Front cover design: Jonty Shenvill - www.sherwilldesian.com - 01329 835555 Patience. Care and Understanding Being patient is not everyone's cup of tea; likewise, caring is something we all should be able to do, caring for one's family, caring for our neighbours and friends; understanding, a much understated word, which is perhaps more difficult than patience and caring. We are all, in this community required to think carefully about PCU.

As I write this letter we have travelled through the seven Sundays of Easter, enjoying Ascension Day on the way. St Peter's was the venue for the Deanery Ascension Day Service, a choir of 60 singers, a large congregation. We were delighted to have with us Bishop Timothy Bavin, a former Bishop of Portsmouth, who preached a superb sermon. We have also experienced Pentecost(Whit Sunday)and Trinity Sunday, which was also the Patronal Festival at Holy Trinity - exciting times in the church.

I listened to the radio news this morning, the story of another aircraft crashing into the Mediterranean Sea with the loss of sixty lives. We await news of the cause of the crash. I really do wonder what society is coming to. The loss of lives brought about by terrorists is horrendous. We remember in our prayers all those who lost their lives in this current tragedy, their families who are bereaved and all who mourn their loss.

In today's paper we read that Justice Lowell Goddard, who is leading the public inquiry into sexual abuse in institutions is likely to uncover 30,000 new reports of child sexual offences. This is a huge shock for the society in which we live. If this is true there will be 30,000 very damaged lives to repair.

On a much brighter note, Jo & I were invited to attend the service of Thanksgiving for Her Majesty the Queen's 90^'' birthday in Winchester Cathedral, a really uplifting experience; the music was wonderful, the words spoken about the Queen's Life amongst us were memorable. In our Benefice we are planning a service at St Peter's on Sunday 12*^^ June to give our thanks for the Queen's life. The service will start at 1000 and all are welcome.

I really must remind readers that we are in the season of Fetes -Holy Trinity will have had theirs (28*'^ May) before you read this, thank you to all who organised and planned the day. Qn Saturday 25*^ June it will be St Peter's turn - we look forward to welcoming you all to Church Green.

Qur Benefice has almost completed the Parish Profile which will be used to inform candidates for our vacancy about us. The Profile team have worked very hard over the last few weeks. You maybe wondering what next- there is due process to be followed before any further information can be given.

Perhaps this is where Patience, Care and Understanding come to the front of our minds - we must be patient about the process, we must care for all in our parishes, and we must try to understand that "Waiting and Watching" is good for the soul.

I want to repeat my invitation given in the last Magazine - by offering a warm invitation to you all to join us in our weekly services (see the Calendar for full details) You will be very welcome. Soberton & Newtown Wives'Group

For our April meeting we were much entertained by hearing about Eleanor Richardson's experience as a nun in the 1960's. In May we learned about the amazing help provided by the dogs from Canine Partners, giving those in need greater independence.

The next meeting is the AGM on 1st June. This will now take place in the Glebe House, Soberton. The annual progressive supper is on 4^ June.

The last event of the year, on 7^ July, is a visit to Hambledon House Gardens. Partners are very welcome, as usual.

