FC Bayern München will be determined to put their surprise defeat on matchday two behind them when they travel to northern France to meet a LOSC Lille team seeking improvement themselves having lost both their opening fixtures. • Last time out Bayern went down 3-1 at FC BATE Borisov having started with a 2-1 home victory against Valencia CF. LOSC were beaten 3-1 at home by BATE, their heaviest home European defeat, and then 2-0 away to Valencia. They are already three points adrift at the foot of Group F. Match background • While the teams are meeting for the first time, this is Bayern's 30th contest against French opponents. Their record is W15 D5 L9 (W5 D3 L6 away). • The German side have won on their last two trips to France and their last four games against clubs overall, scoring eight goals without reply. Last season they defeated Olympique de Marseille 2-0 home and away in the quarter-finals and overcame Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 at home and 3-0 away in the 2009/10 semi-finals. • Bayern lifted their third European Cup by defeating AS Saint-Étienne 1-0 in the 1975/76 final, Franz Roth the scorer. They also beat FC Girondins de Bordeaux 5-1 on aggregate to lift the 1995/96 UEFA Cup. • The German club are hoping to go one step further than last season when they reached the final at their own Fußball Arena München, only to lose on penalties to Chelsea FC. Away from home in the group stage they beat Villarreal CF 2-0, drew 1-1 at SSC Napoli and lost 2-0 at Manchester City FC. The 2-0 win at Marseille was their only victory on their travels in the knockout rounds; they lost 1-0 at FC Basel 1893 and 2-1 at Real Madrid CF. • A 1-0 first-leg defeat at FC København in the play-offs means LOSC have lost three of their four UEFA Champions League games this season. • The French club have lost their last two fixtures with Bundesliga sides. They have drawn two and won just one of their five matches against German opposition – 1-0 against VfB Stuttgart in the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup final, when they lost the second leg 2-0 away. At home their record is W1 D1 L0. Team ties • Salomon Kalou started Chelsea's final victory against Bayern in May, going off after 84 minutes. • Franck Ribéry played for Olympique de Marseille from 2005 to 2007 having spent 2004/05 at FC Metz, recording a draw and two defeats at LOSC. He earlier played for US Boulogne, Olympique Alès and . • Substitute David Rozehnal scored in the Czech Republic's 3-1 friendly win against a Belgium side containing Daniel Van Buyten in Teplice on 12 August 2009. • Ribéry plays with Mickaël Landreau, , Benoît Pedretti, Rio Mavuba, Marvin Martin and Dimitri Payet for France. • Debuchy and Ribéry's France recorded a 2-1 friendly win against a Germany team including Jérôme Boateng, Holger Badstuber, Toni Kroos, Mario Gomez and Thomas Müller on 29 February 2012. • Debuchy, Ribéry and Martin all appeared in France's 2-0 victory against Anatoliy Tymoshchuk's Ukraine in a UEFA EURO 2012 group match at the , , on 15 June. • Tymoshchuk had put Ukraine in front in a friendly against France at the same stadium on 6 June 2011 but substitute Martin scored twice as the visitors came back to win 4-1; Ribéry also came on. • Matthias Sammer, Bayern's sporting director, was coach of Borussia Dortmund as they beat LOSC on away goals after a 1-1 aggregate draw in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup fourth round. • Van Buyten faced LOSC three times while at Marseille between 2001-04, winning one match. FARE Action Week • Matchday three of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League will contribute to the fight against all forms of discrimination in football stadiums as UEFA gives its full support to Europe's biggest anti-discrimination campaign – the FARE Action Week. Forty matches across the competitions on 23, 24 and 25 October will restate UEFA's commitment to ensuring that European football is free of racism, intolerance and xenophobia.

