities created by the influx of tourists to Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, visited by nearly two million people a year. Erik’s study, unfortunately incomplete because of his sudden death, may nonetheless inform future studies on the efficacy and sustainability of clean drinking-water initiatives in the Tonle Sap Watershed. Erik’s research last summer (published in this journal), mentored by Dr. Richard Enright, Professor of Geological Sciences, and funded by BSU’s Center for Sustainability, brought his commitment to safe drinking water close to home: to the public water supply in Marshfield, Massachusetts. The magnitude of this water resource issue is evident to several constituent groups with whom Erik shared his findings, many of whom urged him to continue collecting data and reporting the findings long after his summer research officially finished. Erik’s data will undoubtedly help to minimize environmental impacts upon the Furnace Brook watershed in Marshfield and maximize the use of the town’s water resources as a safe drinking-water supply—results that benefit the 25,000 residents of Marshfield and countless others whose communities are likewise working to safeguard water supplies. K. Varis Second Reader: Dr. I. E. L. Maly August 18, 2017 Synopsis In this thesis, I follow an online community on Tumblr revolving around a self- proclaimed conspiracy theory called TJLC. This group is part of the broader community of fans of the BBC TV show Sherlock, and is focused on ‘The Johnlock Conspiracy’: the belief that the two main characters of the show, John and Sherlock, are bisexual and gay, respectively, and will ultimately end up as a romantic couple, which would make Sherlock a mainstream TV show with explicit and positive LGBTQIA+ representation. This visibility is especially important to LGBTQIA+ individuals within the TJLC community, who want to see their identities more often and more accurately represented on television. The fact that the creators of Sherlock, as well as several of the actors in the show, are either part of the LGBTQIA+ community themselves or known supporters, works to further strengthen TJLC’ers’ trust in the inevitable unfolding of the story into a romantic plot. The fact that the TJLC community is based on a conspiracy theory not only makes it a remarkable example of fan culture, but has also led to many close readings of the show and its characters – from the textual level to symbolism to the musical score – on a level that can often be seen as close to academic. These pieces of so-called ‘meta’ have led to many predictions about the direction of the show, such as the strong belief that ‘Johnlock’ would become real in season four of the series.

    d “nOt YOuR GRandFatHeR’S ­ SHeRlOCk HOlMeS”: ­ Guy Ritchie’s 21st Century Reboot of a ­ 19th Century british Icon ­ Ashley Liening Sherlock Holmes “has enjoyed the most vigorous afterlife of any fictional character” posits thomas leitch, adaptation scholar and author of Film Adaptation and Its Discontents (leitch 207). Indeed, a franchise has been built around Sir arthur Conan doyle’s quirky detective, so much so that Sherlock Holmes has become one of the most adapted literary figures of all time, outnumbered only by Frankenstein’s monster, tarzan, and dracula (207). Clare Parody asserts, “Franchise practice has produced and surrounded some of the highest grossing and best-known fictional texts, characters, plots, and worlds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,” and Sherlock Holmes is no exception (211). From 1900 till the present day, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by “nearly 100 actors, in over 200 films, from more than a dozen different countries,” and it does not appear like “Sir arthur Conan doyle’s violin- playing, pipe-smoking, cocaine-injecting sleuth” is going any- where anytime soon (Cook 31). In fact, the twenty-first century has experienced a resurgence in more “straightforward” Holmes adaptations, namely bbC’s Sherlock (2010), which aired in three ninety-minute episodes and portrays a tech-savvy twenty-first century Holmes, and Guy Ritchie’s 2009 and 2011 35 ­ big screen adaptations, the latter of which will be the focus of this essay. I aim to explore the ways in which Guy Ritchie’s Sher­ lock Holmes (2009) adaptation, while inextricably bound to Conan doyle’s storytelling franchise, diverges from its prede- cessors in that it is not an amalgamation of other Holmes adap- tations.

The writer uses nine episodes of SHERLOCK BBC TV series which is written by Mark Gatiss as unit analysis in this research. In addition, this TV series is a worldwide prominent adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‟s work of Sherlock Holmes. This research emphasizes on character analysis of the main character, Sherlock Holmes and examine the psychological problem in his self psyche, id, ego and superego that is portrayed by his obsession with crime solving. Thus, the writer collects the data from dialogues in the series and takes screenshots of several scenes related with the analysis, then examines them using psychoanalysis theory established by Sigmund Freud. The result of this research is that Sherlock Holmes suffers anxiety as result of his traumas and unpleasing childhood experience, which are losing his Pomeranian dog pet when he was child, his mother‟s position in his family and being underestimated by his older brother as stupid boy. Consequently, his id has strong demand to prove that he is smart and control his superego to be passive.

The data was taken from the utterance of the characters in “Sherlock: A Study in Pink”. The observation method is used in collecting the data since the data are obtained from spoken source like movie. The/ method and technique of analyzing data used in this study was descriptive qualitative method. By applying Grice's cooperative principle and his theories on flouting and theory of Context of Situation by Halliday and Hassan (1985), certain conversations show recurring uses of flouts and the reason by context of situation. From the analysis, the most flouted maxim from the collected data is maxim of relation and the least flouted maxim is maxim of quantity and quality. There are several utterances that has flouted more than one maxim. Another point is about the context of situation behind the flouting maxim occurred in the data. There are several context of situation that make the characters flouted the maxim based on the analysis.

Through a thematic analysis focusing on the subjects we have called “The Antagonist in Motion” and “Homoerocity and emotions in BBC’s Sherlock”, the project concludes the following: the film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows creates a much more contrastive relationship between villain and hero, which can be seen as a way of incorporating the social class dynamics of Conan Doyle’s original text. However, in adapting this dynamic for a 21st century audience, the villain of Moriarty is first and foremost portrayed as a corrupt businessman rather than an elitist socialite or plain revengeful evildoer. In the BBC series the characters of Sherlock and Jim share an intimate relationship due to their many likenesses. Jim is a fluid character that navigates both gender, sexuality and personality. As a villain Jim is presented as a seductive psychopath that has no desire of money or power but has an ultimate goal of breaking Sherlock.