RBL Droxford & At 0730 on 1^* July 1916, after an intense artillery bombardment,60,000 British District Branch Troops commenced an assault of the German lines north of the River Somme in Picardy. Thus began the largest, bloodiest battle in the history of the British Army; by noon 100,000 men had been committed and by nightfall 57,470 were casualties. The THE ROYAL BRITISH Battle of the Somme, which embraced a number of smaller battles, lasted until 18**^ LEGION November 1916 and involved 51 British Empire and 48 French divisions. From a military perspective, having advanced some 6 miles along a 15 mile front in AVz months, the battle was an Allied success and the first ever modern 'all arms' battle that used aircraft and tanks as well as infantry and artillery. Of more than a million Allied casulties, 419,654 were from the British Empire of which 95,675 died. We will remember them. www.soberton.orq 100 years ago,,. In the wake of March's excellent talk on Shackleton's Antarctic expedition, Rear-Admiral Nick Lambert entertained us on 9"^ May with his experiences patrolling the Southern Ocean in command of HMS Endurance. The Endurance was the 2"'' Royal Navy Ice Patrol Vessel to bear the name of Shackleton's ship, her predecessor having achieved fame during the 1982 Falklands conflict. The Nott Defence Review of 1981 had announced withdrawing the 1®' HMS Endurance from service and this was thought to have emboldened the Argentine Junta into invading the Falkland Islands. This reinforced the importance of maintaining a dedicated presence in the region and HMS Endurance was not only retained and replaced but has now been superseded by HMS Protector. The role of the Royal Navy's ice patrol vessel is to provide a UK sovereign presence in the British Antarctic Territory, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and their surrounding maritime areas; to underpin their security and good governance; to meet the UK treaty obligations and exercise rights under the Antarctic Treaty System through inspections, hydrographic charting and support to scientific research. The naval presence bolsters the British Antarctic Survey, whose rumored naming of a new ice breaker Boaty McBoatface was the cause of recent controversy! At up to 3 times the size of continental USA, Antarctica contains 90% of the world's ice and 70% of its fresh water. The continent rises to 12,000 feet above sea level and actually doubles in size during the winter months with ice sheets of up to 4 km in thickness. The life and work of HMS Endurance, her 2 Lynx helicopters and ship's company of 120 was vividly illustrated by a series of slides and film clips, showing the awesome beauty of Antarctica and the treacherous conditions that continue to challenge and fascinate mankind in equal measure. Following our annual Summer Drinks Party on Thursday 2"" June (at which prospective members and guests of members will also be welcome), branch meetings will cease until 1900 on Monday 12"^ September. Commodore Inga Kennedy, Matron-in-Chief of Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service will then be speaking to us on The Evolution of Naval Nursing, Crimea to Afghanistan - and beyond. Again, non-members will be extremely welcome.

The RBL Droxford & District Branch is aiways looking for new members, both Service and civilian, to help keep remembrance alive and support our Servicemen and women, veterans and their families. Signed: Date Brownie Report - April 2016

Phew!! When you look back at the year, you can really see just how many Brownie Adventures we have managed to fit in! We took full advantage of the summer weather last year, taking the girls out on a walk around Bishops Waltham, pond dipping at Meonwood and attempting to pitch a tent indoors at the Cotswold Clothing company in Hedge End. We worked hard to complete our Artist and Seasons badges, and began on our Out and About Badge.

The Autumn Term saw the Brownies participate in many community events such as the Harvest Festival, Remembrance Service and the Ploughman's Lunch. At the Harvest Festival, the girls wrote their own prayers to be read in church. The Ploughman's Lunch was particularly special, as we displayed a range of original 1930's badges owned by Helen Stiggants, a local lady who devoted so much of her time to the Soberton Guide Unit. The Neal Family at Russells Farm, kindly donated the badges and memorabilia which were found sealed away in a cupboard. Most excitingly, we also have the original bronze Guide Flag standard, which were all proudly displayed at the Lunch. The girls brought back further memories by singing old Guide songs for the entertainment. The year ended with our usual carol singing in the wet and cold. We raised £100 for GUll, a charity that uses equine care to assist people with life changing situations. Thank you to all the parents who chaperoned, all the people who donated and The Rogers Family who open their doors to a wet rabble! The Spring Term has been a cultural experience! We celebrated Burns Night and ate our way through 6 haggis! The girls loved it!! and we refrained from mentioning that it used to be made with offal and cooked in a sheep stomach! Chinese New Year again involved food. Several girls were very brave in their first taste of won-tons, spring rolls and prawn crackers. Our unit has taken on the Zany Zebra challenge Badge, involving activities and games concerning the conservation of the Grevy's Zebra. To end the term, we had our campfire at Meonwood, which involved the biggest marshmallows that I have ever seen! To tempt you with the term ahead, we are ever so excited to offer the girls a trip to a local farm, a trip to GUL for an equine experience, and a visit to Rock-Up to test their climbing abilities. And somehow, we will find time to complete our Sports Badge!

Numbers have remained at 15 girls, so if your daughter is aged 7-10 and likes the sound of our Brownie Adventures then please get in touch! Victoria Rogers has completed her Young Leaders Qualification and continued to seek new challenges! Hannah Barfoot who has helped for a number of years, unfortunately had to leave us at the end of the Spring Term due to work commitments. We would like to thank her for all her time and effort. She is missed by the girls and the Team alike. Katie Rogers and Grace Parker continue to offer their support as Brownie Helpers. As I am due to take my third maternity break at the end of this term, I am putting the call out to any person who feels stimulated enough by this article to ask what you can do for Guiding, and what Guiding can do for YOU! Please contact us if you have any spare time, even if it is just an hour, to devote to our Brownie Adventures.