LOSC UEFA Champions League statistics • LOSC have won just three of their 14 UEFA Champions League home games to date. • Mathieu Debuchy serves a one-game ban following his red card on matchday two. International duty • Six LOSC players were on senior international duty last week: Debuchy, Mickaël Landreau (France), Idrissa Gueye (Senegal), Ryan Mendes (Cape Verde), Aurélien Chedjou (Cameroon) and Marko Baša (Montenegro). • Mendes came on as a substitute as Cape Verde lost 2-1 to Cameroon, nevertheless advancing 3-2 on aggregate to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations; Chedjou was an unused substitute. • Lucas Digne, 19, received his first call-up by France but missed their UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off defeat by Norway with a knee injury. Miscellaneous • Captain Rio Mavuba is expected to miss the rest of the group stage after suffering meniscus damage during LOSC's 2-0 defeat at Stade Rennais FC on 28 September. • LOSC beat AC Ajaccio 2-0 on 6 October to end a six-game winless run – their worst sequence since April/May 2009. • LOSC moved into their new stadium over the summer, the 50,000-seater Grand Stade Lille Métropole. It is 2km from their former home, the 18,000-capacity Stade Lille Métropole. Bayern UEFA Champions League statistics • Bayern have scored 497 goals in the European Cup. • Bayern have enjoyed an average of 68% ball possession in their first two fixtures, the joint highest in the competition along with FC Barcelona. International duty • Fifteen Bayern players were on senior duty during the international break: Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber, Jérôme Boateng, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos (Germany), Javi Martínez (Spain), Franck Ribéry (France), Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland), Daniel Van Buyten (Belgium), Mario Mandžukić (Croatia), Anatoliy Tymoshchuk (Ukraine), David Alaba (Austria) and Claudio Pizarro (Peru). • Kroos struck twice in a 6-1 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory in the Republic of Ireland on 12 October, but Bayern's seven-strong Germany contingent were disappointed four days later as Sweden came from 4-0 down to draw 4-4. • Alaba marked his first competitive appearance of the season following a foot injury with a goal on 16 October as Austria triumphed 4-0 against Kazakhstan. He came on against Fortuna Düsseldorf 1895 on Saturday. • Mandžukić struck Croatia's opener in a 2-0 win against Wales on 16 October. • Arjen Robben was left out of the Netherlands squad because of muscular problems. FC Kaiserslautern (2001/02) and 1. FSV Mainz 05 (2010/11). • Bayern's 2-1 win against Valencia CF on matchday one was their sixth in as many games in 2012/13. The last time they began the season with six successive victories, in 2000/01, they claimed the UEFA Champions League. • Pizarro made his 337th Bundesliga appearance in the 3-0 win against Wolfsburg on 25 September, a record for a foreign player in the German top flight. LOSC Lille: Rudi Garcia Date of birth: 20 February 1964 Nationality: French Playing career: LOSC Lille, SM Caen, FC Martigues Coaching career: AS Corbeil-Essonnes (player-coach), AS Saint-Étienne, Dijon FCO, Le Mans UC 72, LOSC Lille • The son of former LOSC player José Garcia, Rudi grew up in the Paris suburbs but started his playing career as an attacking at his father's old club. Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) and Martigues (1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching. • Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonne, whom he had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Etienne in 1998. • Worked as head coach for the first time in tandem with Jean-Guy Wallemme from January 2001 but the pair did not last long. Garcia re-emerged at the helm of Dijon in 2002, winning promotion to in 2003/04 and taking the club to the French Cup semi-finals. • Spent five years at Dijon before returning to Ligue 1 as coach of Le Mans in 2007; led the club to a ninth-placed finish in his only season in charge. • Brought to Lille as Claude Puel's successor in 2008, he briefly left after a fifth-placed finish in his first season only to be brought back into the fold. His side topped Ligue 1 at the turn of 2011, making them winter champions for the first time since 1949, and went on to take their third league title – and first since 1954 – before completing a domestic double with victory in the Coupe de France.

FC Bayern München: Jupp Heynckes Date of birth: 9 May 1945 Nationality: German Playing career: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice), Hannover 96 Coaching career: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (twice), FC Bayern München (three times), Athletic Club (twice), Eintracht Frankfurt, CD Tenerife, Real Madrid CF, SL Benfica, FC Schalke 04, Bayer 04 Leverkusen • One of the best strikers in Bundesliga history, Heynckes hit 220 goals in 369 games for Mönchengladbach and Hannover between 1964 and 1978; won four titles and a German Cup with Mönchengladbach and was the league's top scorer in 1974 (30 goals) and 1975 (27). • Aged 34, replaced Udo Lattek as Mönchengladbach coach in 1979; mentored the young Lothar Matthäus but failed to win any trophies, losing to FC Bayern München in the 1983/84 German Cup final and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals three seasons later. • Replaced Lattek again in 1987, this time at Bayern, winning 1989 and 1990 titles; club general manager Uli Hoeness called his decision to sack Heynckes in October 1991 "the biggest mistake of my career". • Moved to Spain, earning Athletic a place in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup. His Tenerife side reached 1996/97 UEFA Cup semi-finals, earning Heynckes a season at Madrid, whom he led to glory in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League but left that summer. • Stepped in as caretaker manager at Bayern in April 2009 following Jürgen Klinsmann's dismissal; replaced Bruno Labbadia as Leverkusen coach that summer and began season with a German record run of 24 Bundesliga games unbeaten. His side finished second to Borussia Dortmund in 2010/11 before Heynckes left to take charge of Bayern for a third time, reaching the 2012 UEFA Champions League final at their Fußball Arena München but losing 4-3 to Chelsea FC on penalties.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only two teams have failed to score in a group stage: RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2004/05 and Maccabi Haifa FC in 2009/10. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest goals against total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