Mandy Cleeve - Tawny Owl, 1st Soberton & Newtown Brownie Pack Guide Report- April 2016

Our numbers increased to 4 in the Summer term last year, with a new Guide from outside the area. We continued to meet fortnightly and participate in group events with the Brownies including a Town Walk in Bishops Waltham. We also went on a cycle ride to Wickham for ice cream, and finished our term with one big water fight with the older brownies.

The new school year bought many changes -6 new recruits from Brownies, and a previous brownie who went to a different Guide unit returning to join us, swelling the numbers to 10. We also had a new helper, Lucy Ward, who is doing her Volunteering for the Silver DofE . Karen Tumock also moved back to Guides to support me with the numbers. We have been very lucky that her work schedule has slotted into our meeting pattern. The girls worked on Guide Go-for-its, and took part in the Division Incident Hike where they earned their Active Response badge as they walked from St Peter's Soberton to Meonwood. We are very gratefixl to Sue for letting 60 guides use the field and campfire, and Louise for allowing them to start on the Church Green. The Guide continued to join the Brownies for some events, including Harvest Festival, Remembrance Srmday, Guide Hut Ploughman's lunch and Carol Singing at Christmas. All in all, the autumn was very busy term.

The Spring term again bought changes - With so many Guides it was not proving very successful with the half-hour overlap so we have changed our times to 7 til 8.30 continuing directly on from brownies. We also had 3 morej;e£ruits bringing our numbers to 13! We also have a new helper - Victoria Rogers, who wlfbe working with the Guides as well as Brownies. Victoria completed her YoungT^eaders Qualification and is now working on her Queen's Guide and her Gold D ofE Av(^rd and therefore expanding her leadership experience with us. /

This term we have been looking at the different celebrations: Bums Night, Chinese New Year and World Thinking Day. Many of the Guides took part in the Divisional Sleepover for Thinking day in February, and were introduced to the Guides Zebra Sculpture - Vallery. We starting working on our Zany Zebra Challenge Badge, raising awareness of the endangered Grevy's Zebra. Meon 'Vallery' is part of the Zebra Trail Marwell Zoo are organising in the summer in (similar to the Rhino trail two years ago). The Guides across the division have designed interest badges for Vallery to wear on her Guide shirt and she will be on display with the other small sculptures in the Marland's shopping centre in Southampton from 16* July.

Over the Summer term we hope to complete our Zany Zebra challenge badge, have some promise ceremonies, join the Brownies for some additional adventures, help at the villages fetes and join in for the Queen's Birthday Street party. But we have only 8 meetings before we break up, so again we are going to be busy.

Congratulations go to Katie Rogers, who has been awarded her Baden Powell Challenge. This is the highest award for a guide and takes commitment and perseverance to complete - Well Done Katie!

I have also taken on a new role from February this year - Meon Valley Division Commissioner. This has proved to be a challenging experience and I have a lot to leam as I now deal with all members of the Guiding family, from rainbows to the trefoil guild, and all aspects of running a division. I suspect it will take a few more months before I feel confident as Commissioner but I have support from all the leaders in the Meon Valley and of course our County Commissioner.

We look forward to another exciting year and a whole lot of new challenges - til next time Caroline Rogers Guide Leader Are you concerned about SPEEDING Newtown & Soberton through our villages? With the support of our local Police team, we are starting an RBEEDWATCHI awareness campaign to tackle the problem of speeding In the Newtown, Soberton Heath and Soberton areas. Would you like to do something positive This will cover the roads we know are most problematic but to preserve our peace and promote to be successful the team needs more volunteers (any age responsible driving through our villages? from 18 upwards) to join the current group of approximately 15 people. We are particularly keen to recruit volunteers from the Soberton area that Is under-represented so far. You can help!

Bishops Waltham Police have kindly offered us the For more information or to sign up piease temporary loan of equipment to get this started but In due email our local Community Speedwatch course we will need to fund raise around £^^^fc«iur co-ordinator John Haskins, with your name, own Community Speedwatch equlpmej address and telephone number,

Admission is €4. Tea and cake will also be available together with a plant stall. All proceeds go to the National Garden Scheme.

Old Droxford Station is the last complete station on the old Meon Valley line. The garden is a mix of perennials, annuals, wild flower and kitchen garden. Sir Winston Churchill was based at Old Droxford Station immediately before D Day in June 1944.

This is the last year that Old Droxford Station will be open under the scheme.

Meon Valley Garden Club

The clubs Spring show was held at the Meon Hall In April, It was a great success In most classes. Many exhibitors thought they would not have a daffodil to show, but as usually there were plenty. The class that did not do well was Rhubarb In fact there were no entries, something to do with not having a cold enough winter! The cookery judge was very complimentary about the entries; she particularly liked the cakes and was most Impressed with the men's section as they had to make Hot cross buns. Not a bad Job tasting all those sweet and savoury delights. As usual the children's classes were wonderful, so much young talent. The judge found It hard to choose winners In some classes.

Also In April we had our Coffee morning this year held at Old Droxford Station, so our thanks go to Jo and Tony Williams for hosting It. It was not particularly good weather but we all enjoyed refreshments, a wander around the garden and some retail therapy, mainly cakes and plants.

All the ingredients for a classic summer's afternoon were there - whether it was tea and delicious cake on the lawn listening to the Victory Brass Band and the Swanmore College Jazz Band or beer and a BBQ to the delightful strains of the hugely popular Soberton Strummers Ukulele Band. There was sporting celebrity in the shape of Derek Gamblin, known to most of us as the retired boss of Meon Valley Nurseries, who revealed in his fete-opening speech his proud record of 42 caps playing football for Portsmouth, and Great Britain. Flowers were in abundance, both in the charming grounds of Meonwood and on the stunning plant stall which attracted garden-lovers from miles around eager to snap up bargains. Like all the very best British occasions there was something for all interests, whether it was the line-up of vintage tractors and steam engine in the Scout Field, the classic and interesting cars collected on the Front Lawn, dogs being put their paces by The Victory Dog Training Club or the Pet Farm complete with piglets, lambs and hens. Donkey Rides and Thomas the Tank Engine for the young. I met one delighted woman leaving with an empty purse and a carload of fantastic bargains from the Nearly New Clothes stall. Two children spending their last pennies at the raffle stall proudly clutched cuddly toys won down in the Arena, where they had obviously had the time of their lives. And the "Sing and Tonic" Meon Valley Community Choir inspired many visitors to give their rusty vocal chords a work-out and can now expect an influx of new members. Meanwhile Newtown and Soberton Infant School charmed everyone with one of their best- ever country dancing displays. But most importantly, we had smiles - lots of them - people simply beaming with the pleasure of being there whether as visitors or stall-holders on what was just a perfect summer day. John Barfoot was still grinning late that evening despite having walked 22 kilometres around the site during the day (according to his Fitbit!) and Sue Wells was probably not far behind as she flew around supporting her team. Malcolm Padgett must also have covered a good few miles as he dashed from one highlight to another to deliver his entertaining commentary.

On a sadder note, there were some well-known faces missing from this year's fete: among them were Stan Turton and Chris Clark who both died during the past year. For many years Stan helped his wife. Holly, on the White Elephant stall and for the past four years or so master-minded the parking arrangements - and Hugh Pringle, who led the parking team this year, will testify as to how demanding and important a role it is to find safe parking for some 430 vehicles within walking distance of the fete.

Chris co-ordinated the Portsmouth & Southsea Mini Owners Club which regularly thrills enthusiasts with its display. It was good to see that Rosalind Golden, the new co-ordinator, made sure that Chris's Mini Cooper Sport made an appearance this year in his memory. We also desperately missed Abie Guy, a star among the younger helpers at the fete for the past 12 years, who is undergoing treatment for bone cancer at hospitals in London. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back in action at next year's fete. With around 150 people named on the official helpers list - and dozens more who just turned up on the day - it is impossible to acknowledge all the individual contributions to this fantastic event. They are all absolutely vital to the mix, to the variety and sheer scale of what is generally recognised as one of the best church fetes around and a brilliant start to the summer. MEON VALLEY CARERS GROUP NEWS Registered Charity No. 1107865 Promoting a positive way of living with dementia Telephone: 01489 895444 Email: meon-valley@btconnect We enjoyed a very happy time during March, April and May. The Easter Bonnet Meeting was great fun on 22 March with Sandra Simmonds, our speaker, entertaining everyone with the second talk of her series entitled' A Day in the Life of an Iranian Housewife'. There is still one more talk in the series for us to enjoy. Sandra judged the Easter Bonnets and a winner was announced. Each member had an Easter Egg and the tea and coffee was particularly special due to the hard work by our band of volunteers who took the meeting in my absence. May was again a busy month because apart from our Lunch and Group Meeting, we hosted the Bishops Waltham Film Night on 11 May at the Junior School. We went to Hill Place for the afternoon on 24 May 2016 which was very interesting as it was the first visit by the Group to this venue. We are very excited that by next month, our new website will be ready to go and details will be available.

Our activities each month include the Pub Lunch at the Forge, Shedfield, on the second Tuesday of each month, providing all carers with an opportunity to relax and socialise with others just like them. The Group Meeting is held at The Peterson Centre, Church Road, Swanmore on the fourth Tuesday each month. On a regular basis. Carers are able to mix with people in a similar situation, whilst their cared for are able to be with them, encouraged by volunteers to take part in stimulating activities such as art, games and musical events. We are so fortunate to have a student from the Winchester College of Art to provide activities that will interest the cared for, this month they worked with clay, which was very successful. We endeavour to compile a programme that will provide interesting speakers and also include two to three outings a year. The generosity of the Meon Valley Lions Club means that members who are unable to transport themselves, are collected by Minibus and brought to the meetings and taken safely home afterwards.

The volunteers attend the meetings and pub lunch and provide a warm welcome to any new comers. Please do come and see for yourself how this extremely friendly, relaxed group of people will lighten your worries and help you in any way they can.

The Programme for the Group from January 2016 - June 2016 is available and if, on reading about us regularly in your parish magazine, you realise this is just what you are looking for, please do contact us by ringing 01489 895444, the office is open throughout the year on Monday morning from 09.15-13.15 except on Bank Holidays.

MBE awarded to Anne Deane - October 16**^ at Windsor Castle by HM the Queen

I am sure that many of you remember Anne Dean who lived in Soberton for many years, in Beacon House with her husband Phiiip and their three children. She was very involved with so many things- the Red Cross, Brownies, Guides, Foot Clinic and very much more - including Viliage Outings! On a personal note, she was very kind and helpful to me when I moved into Soberton on my own with a young baby girl and a 2 year old daughter - about forty six years ago!. It was her idea that she and I and Rachel Copeman should start a summer holiday Play Week - still happening every summer- and also the 3Ps, with the then Vicar also on our team.(At that time we tried to have an event every month).

After Philip died, Anne moved down to Dorset to live near her daughter - and, typically Anne, got herself involved in many similar activities.

Last year her daughter wrote to me regarding Anne's activities in Soberton as she was putting her forward for an Honour - which of course i did, listing as many as I could remember -1 probably left some out. Subsequently, last October she was awarded an MBE at Windsor Castie by HM the Queen. Well done Anne! She said in her later letter to me that it was all a complete surprise to her that she was to receive this award - she had a wonderful day and all three of her children came and looked after her, etc. on the day.

I am sorry that I have taken so long to inform you all about Anne's Award - a case of events, events, etc.

Soberton Down Midsummer Soiree 5.30pm to 7pm on Friday, June 17**^

SoberNewts has been working hard over the past two winters to restore Soberton Down to its natural beauty. We think we are nearly there - and to celebrate we would like to > Invite you to join us for a celebration of this ten acre downland site ^ with its rich plant and butterfly life. Take a walk around the Down with one of our guides and get the inside track on the many different species which make it their home - including the orchids which we expect to see in June. Or simply come and enjoy the spectacular view and drink a glass of something refreshing with us! Soberton Down is open to everyone at all times under the "Right to Roam" provisions - provided dogs are kept on leads to prevent disturbance to nesting birds or cattle grazing in the winter months. Try and keep to the trodden paths to avoid trampling wild flowers.

How to get there: From the crossroads in front of Soberton Village Hall walk up Chalk Hill until you come to the finger post marking the Wayfarer's Walk - postcode is 8032 3PH. Follow the footpath past two white cottages until you come to a "kissing gate" on your left. This is a short but quite energetic climb. Go through the kissing gate and you are on the Down. A rough trodden path leads from the gate along the top of the Down, with another path descending diagonally back to the blackthorn fringe at the bottom of the Down after a few hundred yards.

Care is needed when walking on the Down, even when following the paths, due to the holes left by rabbits and badgers, and other trip hazards caused by brambles and the cut ends of bushes that have been removed.

Are you or a loved one due to go Into hospital? Do you know what happens regarding your discharge when admitted to hospital? Your Age Concern Hampshire Village Agents can help you to prepare for this by sharing information on hospital discharge procedures. For example:

Did You Know?

A patient should only be discharged when:

• They are medically fit • Care Plan services are ready to start • All equipment is in place and ready for use • A discharge assessment must have taken place, and a care package arranged if necessary, before discharge, otherwise discharge is unsafe. • No-one should be discharged in the middle of the night and staff should check you have transport home following discharge. • There should be a named person in charge of the patient's discharge (this may be a different person on different days) and the patient should be told who this is and how to contact them. • A patient must have the capacity to agree to an assessment(and treatment). If the patient lacks capacity, staff must consult the Power of Attorney or the Welfare Deputy appointed by the court.

These are just a few things to be aware of when considering discharge from hospital. There is a lot more information available and important to be aware of and your Village Agent can help you to access a full fact sheet and leaflet produced by Hampshire County Council on these procedures. David and Sylvie will happily chat to you if you have any concerns around this. Please call David and Sylvie on 07814 621364if you'd like to discuss this further, or if unavailable call Age Concern Hampshire on 0800 328 7154 or email [email protected].

Soberton Races part one Soberton, or more correctly, Hambledon Hunt Races, usually held in May, and initially on Soberton Great Down and are generally believed to date from the last decade of the 18th century. Certainly by 1814 they were advertised locally by the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle and nationally by 1823 in the Morning Post.

In these early days there seem to have been only two races but they were each run over three heats. In 1823 eleven horses took part in the first race, the Sweepstake, worth five guineas. The second race was the Farmer's Cup, usually run over two miles. There were seven starters, they had to be non-thoroughbreds and the property of farmers within the limits of the Hambledon Hunt. The races were run over the open Soberton Great Down and, according to hearsay, started a little to the north of Big Tree and via a track on to the Downs, out to Bushey Down and returning along Long Road. The day ended with a Supper and a Ball frequently held at the George Inn, Hambledon.

A newspaper report on the Races of 1826 notes that due to the fine weather a large company assembled "although we missed some of those gay and splendid equipages which on other occasions have graced the scene". However, it was not without drama. The day concluded with a pony race but one pony "dropped down dead at the end of the first heat," and an unfortunate accident within the crowd. The paper regrets "the very lamentable practice of recruiting parties appearing on race courses". The beating of a drum caused a horse in a gig to bolt throwing the occupants, two ladies and a gentleman, a considerable distance. They escaped with a few bruises.

In 1835 The Hambledon Hunt Races were attended by the Turkish Ambassador and were followed by a well-attended Ball at the King's Head, Mickham. In Dune the Portsmouth Garrison Races took place on Soberton Down instead of Portsdown Hill which caused some controversy in Portsmouth. The day was oppressively hot and there were several accidents including a Warnford man (or boy) being knocked down and trodden on by a horse.

Over the years the programme and rules of the race meeting evolved, more races were added but the Farmer's Cup remained, the rules for entry more or less the same. In 1845 the Officers of the Army & Navy are included on the card and a notice appeared in the local paper that 'applicants for Booths' were to be made to the Clerk of the Course and paid for before the day of the races Not only did the races attract most of the important families of the county and sometimes the 'aristocracy', no doubt in their own conveyances, from the 1850's advertisements appear in the local papers for an 'Omnibus' leaving the High Street in Portsmouth for a return fare of five shillings.

The 1859 Act for the Enclosure of Commons and Maste Grounds meant that 1860 was the last year the races were held on Soberton Down. A press release of 1861, stating that the race course was now ploughed up but the intention was 'that the races should continue when a suitable locality shall have been chosen'.

The next copy date is 18**^ July.

Moscow Drug Club Reviewed by Jonty Sherwill

The jazz group with the edgy name returned to Rookesbury Hall on 29th April (last time it was February 2013) and once again played to a packed audience. Led by Canadian singer Katya Gorrie, the line up for this performance was a bit different with Jonny Bruce now on trumpet and Andy (surname missed) on acoustic guitar alongside the other two regulars, bassist Andy Crowdy and Mirek Salmon playing his accordion.

Jonny Bruce, a classically trained freelance trumpeter was on top form and entertained with vibrant solos, a perfect contrast to some delicate and dextrous guitar solos. With numbers from the likes of Jacques Brel, Louis Armstrong, Tom Waits, Dinah Shore and Leonard Cohen the evening delivered a varied musical mix, including Katya's romantic rendition of Cohen's'Dance me to the End of Love', also enjoyed last time they appeared.

After a half time break for more wine and nibbles the second set was equally absorbing but perhaps we missed the singalong enjoyed last time! No matter, the group were not allowed to leave without an encore, and they chose their title song 'Moscow Drug Club' as the finale. Once again the Rookesbury Hall committee with compere Grant Cameron delivered an exceptional evening of entertainment, so keep an eye out for their next event. 0n6 Man. Two Guvnors - Review by Jonty Sherwill The Soberton Players' production of Richard Bean's One Man, Two Guvnors will have had many of us chuckling for days after seeing it and not just because of the excellent script. An English adaptation of Servant of Two Masters, a 1743 comedy play by the Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni, the play successfully replaces the Italian period setting of the original with Brighton in 1963.

After a musical introduction from skiffle band The Brighton Boys'(Roger Easey, Josh Harris & Jeff Hooper)the opening scene introduced the array of dubious characters who throughout the play deliver some spendidly cliched dialogue with a sharpness and pace that would suggest the whole cast had an affinity with the character they were playing.

In particular John Rowlinson's portrayal of the retired criminal Charlie 'The Duck' Clench was worryingly convincing, while Hugh Pringle, as corrupt lawyer Harry Dangle fell so happily into the role to suggest an alter ego that only retirement has allowed him to indulge. Completing the trio of old pros was Ewart Wood as the affable ex jail-bird Lloyd Jones.

Not for the first time Ben Bracken was cast in the lead role and for good reason. This time as the rather less than sharp Francis Henshall, and as usual his natural humour was matched by superb comic timing: the slapstick routine of beating himself up was a high spot in a consistently energetic performance.

Vying for 'best actor', Pete Berkelely as the self-absorbed Alan Dangle delivered a piece de resistance in ham acting while Sharon Millmore playing Pauline, his betrothed, excelled with all the gullibility intended for the part.

Some moments of comic genius shone through, and whether these were meant in homage to past joys or not it matters little, they worked! Chris van Schaick's Alfie, the stooped and decrepit novice waiter immediately conjured both Max Wall and Freddie Frinton in Dinner for One, a perfect contrast to the suave and sardonic yet kind hearted maTtre d' played brilliantly by Mike Flanagan.

Caroline Barfoot shone as ever in her role as Rachel Crabbe, although 'drag' hardly seems the right epithet for a woman playing a woman dressed as her brother, and Jeremy Miles as the loathsome Stanley Stubbers complete with black wig that had no relevance to the plot, but raised a half-horrifed, half-fascinated guffaw from the women (mostly) in the audience.

Such was the standard of performances that the somewhat strange inconsistency of the plot and script seemed of little consequence as the audience kept laughing at humour more graphic than might have emanated from Max Miller's blue book, and where in the opening scene a walk on part for Richard Attenborough's Pinky (Brighton Rock) might have fitted the script perfectly, in the second half an entrance by Brian Rix would have been even more believable! There was even some audience participation, and while one would think that having a jug of water poured over your head was beyond the call, the unflappable Alison Baseley retained her composure before being ushered away to be dried off!

While the play culiminated in a predictably romantic conclusion as Francis wins the effervescent and voluptuous Dolly played by Sharron Channing, in any production of such high standard any loss of pace is shown up and the only minor quibble might be the rather overlong restaurant serving routine, ludicrously amusing though it was.

As usual for Soberton plays the production, sets and costumes were superb (Susan Hyland, John Haskins, Zoe Philips and Paul Hayles) and with some clever visual surprises that included the crepe suzette that went off a bit too flambe, and at least one well cued sound effect from Rob Wheeler and Paul Clark at the lighting desk. Best of all was to see our much loved regulars in the cast delivering lines so utterly out of character that their seeming endorsement of the whole script rendered some blatantly vulgar gags inoffensive even to a family audience.

This thoroughly competent production masterminded by Director Katie Flanagan was a tour de force, and she should be proud of extracting polished performances from every member of the cast, including her daughter Millie whose walk on part was anything but that, requiring a perfectly timed cart wheel! Good Neighbours Group

Broken your arm - or injured your leg - and can't get about? Car on the blink and an urgent medical appointment to get to? No means of transport, but Southampton Hospital wants to see you?

It's time to call on Soberton and Newtown's Good Neighbours Group - your local, friendly team of volunteers who are available to help people, of any age, living in our community to get to medical appointments, lunch clubs and other essential services.

Every year we answer dozens of calls for assistance. We have 18 volunteers who use their own cars in exchange for a modest charge (see table below) to cover fuel, wear and tear etc.

The Good Neighbours Group has been part of village life for 25 years and, as part of the Good Neighbours Network umbrella group run by the local dioceses, is fully insured for public liability, personal accident and monetary loss.

How do I book? To request transport ring one of our Care Co-ordinators Phil Bergin on 02392 632551 or Sue Musselwhite on 01489 877282. These numbers are published on the back page of the parish magazine each issue.

If you need to call the emergency services, the following guidelines will help....

• Keep a record of your address and post code by your phone (it may not be you or a member of the household that makes the call); • Ensure your house name/number is clearly displayed by your front gate(many are difficult to spot!): • Switch on front internal and external lights at night to help us find you; • Ensure pets are secured safely out of the way; • Prepare to flag down the ambulance (use high-vis jackets and/or torches); • Compile a list of drugs patient is taking, when last taken and details of any allergies, medical conditions, etc; • Ensure path/driveway affords clear and easy access. It's BBQ season again!

Spring has sprung and the Meon Valley Lions have scrubbed up the BBQ kit for another season of FSA five-star rated, gastronomic excellence. We had three events lined up on consecutive weekends in April and the team's first major outing of the year, was the 16"^ Annual Charity Beer festival at Wickham. This year we attended on both the Friday and Saturday nights, although the Friday was a purely social affair, when several of us went along to enjoy the excellent beer, blues and curry evening. The hard work was reserved for the Saturday night, when we worked full-tilt from 6.30pm to 10pm, serving over 500 portions and raising around £900 for our charity account in the process. Thanks to Mike and the team for letting us support this great fund-raising event - we look forward to many more. Strangely, we never have any shortage of volunteers when the beer festival comes around!

Sadly, the following week's BBQ at the Canine Partners' Bluebell Walk was rained off. Although the day itself was fine, the ground at Holywell estate was completely waterlogged from two previous days of heavy rain, leaving the organisers little choice but to cancel the event on the Friday afternoon. In contrast, for the "By George" event in Swanmore, the weather turned out rather nice. Set in the beautiful St Barnabas Church and Paterson Centre in Swanmore, this was a community event celebrating St George's Day. Lions is an international organisation, dedicated to supporting local people and communities, so we were delighted to be invited to participate in this wonderful village event. Despite the fierce competition from Barnaby's coffee bar and the cake stall, we managed to sell out our BBQ stock by early afternoon, raising another £270 for our charity account. The whole day was topped off when Lion Ian Adams won a bottle of champagne in the "Guess the weight of the Henry vacuum cleaner" competition.

Could you be a Lion? Lions are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others and support good causes. We have 17,000 active members belonging to 900 local clubs throughout the British Isles and Ireland. Meon Valley Lions club has been going since the early 1970s and currently has 25 members. We are involved in raising funds, organising local events, providing direct support for individuals or groups in the community and responding pro- actively wherever and whenever we can. But we also make sure we have a bit of fun along the way, with a programme of fun social activities. If you'd like to put something back into your local community, why not come along to one of our events and find out a bit more? We're really quite a friendly bunch. Rookesburv Hall Library

Sadly following a consultation by Hampshire County Council, the decision has been made to end the mobile library service. The library van will make its last visit in June and will be very much missed in the village.

Although most of us can visit a library in Fareham or Waterlooville there are times when we have read our books and have nothing to read. So we have filled a bookcase with an excellent choice of books left over from the Jumble Sale in April for you to borrow. The bookcase is in the entrance hall and we have even provided a very comfortable armchair so you can make your choice in comfort. We will remove all of the books in October and replace them with a fresh selection from our next Jumble Sale. There is no charge or donation but please remember to return the books when you have read them.

The hall is open on Monday and Friday mornings between 9.30am and 12.30pm for the Post Office.

This small library will bring Rookesbury Hall back to its original roots when it was a Reading Room where newspapers and books were supplied although the location was at The Hawthorns in Church Road.

If you would like to read more about the history of Rookesbury Hall we have an excellent little booklet written by Ann Pendred which costs £2.50. Note the complete lack of surrounding buildings. Below - School Hill, postcard stamped 1906, showing the ivy-clad Porch House which has medieval origins and was formerly two cottages. The porch is an 18C addition. This view is virtually unchanged. Grateful thanks to Mrs M Wingham of Woodend who kindly provided the postcards to the Society.
